A 42-inch flat-screen OLED TV which can transform into a curved gaming monitor? Sounds like pie in the sky, but the LG OLED Flex (model number LX3) is a very real product that has just been launched at the IFA 2022 consumer electronics trade show in Berlin.
The LG OLED Flex is basically a bendable 42-inch C2, featuring a 4K UHD resolution of 3840x2160, OLED evo technology (without Brightness Booster), α9 Gen5 processor, four HDMI 2.1 ports with full 48Gbps bandwidth supporting 4K 120Hz gameplay, Dolby Vision, Freesync Premium & G-SYNC compatibility, as well as WebOS 22 Smart TV platform. The key differences are its adjustability into a curved screen, as well as around 25% less reflectance than the LG C2.
The "Includes Paid Promotion" message in this video refers to the sponsorship by UK online retailer Box.co.uk. If you're thinking about getting a new TV, please support this channel by considering buying from them:

I always thought that curved monitors/tvs were stupid because you had to sit at the focus of the parabola for it to work. But this solution solves that issue. Now curved displays have my attention

It's interesting. I bought my C2 not realizing that LG had long stopped making curved screens. I always thought the "C" line was the curved models, much like the C6 vs B6 for example. The weird thing is, when sitting at normal PC distances, the screen's larger size actually makes me feel like I'm seeing a screen that curves in the *opposite* direction, and what you said here makes perfect sense as to why that is, because the sides of the screen are further away from your eyes, so it can feel like the sides of the screen are getting further and further away compared to the center of the screen, giving it a weird effect of feeling like a convex curve at times. Although i have gotten used to it by now so I don't notice it as much.
@GraveUypo
@GraveUypo Жыл бұрын
never felt the convex effect, but the "oh damnit the side of the tv is too far away, i'll have to physically move closer to read that", yep, felt that before.

Me and my friend bought the LG C2 42 inch for PC gaming. We are both gamers but I was the one exposed to a curved monitor for years. Because of this, I was the only one experiencing this convex effect since I've been playing games on a curved monitor.

For flat monitors, I don't buy the blurriness argument, and I daily drive a 42" C2. Sure, it's at a slightly different focal plane compared to the center of the screen, but if you're looking in the center the peripheral will be blurry anyway due to it being outside your fovea. And if you're looking directly at the periphery, your eye's focus adjusts ever-so-slightly to compensate, to the point I legitimately never notice. What is more noticeable is the tilt in content as it gets closer to the edge; windows are noticeably at a different angle than your eye (up to 45 degrees off at the very edge). The curve could be nice for desktop work to make everything feel equidistant. However, in gaming this actually isn't an issue because the perspective projection from 3D->2D is based on the FOV and assumes a flat monitor, causing a natural "reverse warping" so that from your viewpoint everything looks good. However, flat monitors essentially "waste" pixels in the periphery due to having a higher effective PPD in an area that doesn't matter as much, and curving also would give you a slightly higher FOV, so I could still see the benefit of curving *if* the game were able to adjust their perspective projection to match, which none do AFAIK. So ironically that warping done by perspective projection would now hurt more than it helps, which is more of a tradeoff IMO than the FOV gain and evenness of focal distance and pixel density. :(

"but if you're looking in the center the peripheral will be blurry anyway due to it being outside your fovea" Thanks the point, at that width, with a proper curve/distance, it won't be.
@Aurora12488
@Aurora12488 Жыл бұрын
@@GahloWake Your fovea only can focus on the central 2 degrees of your FOV. It's incredibly small. Our eyes just move around a lot to compensate. The curve and distance we're talking about here have essentially no effect on that particular form of blurriness.

absolutly right! 3d games all represent rectangular projection - I mean their virtual cameras all acts as common rectangular photo-video cameras, having flat sensor/film. So all games are supposed to be played on flat screen for natural experience . Curved screen is cylindrical projection and I don't know games supporting it.

One glaring issue I see is the stand. The C2 stand was finally changed to better sit on the back of a desk, while this solid hunk looks like it takes away ~20-25cm of depth from your desk. Certainly not ideal, but then again it has height support. They need to figure out a way to add a VESA mount to this.

It's cute - but it is clearly a "test of concept" with all the wacky extras on it - I expect a trimmed down version might follow - or they might go the other way and sell an even more loony expensive one as a "Life style" TV/Monitor. Since it already has a motor on it and it's kinda tiny they could try including a 90 degree rotation function too so it can be used in Portrait mode too. even it is just a simple mechanical lock and swivel instead. Such a function has some uses - such as for mobile sourced content - as a webcam platform for connection to someone on a phone, or for playing old school vertical scrolling shoot e'm ups. It also would allow LG to have some fun with some different art in the Gallery mode too. I'd say something like this is a nice Monitor to use for those who have a Driving game focused set up with a chair and wheel - it seems well suited to that. Utterly useless as a PC monitor of course.

I think I had about 15 opinions at the end of the two hours and 8 of those people said where the TVs any different. I'd rather have LG launch a proper heatsink for their 42 inch TVs so gamers can hit 1000 nits peak brightness for true HDR, instead of this motor gimmick to curve the screen.

I don't give a shit about 1000 nits, my eyes burn enough already at 20% brightness.

Just buy LED/LCD. OLEDs CANNOT SUSTAIN HIGH BRIGHTNESS FULL SCREEN OR 50 PERCENT WINDOWS SIZE. AND YOU WILL TORTURE OLEDs with that HDR even if it has Heatsink
@Frencho9
@Frencho9 Жыл бұрын
@@abeachristine5446 No, LCDs don't have true blacks/infinite ratio and other manufacturers manage to hit 1000 nits on 10% window with heatsinks, plus it helps with longevity of the screen to have a heatsinks. OLED Heatsinks is love! Cmon LG bring rm to 42 inch screens!

Saw the monitor with my own eyes at IFA yesterday. Several units weren't able to turn completely flat, there was still a slight curve at both edges...

That's okay by me. I wish it stayed curved all the time. don't need a electric curve on it. Just a manual would be fine.

It's looks like it's permanently attached as you can't wall mount it (no VESA) and the motor has to be powered and connected to the mechanism somehow.

Yeah, I think Asus approach is better but I would prefer an LG option of the same.

Cool, but OLEDs are expensive enough as is. I can already tell that it will simply cost too much for what it offers extra.
