Watching online bridge has allowed me to see some of the most common bidding errors.
Responding to 1 of a suit with 1NT (6-9pts) rather than 1 of a suit
Not supporting your partner’s overcall with 3 trumps
Overcalling with a 4 card suit
Not jumping with 9+ points in response to a takeout double
Not doubling when the opponents are sacrificing against you
Opening with a weak Two, with a 7-card suit.
Raising your own pre-empt
Raising your partner’s minor when you have a 4-card major you could bid
The links to the hands are:
Responding 1NT when you could bid your own suit:
• tinyurl.com/24hf3p6o Responding 1NT to 1H, tinyurl.com/285xmnhj when you should bid 1S.
• Even if you bid 1S, if there is no fit, you may end up in 1NT either way tinyurl.com/28bl2nr2
Overcalling a 4-card suit
• East cannot overcall, and NS may end in 1NT, or 2D tinyurl.com/29dp2kyo POLL EAST’s BID 1NT could be defeated. This hand was actually played in spades, which did not go well tinyurl.com/292432es Board 13 from www.bridgewebs.com/cgi-bin/bw...
Raising partner’s minor rather than bidding a major
• tinyurl.com/2p9yyk2w played in 3D POLL NORTH’S BID
• Rather than 4S tinyurl.com/2p9bhj3d
• tinyurl.com/2y8murjj or if there is not fit. Could lead to 3NT +1 (430), better and easier than 5D+1 (420) tinyurl.com/2cga8hgf
Preempting with a Weak 2 with a 7 card suit
• Should open 3H tinyurl.com/2ajkkf55 - down 2, perhaps
• But if you open 2H, the opps will find their spade sit 4S +1 tinyurl.com/26u4gasx
If you open 2H you should let NS play 2S
• Could go down tinyurl.com/25ebnqwf
• Do not be tempted to raise your pre-empt tinyurl.com/2ywz4he8
