@cindyainsworth7570 I agree Cindy. I sometimes fail to appreciate that Africa is a continent and each country has its own legislations. I support HERD, SWT and Retiti plus a wonderful Ethical Sancutaty in Brazil who care for rescued older Asian Elephants. They now have a huge area allocated for elder rescued African Elephants who are finally on their way after so many obstacles due to ridiculous bureaucracy, and some in Asia which is a whole different situation and the way many Asian Elephants are treated is horrendous and deeply distressing. Adine was right at home with the young Elephants at Voi and I'm certain they knew she is a kindred spirit. Sheldrick is a huge organisation with a long history. I love their work. I also Love HERD whose circumstances are so different and all the Sanctuaries who save and care for these Beautiful, vital creatures. I give thanks tor them all. 💚🐘💚🙏🙏

I'm very sorry for the loss of your dear Maddie! You don't say if she's a cat or a dog, but it doesn't matter. They are ALL family! I have 6 rescue cats, and although I have 5 adult children and one adult grandson, my cats are what gets me up in the morning. Loss and grief are truly awful emotions to experience and SO painful. I have had an awful year, and although 1997 was Queen Elizabeth's annis horribilus, both 2003 and 2024 have been mine. I am only here because of these felines. I wish that I could take away the pain you are experiencing now, but I can say that it will, in time, get better. We are so blessed to have them in our lives, even for a short while. Being humans, our lives are so long, and there's so short, but we all get old! Your girl Maddy KNEW love and sadly it's not something which every animal recieves although they all deserve it! I, too, have a daughter Madeline, but I call her Maddy, so I will remember your friend. My condolences on your loss! Take care now from country NSW Australia.

And the order and system that they all follow from the feeding to other activities are just so effective, considering the large number of ellies in their care. It's so amazing. Fascinating how the different approaches in the two countries work. In Kenya, there don't appear to be any adult elephants around the calves. How do the calves then learn to behave in a normal mixed herd?
@geoffmaloney2717Ай бұрын
Two reasons for this 1. the orphans are reintegrated from the Nairobi nursery at approximately 3-4 years old and can take up to another 6 or so years to be fully in the wild. They then join ex orphan herds or wild herds. Some of the ex orphans like Yatta and Wendi are 25 years old and have their own children and grandchildren, wild born. 2. there are many younger elephants at Voi as many rescued from the bad drought of 2022 by passed the nursery (completely full) and went straight to Voi. So as they get older the elephants get taught from ex Orphans and slowly start to rewild by staying out at night and not sleeping in the stockade, eventually not coming back to the Stockade to sleep at all (but still visiting, especially when they have their own babies, they all come back to show off the calf to their human family)
@jeps1973Ай бұрын
Because Adine's org is different and the way S Africa does this is very different. Sheldrick is a straight up orphanage that rewilds the orphans when they are ready they join wild eles at one of the reintegration units. Adine's HERD is not going to go to the wild they are protected by her org. In Kenya, the eles at Sheldrick go from Nairobi Nursery to one of 3 reintegration unites which are situated in a way to allow the orphans to hang out and meet with ex Orphans who are wild and come by to visit as well as wild ele families who know those spots are safe areas that provide lucerene and water areas for them. So the kids who they want to reintegrate get to talk to and hang out with these visitors over years and eventually they end up joining who they want to.

I think the first was Rokka and the second was Lemeki. Always enjoy watching your videos Adine, such wonderful interactions with the eles, they seem so calm and relaxed, so much affection among them and also for their carers. Can't believe it's been four years now for me! Cheers and best wishes, Michael

What a gorgeous herd.. It appears the difference in the sand/mud makes them appear more red, like the sand. Precious little moments between Adine and a couple ellies. I love them ellies ❤❤

Yes the minerals in diff parts of Kenya make them different colors.

@@jeps1973 Yes, that has been interesting to me and eventually figured out in different areas of Africa the sand is different. Unique and beautiful. I'm from northern America so you can imagine it's blah lol. But I am now educated that it's the minerals that make that change in color. Thank you

Young Adine surely must have had a teddy ellie, not a teddy bear 😇 Love the way ellies keep coming in waves 😍 And then, splash time for everyone 💦😊 ❤🐘❤🐘❤🐘

It's easy to imagine young Adine with a teddy elephant instead of a teddy bear! Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

I love how the Kendrick elephants become copper color, the color of their soil. Very sweet running for milk time. Beautiful yet sad they lost their moms The water must have metals too to be a beautiful green blue color,i have a well and my tub filled with water is the color of a beautiful ocean blue/ green
@jeps1973Ай бұрын
It depends where in the country they are. Some areas have the soil that turns them bronzy and otheres are in areas that they are tanish. It just depends on the minerals in the soil.

It's amazing how the environment can influence the elephants' colouring, isn't it?

it's both intriguing and funny to watch these elephant calves running towards their milk bottles in manageable small groups. how do the carers time this? why is it not a horde of elephant calves running all at once? they all carry their inner clock and know when it is time for their bottles, right? having them come in small groups must be making matters so much easier for the carers.
@jeps1973Ай бұрын
They break them up into groups somehow. They been doing it for years. You should go to their channels. They have so many years of videos to watch.

@embreis2257: - The process of feeding orphaned calves at the VOI integration unit is indeed fascinating. The calves are usually fed in groups to ensure that each one gets the necessary nutrition without causing too much chaos. The caregivers have a well-organized system where they time the feedings so that one group finishes before the next group comes in. This helps manage the feeding process smoothly and ensures that each calf gets the attention it needs. The calves quickly learn the routine and come for their bottles in an orderly manner.
