I've been playing for a week and learning technique mostly from your channel. I've been changing bow direction with every finger change. No wonder it's sounded rubbish. Everything makes sense now. Thank you!

I'm working on an exam piece at the moment.... 2/4 time. The first 2 bars of the first two lines is a C crotchet then up bow slur of B flat, A, G, F in semiquavers and I'm struggling... It also needs to be played forte. One thing that seems to be helping a bit with my Left hand is ensuring my left elbow hasn't dropped... I'm finding I struggle far more with left hand co-ordination when my left elbow is too low....? Maintaining the Forte volume, keeping the bowing legato, not shortening the crotchet and emphasising the correct notes to reflect the beat is currently escaping me. Frustratingly I have a concept of what I need to be doing individually but getting it all together is tough.....

Unrelated but could you give some advice on when to change strings? Many thanks 🙂

Thanks again Jonathan, useful info. However, my huge problem is slurs with string crossings. I have established that the bow is straight and speed is consistent, but after many hours of trying, I still squeak on the string crossing. Help!

Squeak or crunch? Take a selfie video of your playing, and report back to me when you know it the bow is losing alignment or if the fingers are not coordinating with the movements of the bow.

@@CelloCoach Thank you ... and yes to all the above. I usually sight read music and occasionally check my finger placement and bow. The video didn't really show any problems, so today I sat in front of a mirror and did some simple scales. Voila! There is a squeak slurring from string to (fingered) string. It is so tiny I at first didn't realise my finger placement is not as accurate as I had thought, and I am always touching the string above. Mostly on the A or B down to G, and I now have to place my 4th finger prior to starting the slur. This sounds easy, but I am still having problems with my stretch. Also I discovered that my bowing isn't as perfect as I had thought, but only strays on the A string. Practise practise practise !!! And yes, I've watched your tutorials on Left Hand Tips.
