Something else to consider about footwork - for the exchanges that went well for me, I successfully kept the angle of my hips towards you and open enough to strike confidently. When I lunged too far or did an overly eager passing step, I pushed the angle of my hips away from the direction of the exchange, breaking my structure and leaving me open to your bladework. And when I passed back to thrust, I was able to land a good one because I was set in a stable position before initiating one - which I could NOT do from an over extended lunge.
