Finally, I’m so happy yall did a deep dive on Mariah. She’s been through so much. When she was a kid, a r*cist literally spat in her face. Her sister tried selling her for dr*gs and the Matolla drama was crazy. He hired body guards to follow her everywhere in the house. It was like the paparazzi for Britney, but in Mariah’s own home. And the Jlo tea goes deeper than just Mariah. Jlo happily stole records and used other people’s voices without their consent, specifically Ashanti. Can’t wait to finish this episode.

Imo, Mariah telling the media she doesn't know Jlo is her being kind in the long run. If it was any other celebrity, they would've ran their mouth on Jlo and airing out her dirty tactics behind the scenes. Mariah saved Jlo from that embarrassment and just didn't acknowledge her but people kept pressing it on. Mariah always knew that her talent was enough to catapult her back into the top of the charts and she did.

Luis Miguel and Mariah dated for YEARS and in her memoir Mariah states he told her she wasn’t black and told her to stop identifying as part black even though her dad is black. 9/11 saves her career somehow by directing attention away from glitter’s critical failure, Mariah’s mother placed her in a psychiatric facility and Mariah was only able to escape bc the security at the facility was too preoccupied with 9/11 on the news (in her memoir), and Mariah gets a second boost of public favor when she sings the national anthem at the Super Bowl post 9/11. The "I don't know her" comment was actually genuine. It happened in Germany in late 1999 when she was on a European promotional tour for Rainbow, her last release with the record company. A reporter was asking her what she thought of new acts, such as Destiny's Child (original lineup), and she was praising Beyoncé talent. Jennifer Lopez only released her 1st single "If U had My Love" in the summer off 1999. While Mariah may have heard the rumours about Tommy signing JLO, it's quite possible she may had not yet heard or seen enough of Jlo's video to pass comment. It was two years later in 2001 when all the Loverboy drama erupted when Mariah was releasing it and Jlo's 2nd album was already released.

I wouldn’t say that there weren’t people that cared about that back then because of course there were but this was/is a problem throughout the industry that most people who could actually do anything just ignore. Brandy dated Wanya (Boyz II Men) when she was underage and he’s 5 years older than her, although the relationship has been disputed. Aaliyah married R. Kelly (27 at the time) at the age of 15 by lying about her age on the marriage certificate so she didn’t need to have her parent’s permission. It’s always been a problem that these young girls are “taken under someone’s wing” early in their careers because they are manipulated into believing it will help their success. Very unfortunate, at least it’s not as easy to hide this behavior anymore with the way every move a celebrity makes is accessible online thru social media but that’s not to say that it doesn’t still happen :/

I'm not versed in everything pop culture so I might be wrong here but JLO's recent "downfall" or whatever is interesting because I feel like people don't empathize much with her because she seems like she was an industry plant and a not-so-nice person, whereas a lot of other popstars are seen in a much different light today, like Mariah, Britney, Jojo, etc. because the true stories of their lives came out (imprisoned in a toxic relationship, conservatorship, label issues, etc.).

Mariah is resiliant asf - her drive, passion and stubborness (to not back down) is commended. Her sass, bluntness and shade is hiliarious! JLo shouldn't even be mentioned along the side of Mariah, that's straight disrespectful. It's also comical that they tried to use JLo to compete with her.

I hope you could do a deep dive on Tyra Banks because i remember watching ANTM when I was younger but when people on twitter started uploading old clips, I realized how toxic it was and the public opinion on Tyra also shifted greatly.

I never liked jlo because she is very rude to her fans and colleagues. But I never knew this about Mariah carey. I learned a lot, you guys made a very good deep dive!

Thank you for this! I’ve been a fan since l was a little girl. After she slipped out of her Handcuffs, I remember waiting with bated breath for Butterfly to be released. Honey is still my favorite video. She nailed that song.

Imagine being 19 years old and marrying someone the age of your dad and also your boss, the umbalance is unreal! When you are older you realize how wrong those older "men" are!

N guess what Mariah came to be one of the biggest artists, while lots of people still don't even know JLO was ever a thing 😂 love that for Mariah!

I honestly feel so bad for J LO after seeing this video.. like she really got put up against one of the best singers in history as a way of revenge.. and has had to take the brunt of all the snide comments. It’s sad

44:35 I don’t think “grandiose” is a fair term here. Mariah isn’t pretentious and nothing about her as a singer is excessive in *that* way. But she is definitely major, an icon, a legend and one of the BEST to ever do what she does.

I’m not even a Mariah fan and I’ve never been, but this is well done and so interesting! Although we could have done with much less focus on J Lo. Another celebrity of whom I’m not a fan but I am very curious to watch a similar documentary on is Wendy Williams!!! I really wanna know what went down with her
