Henry clearly caught the attention of Lady Mary from the moment they laid eyes on each other at Brancaster Castle. After their dinner in London, Mary tells Henry that she hates cars because she blames them for Matthew’s death. However, while sheltering from the rain, but Henry confesses that he is falling in love with her and the pair finally share a kiss.
From Series 6 Episode 6: The Board of Downton Cottage Hospital decides to approve its merger with the Royal Yorkshire Hospital and invites Cora to be its new president, replacing Lady Violet. Mary takes Tom with her to London to dine with Henry Talbot again. Henry confesses he is falling in love with Mary while they shelter from the rain. Carson questions Thomas about his private meetings with Andy, causing him deep upset and distress, reducing him to tears.

They made an excellent choice in casting Matthew Goode to play Henry. Yes, Mary and Matthew were a wonderful couple and had a great romance story. I bawled my eyes out when he died. But Matthew Goode is such a talented and handsome actor. If anyone can convince us that Mary can find another soulmate it another man, it’s Matthew Goode.

First, Matthew Goode is amazing actor and he could have created chemistry with anyone. Second, as a character, Henry is the only one who is not affected by Mary's social status. He simply loves her and wants to spend his life with her. At the end, he is the one strong enough to be with Mary, to live as a husband of much richer wife and to raise her son, again, the future Lord, as his own. What Violet and Tom said to Mary and what Mary realized at the end is that he indeed was her equal and that made him the perfect one. He isn't the dreamiest of them all, but he certainly possesses great qualities that made him the perfect choice.

The way she says it always seems so snide and done in bad-faith. Like she's rubbing it in to the other people that her husband made it through the war. @@panda5122 I didn’t get that at all. Mary isn’t bragging. Why would she? She lost her husband more recently, more senselessly, and after a very short time with him. When the woman calls them war widows, she’s lumping Mary’s tragedy in with theirs. There’s a sense of saying that that’s what happens in a war, all the young men die and women are left single. Mary sees this as a minor slight, since this paints the recent war as the reason for all of their misfortunes, which is dismissive of the actual manner and random tragedy of Matthew’s death. It also kind of implies that the woman doesn’t remember how Matthew died, which is insensitive because someone of their social circle should’ve known and been more sensitive to Mary’s feelings on the matter. Mary’s reply is made to point out that Matthew didn’t die in a war and his death wasn’t a part of it, her tragedy is separate and can’t be categorized as one of many shitty things about the war. It also points out that painting Matthew as another war casualty when he died in an entirely different manner is insensitive.

The thing is, Matthew helped bring out the best in Mary. She learned so much about herself, what she wants, and who she could be from their times together (since their very first meeting). They were a spectacular match and no one could really beat that, but Henry is a good match too. Henry was fun and interesting for Mary, something that was missing from a lot of her other suitors. She could relax, there was no real pressure with him, which she definitely needed, deserved, and wanted after all she had been through. She didn't need someone high and mighty in society any more. She was established and had solidified her position at Downton and could clearly hold her own, but she respected that Henry could hold his own too and had his own ambitions. I could go one about this, but I think I've already typed too much. :P

I love Henry Talbot and his romance with Mary is kinda cute but I feel it would have had a better impact on the audience if Mary hadn't been surrounded by men courting her all throughout season 5 and the start of season 6. As is customary, this entire sequence was accomplished with scrupulous attention to aesthetic. From the sumptuous elegance of the restaurant, to that hint of London fog in the air as Henry and Mary walk. The nicely achieved rain and the quick cuts that got them...finally and with appropriate giggling...to their brief, wonderful isolation. It seems almost vulgar to mention that carefully captured, intimate sound at the end of their kiss. (Well done to the sound recordist; and to John Lunn and the musicians for those beautifully composed and executed strings.) Matthew Goode's work in "The Imitation Game" was superb. I see young British actors like him, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Colin Firth as this generation's answer to Errol Flynn, David Niven, and Cary Grant. Matthew certainly deserves consideration as the next James Bond...but so does Tom Hardy. His portrayal of MI-6 operative Rikki Tarr in "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" (2011) might be the best James Bond audition anyone could ask for.

I think Henry was too much like Mary in that they were both hot-headed. We didn’t see much of their marriage, but I can easily imagine the two of them being one nasty argument away from a divorce... Matthew, on the other hand, brought out the best in Mary. He was kind, warm & thoughtful, and he made Mary less cold and mean too. They were a perfect match because they understood each other. Matthew didn’t always try to appease her, they just worked well together. Whereas Henry seems like he is always butting heads with Mary.

i wish i could rewatch this show like the first time: it really was an experience and i was completely immersed in that time. And I liked how the movie kept the tone of the series: it just felt like a long episode🤣

I am rewatching it and I still can't believe how they write off Mathew character. I know it was about his ending contract of 3 first seasons. But still was such big pity up to date. And then I don't find any one that bring exciting and dearing relationship as Mathew and Mary. I know they're all great.

She should have ended with Charles Blake. After Matthew, he was the best of her suitors and they had amazing chemistry.

Although I loved Matthew Goode, Mary didn't have the same chemistry with him as Matthew. Dan Stevens and Michelle Dockery had VERY hot chemistry! They almost seemed like bf and GF in real life, but Dan got married young at like 23 to a 30 year old woman. He was already married with child when Downton Started in 2010!

I loved what they were trying to do with Henry as a character who could see beyond Mary's money and status and challenge her on a personal level. My issue was that I just didn't believe it based on what was presented on screen. I didn't feel the same believable level of development from dislike to love the way we did with Matthew or even Charles. I am not a "Matthew or nobody" person, and I would have enjoyed seeing Mary with Charles. Henry is charming and fun but I didn't see the chemistry. Plus I felt uncomfortable watching every single character steamroll Mary's constant protests rather than believing her when she said she wasn't interested. Regardless of how the romance turned out, Tom should have respected Mary's boundaries in the beginning.

Although Mary had greater chemistry with Charles, it was a good idea to link her with Henry at the end. It’s because he didn’t really stir emotions and the idea was to keep Matthew-Mary’s love as the highlight. Good to show that Mary moved on but even better not to replace her first love story with another one. I guess the sense of emptiness and gloom that descended on DA after the death of Sybil and Matthew made the show all the more real and vulnerable. Thankfully they didn’t get other actors to play them. It really became a different DA before Matthews death and DA part 2 post his death.

i really shipped mary and charles blake at one point (especially cuz im a sucker for the enemies to lover/rivals to lovers trope) but their relationship/spark kind of fizzled out towards the end. then charles simply used her to get tony g and mabel lane fox back together. to this day idk why he did that if he wasn't really planning to win mary back (or maybe he thought he wouldn't let tony have his chance w mary if he couldn't have his, god knows). but once henry entered the scene i soon found myself loving him and tbh he's perfect for mary. they're both well matched wrt wit, personality and their feelings for each other

Mary really deserved to be alone for the rest of her life and grow into a spinster/old maid. Henry Talbot was way too good for her. Any man was too good for Mary (even though she thought it was the other way around).

Le Visionarium I am in agreement. I guess we're in the minority! I'm just starting season 5. I can't understand what all of these men see in her. She's cold and strings men along because she can't make up her mind. I guess maybe they see her as a challenge. They all try desperately to pull some emotion out of her. I loved Matthew. Actually, I like all of the men who show interest in her. She aggravates me with her indecision to the point where I hope they all give up on her and, yes, she ends up a spinster.

I'm not sure there is anything about Downton Abbey that I really dislike (orher than where some of the story arcs go). Love the set designs, costumes, scenic castle setting and most of all the casting (regular, recurring and guest stars) and all the characters (all those lovely accents and wicked insults/snarky comebacks). So looking forward to the next (last?) movie.

great series, great directing and acting... period costuming is exquisite, and i admire the leading actress range, saw her in a western series and was impressed... there is no way however, no matter how perfect the period details are, to capture the bodies of the time, if you ever watch actual films from the 30's , no woman had a perfect fit body like that, they were heavier usually, and even if skinny, never that fit.. i know it is necessary as part of being a leading actress these days, but as someone who has watched a lot of period movies, jean harlow, carole lombard, it is hard not to note it

This series im watching for the second tym and i can only say i can watch this agn n agn! I just cant get over Matthew and i guess he was just the best match for Mary. But i cant disagree that Henry was actually good for her unlike other men like Tony, Charles and evn Richard Carlisle. Evn tho Matthew looked dreamy n charming, Henry is tall n he has this aura, so in d end she found a good man dats what matters.
