Hendrix played right-handed guitars upside down because he was used to having the pots above the strings. Even stronger, if you look up footage of him playing the Isle of Wight festival, using his custom ordered Flying V, which was one of only two genuine left-handed guitars he owned, you'll see him reaching at the wrong end of the guitar a couple of times to adjust the volume of his guitar. You can see him go, "Oh yeah, they're on the other side of this one.”

The story that I read but I can't remember where was that the paint job Hendrix put on was flaking off every time it was played so it eventually looked like crap.
@supafrogg2582 жыл бұрын
@mikegraphone2736 Thank you for that detail. That shed some light on the situation that may have prompted Mick Cox's action. Road wear during Cream performances had also taken it's toll on the custom artwork of Eric Clapton's '64 Gibson SG Standard, psychedelic-painted by the Dutch Artist team, "The Fool". The back of the SG's neck around the first position had worn down to bare mahogany, and that wood exposed to palm perspiration had deteriorated structurally. Patches of the custom paint work had also flaked off the front of the SG's headstock.

Even worse: having Jimmy Page lend you his Dragon Tele and deciding, “I’ll make it better” by painting over the whole body in thick brown paint! It not only destroyed the artwork, but the heavy goopy paint killed the tone of the guitar according to Page. It took him DECADES to figure out how to strip that brown mess off and restore the Dragon art!

I would assume/guess “prototype” guitars are the factory attempts to get it as close as they can to the artist’s original (or original idea for something like the SGV), and the Artist proof guitars are the factory and the artist going back and forth to do final tweaks to make it something they like. Usually serial #1 (or even #0) is the final ready for the market model for the artist, unless they have it in the contract that they want more than one of those.

Fender currently is producing them again in the Squire range. It would also be great to see you review a Squire Classic Vibe Starcaster. Man I really love Hendrix's artwork! Ive always thought that his Flying V and his red and white Fender Strat with this style of psychedelic artwork both looked amazing! Eric Clapton's "The Fool" Gibson SG is another I've always loved In that category. Even if Hendrix wasn't quite at that Immortal level of fame as he became later after he was gone, It still blows my mind that the guy he gifted the Flying V to had it refinished. I know it was his to do what he pleased with, but man it looked amazing! Also i know Trogly briefly touched on it but I wonder how they ended up officially 100% authenticating it? I imagine it's not easy through so many years through old photos and records or serial numbers. Be interested to hear the full story on that! Jimi really had an eye for cool guitars! Or maybe HE was so cool it made everything he touched cooler by association Lol

Fun facts: love drops was originally sunburst, it was painted with nail polish and felt tip markers, the saddles were plastic for whatever reason, this is potentially the guitar little miss lovers acetate demo was played on around or on the same day and in the same studio that the stars that play with laughing sams dice was recorded.

Also the sg was used often. Just not documented well. Specifically during the early winter 69 tour which was filmed for the most part and culminated in the royal albert hall shows he played. Filmed all in some sort of reality show like format but edited severely and now only snippets can be found among the 2/24/69 footage of RAH. Notably his Stockholm 69 show where he plays sunshine of your love and red house as well. There’s also when he appeared on the dick cavett show with said guitar. Also he was due to receive an all rosewood Stratocaster but unfortunately passed away

@The SNES Man it was commissioned in 69 but not scheduled for delivery until 70 for some reason from what I heard. Him being on tour all the time probably impacted it but I doubt that. So we know the art won't be 100% accurate but some details look like they where made to look slightly "better" than the original done by Hendrix. There's more artsy touches on things like the red painted lips for example. Jimi's has a fairly crude complete white outline drawn around his while the remake has a very psychedelic outline that incorporates dots and tapering paint stroke sizes. I'm assuming they wanted to amp up the art quality to justify the price.

I'm kinda starting to hate these "reissue" guitars by Gibson, at least with trems... I mean if Hendrix had a Vega Trem available, he would have worked that sh!t into the body and made it work, period. Spending so much money on something that's "inferior"... I feel that the original artists are rolling in their graves, since they would have wanted the newer tech, it just makes me say "meh". I'm pretty sure if you asked them what they hated about their guitars, they would answer, tuning or changing them out in the middle of a song or each song.

Jimi’s use of the “Flying V”was most likely inspired by Albert king whom he took artistic inspiration from. Also if people want to recreate Gibsons then sell them off is it any different from Gibson doing it (yes it’s copyright and illegal) because as far as I can tell the Gibsons of the 50’s and 60’s have never been recreated and because of manufacturing changes you cannot go back and so is this why we have the custom shop, which again still does not replicate the older time guitars because the art of woodworking and knowledge of hand to wood has been lost in the age of convenience and making big dollars. After so much ground work had been laid down in those earlier times by what I’d call “ true craftsman” Gibson has just found a way of doing everything more economically but without the character of a hand put to wood, built guitar. You cannot replicate that and they know it. Cool paint jobs are great but does it not take much more than that to make a truly inspired instrument and is this not what we should be aiming for. My point is also that a truly great instrument has beauty, has character, has precision, great sound and is built with love. This is not to say Gibson workers and Gibson as whole don’t feel that when making them but they surely are limited in what influence they have because the guitars change hands so frequently during the process. The Gibsons of old will never return and they weren’t all perfect and somethings have improved in terms of tooling standards however if you look at what great artists play and make great music from, well I’m pretty certain that those guitars would be far from perfect and unblemished. 😮 Great episode mate.
