Weight distribution and body part ratios in kids are completely different in comparison to adults. Their relatively heavy head works as a counter weight and allows them to squat very deep with a straight torso. If you observe closely, you will see, that their shin angle is comparable to that of an adult doing a goblet squat. Yes, many people are too stiff, but kids have an advantage when it comes to deep squatting.
@chrisk96135 күн бұрын
Good point! The proportions and weight distribution are very different. We’re comparing apples to oranges here.

Yes, we sit too much, but one thing that bugs me about comparing adults to children is that the proportions are not even close! A child has a much easier time squatting because of their proportions, so it's not JUST sitting. It's growing into other proportions as well.

I HATE hearing you youtube people calling squatting the “primal squat” or “ancestral squat” cause ITS JUST A SQUAT!! Outside the world of weightlifting this is the only thing people mean when they think of squatting!
@ShawnFumo4 күн бұрын
While the naming is a bit silly, I still think in the US at least when most people say “squat” they mean onto the balls of their feet. I never even considered trying to squat down while also keeping my heels down until learning more about it. I literally thought the only choices were to squat down a little bit and hold myself up with my leg muscles or go all the way down and feel unstable on the balls of my feet.

@malindarayallen6 күн бұрын
That's a hard one to guess. Everyone's a little different in their ability to improve flexibility. It also depends on what you do with the rest of your day. Just lean into the process and do regular checks with photos once a week. You'll start to get a sense of how fast you progress. Good luck on your journey! 😊

And you also can do weighted squats with heel lifts or a slant board. Obviously drop the weight to a lot less than usual. But that will help with the quad flexibility and strength in the lengthened position. Can also do seated good morning type movements with your feet a bit forward to give stability, to stretch your hips. And when you are in the actual bodyweight squat position, can experiment moving and bending around in various ways to loosen stuff up even more.

I have never seen anybody explain properly why raising heels leads to a deeper squat in satisfactory way, including you. Why can nobody seem to convey it in a logical manner?
@ShawnFumo4 күн бұрын
So, it is about balance. Your ankles being able to bend more and your hips being loose enough to let your abdomen get closer to your knees both shift your weight forward. If you don’t have the flexibility, you’ll feel like you’re falling backward unless you compensate in some way. Ways to compensate are: being on the balls of your feet, really bending your back and head forward, sticking out your arms in front of you (or hold a weight in front). You even can stand up slightly, but your legs will get tired. Just experiment a bit and will see how your balance is affected by all the different adjustments. If you can get enough ankle and hip flexibility, it allows you to be fairly relaxed and stable as you do it.

You may want to check the book Knee Ability Zero. Lots of stuff there to help knee health. The most basic place to start is to try walking backwards. It sounds strange but it works diff muscles from regular walking, similar to going down stairs but much less strenuous. Can try ATG split squats that have the front foot very high, which lets you move through a range of motion without much weight etc.
