Mine would be Genghis Khan 2 since it's the first one I tried to play by myself. A friend who gave me the CD played the first map with me. I tried the second one by myself for weeks and couldn't play through it no matter which unit I opted to "mass". It was so hard but so exciting for me. I would often play random map against a.i. with my friend when he would come over, but he wasn't that interested in the campaigns.

it is most nostalgic indeed. but sadly looking back at it now Genghis khan missions are very straight linear and boring compared to later dlcs. also devs never allow us play as Khan himself. tbh campaign of 6 missions is really not enough for Mongol empire tbh.

Gotta agree, Moctezuma was really nostalgic. Either the jungle bits, or the part where you capture Tenochtitlan. Joan of Arc, mostly. I remember when she had that brown cloak at the start, looking like the Scythes in Attila campaign. Barbarossa too, the first mission, where we probably all made a bazillion badass teutonic knights. The Cid too, Saladin. The OG ones for real. Does anyone remember the REAL nostalgia : the 2 icons on the desktop : helmet with red mohawk for Age of Kings, the spanish helmet with blue feather for Age of Conquerors. The cnematic where they play chess and it morphs into an epic battle ? Doing post imp games + aegis to spam Elite War Elephants. Killing ships with trebuchets cause making navy was for noobs.

There was a yellow champion in the left corner! The purpose was to keep the William Wallace player alive. And similarly, in the fourth Attila the Hun scenario, there is a blue samurai (of all things!) in the top corner to keep the roman army alive, which you can kill if you treb cut or chop through, but I don't remember whether it helps your chances because defeating the roman army might have had a trigger regarding the number of remaining units that only comes into play once the army has spawned. Blocking the spawning points of the army, though, did help a lot.

Those campaigns were most of the reason why the Huns and Mongols were my favorite civs, even though I couldn't micro cav archers worth a damn, lol. Also gotta say, I loved the Moctezuma mission where you have to convert enemy vills to make a base and then tear down the Tlaxcala wonder. As far as I'm aware you always could advance to the imperial age back in the day, we simply didn't care much about it. Through the campaign you progressively unlock the ages as you complete missions, teaching new stuff and such (like the 6th mission tasking you to gather relics), this last mission is the climax of the tutorial and is the only one that allows you to get to the last age. It would be a poor tutorial if they never teach you about imp tho.

I play mostly campaigns and I play totally original (no grid, no small trees) - infact I even have the mod that puts the OG AOK sounds back in over the new ones. But the most nostalgic actual mission for me? If not "Help, crusaders are attacking out trade routes!" for me it's Aztec 1 putting the relics in each temple, maybe for me because I got AOC and AOK as part of a pack. And yeah I used to finish the walls I'm sure the mission even tells you to do even though there's no real point to doing it. I'd do that then get the castle at the top of the river crossing to wipe out all English. My rule of thumb was also never add a second TC unless pop limit was at least 125. Which was a shame as most pop limit back then was 75 which is insane! considering the size of the maps compared to aoe1. (aoe1 all the pop cap was 50 so I guess they assumed a 50% increase was good enough?) Also this campaign is basically the only time I ever play Celts (despite being from a Celtic country and having ancestors here for 200+ years) - because the Celt civ basically is boring and sucks. Persians FTW
