i think we’re at the point where we call everything that’s cheaper a “dupe” like someone puts out a lip oil and y’all say it’s a dupe of dior when it’s just a popular formula at the moment. we need to go back and reflect on what a dupe really is vs a popular formula

It honestly becomes annoying that every brand wants to make the popular products making it the Inly thing you see in stores until something new comes out and the cycle repeats. I’d rather see different brands have different products than 100+ lip oils

At this point, it’s not even like I’m buying make up every week but I seem to run out of certain make up items at the same time and replacing a handful of items from the drugstore is at least $50. And I want to try something new I have to seriously debate spending $10 on a blush.

Agreed, everything is more expensive now! And especially for non essential items like cosmetics... If people are willing to pay $22 for a foundation, why wouldn't CoverGirl charge $22 for it? Honestly, this is something I love about Rare, REM, and About-Face. They seem to be riding the line between drugstore and prestige, almost always in price point and only occasionally in quality, as most of it is actually pretty nice. It feels like the right middle ground while drugstore is inconsistent in quality and has such a wide variance in price between brands, and the prestige brands are also trying to get away with charging even more.

I actually think KZbinrs had a role to play here. If KZbinrs were constantly hyping up drugstore products, saying that they are fantastic quality and near dupes of high end products, then drugstore companies would have been like “ok we have an excellent product here, let’s raise those prices”. Not saying KZbinrs did anything wrong, just that it’s a natural outcome of the situation

They also make such a big deal out of high-end and perpetuate the idea that it's all that people really want and that 'drugstore' is some consolation product for 'the poors'.There are a lot of people that don't give a shit about 'prestige' and wouldn't think of anything being a 'dupe' because makeup isn't an obsession or hobby to them beyond simple enjoyment or necessity. What I'd like to see is an end to comparisons altogether and just reviews on a product's merits.

As a European, I find it crazy that drugstore makeup is so overpriced in the US, because the really affordable makeup you can find with really good quality is not more than 7 Euros. And that is Catrice, their most expensive products are around 7 - 8 Euros, and we all know that their quality is really good. Or Essence, their products are not more than 5 Euros. I know that everything is expensive nowadays, but the increase in price with makeup in the US is next level. Also I find it interesting that the Soft Glam Filter from Catrice is 10 USD, whereas in Europe its 8 Euros.

Catrice took a perfect approach, too. They duped the popular dupe, reduced price, AND fixed the major issue with e.l.f., how orangey and dark it is on a lot of people. I feel like some drugstore brands like Milani, Pixi, Neutrogena, etc are no longer really even drug store level. A lot of Milani's products will appear to be cheaper (cream bronzer, setting sprays) but will actually be a super similar price to high end brands when you compare the price per ounce. They just appear cheaper because a lot of their products you're just getting LESS of. Drug store brands like essence, elf, and wet and wild still have that affordable price range I imagine when I think drugstore. Elf of course has products that are more expensive, but they've also continued to make their 1,2, and $3 items that are quality.

I was always baffled by Americans calling Milani cheap and even Neutrogena. I remember back in 2018/2019 finally finding a Milani gloss that duped the one from Fenty Beauty in my country and I was so disappointed lol. Fenty gloss costed the equivalent of around 19$ then and the Milani gloss costed almost **drum roll** 17$ (it was 8$ in America tho). Same with many American brands except Maybelline - Nyx and Revlon are pretty boujee or there are many American brands that don't exist where I live (Elf was discontinued in 2021 here iirc) but then again, we have Euro brands like Rimmel London, essence and Catrice that are pretty good and affordable too.

Spot on. I will just add in Ulta if you are in the US. I shop their sales and use their coupons strategically especially for the “drugstore” half of the store to get reward points so I can make informed purchases from the “prestige” side. Companies know this as they mine data from the rewards of card programs they have (think CVS or Walgreens and their recent makeovers of the beauty sections). They have to compete harder with discounts for our business.

I think a really interesting video idea is one about beauty subscription boxes (birchbox, ipsy, etc.). I haven't heard of any recently but I think it'd be interesting to know more about the business model, how/why they were successful at one point, and if they ever may make a comeback (esp with inflation and how good of a value some were). Also I'd really love to hear your thoughts on asian/k-beauty brands. I believe it's a little harder to find cruelty-free asian beauty brands but I'm so intrigued by them. Sorry this is so long LOL but I'd also love to hear your opinion on the tarte brand trips and all the controversy on it. I think a video on makeup marketing in general would be fun, as you've mentioned the difference in "how" we shop and elf's superbowl commercial, but I know there's been huge shifts in how brands advertise (ex: magazines to influencers), how we learn to apply makeup (learning from older family and makeup counters to learning from youtube) etc.

Drugstore prices have gotten crazy, in part, because their product quality is indeed going up -- there used to be a lot more misses -- so they are more genuinely competing with the higher end AND people will pay those prices (a la virality and dupes). Drugstore makeup, like drugstore haircare, hasn't always had the best reputation, but they have earned the trust of their customers that their products are at least comparable and merit a higher price tag. Would be interested to see if this trend allows space for another wave of $1 makeup brands in response to the rising prices.

While it’s nice to have some more affordable dupes, it seems to have taken the place of actual new product innovation and development. I think the market is primed for a small, almost “indie” type brand to come in at a lower price point and some original products.

Yeah I think what brands we consider drug store need to be re-evaluated. So many traditional “drugstore” brands now have similar pricing to midrange. There are truly very few drugstore brands left & it really sucks. It’s harder to get affordable makeup

I have the nyx lip clicks and I like them bc if you add a few coats it becomes more opaque. It doesn’t have the longest wear time, you might need to reapply, but if you’re looking for something buildable, comfortable, and a slippy I think they’re great!

I have oily skin and that covergirl foundation is surprisingly good on me, its become my quick/everyday foundation. The shades are very light, so be aware of that before purchasing. Also I second the comment on using coupons for drugstore makeup. CVS always has coupons for different brands available.

Hi Kelly, definitely looking forward to the comparison video of the click up lip balms! I like the Tarte Maracuja but have only bought them on a deep sale (21 Days of Beauty level) because I just can’t bring myself to spend that much on a lip product let alone a lip balm. If I can drop it out of my purse or pocket and lose it in my car (has happened to me more frequently than I want to admit) it better not be super expensive to replace. I recently bought the NYX one (I think in the same shade you showed) and it is slightly different from the Tarte but not in a bad way so I’m leaning in that direction except I like the Tarte shade offerings better. Can’t wait to see what you think. ❤

I agree with you about Catrice not being the best primer if you expect a glow from within thanks to it. I’ve tried it with 3 foundations one with natural finnish, dewy and semi-matt finnish and they looked the same. It’s amazing primer for hydration in dry-ish climate on dry skin and beautiful glow from within highlighter. The most difference I’ve noticed if you want glow from within with foundation is to mix 2/3 Catrice and 1/3 foundation but don’t expect much coverage (I used medium to full coverage foundation and it provided light coverage when I mixed it this way. Which is kind of expected. But hey it worked.) Thanks for the video❤

Good Morning Kelly. My everyday morning work look mostly is just Foundation blush lipstick stained gloss whatever and a little bit of foundation or concealer on my eye lids with maybe a light colored shadows or bronzer shade. Some days of my eyes can handle it I will do mascara if not I just do the the face and out the door I go. There are days I get more compliments just doing that and if I have a full-fledged I look included. Not that I don't get compliments when I do wear eye shadows. LOL!! For a long time that was my go-to just plain old face products. Due to my sensitive eyes that at times get ultrasensitive and I can't even put mascara on them.

Your absolutely right! I'm predicting a new brand will hit the stores that's $5 and under soon! This is why I've pretty much just been shopping the dollar stores, only a couple things I need from actually drugstores, other than that I've been getting my fix at, dollar tree, family dollar, dollar general, their still truly affordable, definitely $10 & under, usually $5 and under! The dupes are fun but the couple dupes I do want to try I'm only going to get 1 of each and the mini sizes.... I'm actually thinking lately of budging and going into Ulta for essence, color pop, l.a. girl, I'm thinking rather than Walmart, this may end up being the more affordable route now.....

Why do people buy "drugstore" products at Ulta, which I assume is where some of these prices are from. Target sells the new Covergirl Essence for $16. Everything is so much cheaper there. Everyone complains about prices and then buys things from the most expensive store they can.🙄 Stop already.

I have to say, the cover girl foundation looks and feels really great! I have it and it looks totally natural in daylight and it makes my skin feel soft. I don’t love it on my nose. It does not seem to last on that one area of my face, so I use a bit of a different foundation for my nose. I actually didn’t know that it was a primer, so I’m going to try it as that. It has really good skincare ingredients and even though it’s $22, I do think the quality is there.

Theres alot of newness thats happening at drug store. That costs money 💰. That’s why the prices have gone up on these new dupe products, they can charge more because it’s technology that’s rivaling the prestige brands, but still firmly in the mid-point price-wise. It also doesnt help that the prices of everything has gone up. I was shook last week buying cotton balls because they were almost 5 dollars 😅 they used to be like 2 bucks at most.

R.E.M.s packaging and even shades remind me of Aveda makeup packaging from the late 90’s. Except they had real metal containers that were refillable. There was a band called Everything but the Girl and on one of their album covers the girl was using the Aveda metal. Then it started to sell like hotcakes. I recall because my mom worked at an Aveda factory at the time…
