Dragonchiller for what I’ve seen ferrari’s don’t go 10k-15k miles without needing some repairs, he should try to fix right now, and don’t have to worry later. edit: I mean fix it he right way from the the start and don’t go the cheap shady route
@mikemarler82245 жыл бұрын
If Sam says it's leaking "A little" oil, it's probably a big puddle in the driveway. He's clearly afraid to do the real work of properly maintaining an exotic car (or paying to have it done). Much of the work he's already done could have been easily and more quickly done on the bench when the motor came out for the oil seal repair. Trying to cheap out, or take the easy way, often leads to wasted effort and doing things twice. For example, if it took him 8 hours to do the timing belts when the engine was in the car, he wasted at least 6 or 7 hours, because it's a slam dunk job when the motor is already on the bench. With cars like these, you don't cheap out on maintenance, and you do as much as you can when the engine or trans is out of the car.

Honestly I ran Bar's rear main seal stop-leak in a Lotus Esprit and it worked like a charm. Five years later and it's still fine, no complications. It's at least worth a try if you're already willing to do the full repair anyway. Worst case it doesn't work and you have to do the seal. But it's a fully chemical formula, so there's no particulates in there to clog anything (like head gasket sealer has) so it's really a risk-free option. And I would not want to tear that car down again after all that.

I'm guessing that as the knowledge of what was needed to be done was shared here, if you were to do the same project at home, you'd have the knowledge here, so it's not relevant to add the expert advice. I think this makes sense. The $10k of parts and transport is a fair number to give you a sense of what it takes. Of course every project will be different, and so whatever expert advice would be different too. You could go to the extreme and add the price of phone calls to the parts suppliers ... the cost of delivery of parts ... the cost of petrol and wear and tear on your vehicle driving to/ from suppliers etc etc. It's very possible the advice and help from Ratarosa could have been supplied offline in a forum or something (I'm guessing as a super enthusiast he's only too happy to help problem solve on various forums ). The 360 is one of the most usable and sensible Ferraris, when sorted you'll have a reliable car for a bargain price. Magic to drive and the 430 is basically the same car with a few different panels. This is probably one of the first Ferraris that were reliable, handled properly and didn't rust away as it is aluminium. Also very practical as it doesn't have bits of bodywork and wheels that get scuffed in normal use. At the end of the day though, you could have probably bought one properly maintained, for about the same price, but then we would have missed the entertainment. I was jumping about when you put all that oil in, but if you never had a dry sump car before, how would you know not to check the oil without the engine running? Keep up the good work. I watch you, Tavarish, Videobob, and Rich rebuilds. Keep up the good work!

My .02 * Don't do the rear main seal right now unless it is leaking more than a couple drops every day. * While not perfect; polishing, sealing, waxing, and coating will bring out the beauty of that Ferrari paint even more. A respray may actually look worse. * Since it sounds like you are keeping it long term, buy the nicer tires now so you don't put it into a tree cause the cheap tires lost traction suddenly. * Make sure you let the transmission warm up a little in 1st gear before you shift into 2nd. * These like to be driven hard once in a while. Just be nice (no launches!!) * Loved watching these videos of you doing the work yourself. I appreciate your eagerness to learn and admit when mistakes were made. Use Blue Devil stop leak, for rear main seal less than 20 dollars on Amazon. Local parts stores cost a little bit more. But if don't work they give you your money back. I have use Blue Devil stop leak produts, and they work great.

I once put four ounces of DOT3 brake fluid into a Lamborghini Countach (with owner's concurrence) to cause some seal swelling in order to forestall a rear main seal replacement. It worked better than expected, caused no other problems, and the "repair" lasted for over ten years, after which he sold the vehicle to someone in China.

I recently retired, but I owned a repair shop for the past twenty-five years. One can learn a lot from workmates and a lot more from reading and actually doing the work. Salvage kills it. Also, the Frankenstein floor pan repair is also bad for the value. I would reshoot only the front bumper and rear bumper. If the rockers are plastic, I'd reshoot them as well. If metal, leave them alone. Last, I'd give the rear seal fix in a can stuff a try. The worst thing is that it'll swell the gasket and force you to change it ... though it can swell all the gaskets and then you could have leaks everywhere. I have heard that the new gasket fix stuff is different and doesn't just swell up gaskets, so do a little research and give it a shot. Great project! I love watching your videos!

It's a nice learning experience for everyone, to be sure. I will never own any Ferrarri, nor even rent one for a day. But, I sure enjoyed this series that you did Sam. So, thanks a lot I really mean that. Oh, please use AT205 Reseal on both the transmission and engine for the seals.

I just changed my real crank seal (and clutch), though not on a ferrari. Mine was leaking, and actually cause it was placed too deep into the engine. If it had moved or been misplaced by the previous workshop I don't know. But I was adviced by the shop to try a bottle of gasket fix, but it would not have worked as the seal was not correctly fitted. I would advice you to remove the gearbox, inspect the clutch parts to factory service limits, and change bearings as necessary. The bearings will probably fail before the clutch does anyway as mine was rumbling, but clutch had a year left.

Do the clutch. My 2007 F430 ate a good clutch with around 70% wear (this is only an estimate in the transmission computer by the way, your 50% clutch could still be 90% worn) in 500 miles because the release bearing was sticking from the car 'not being used enough'. The dealership did the clutch but not the main seal (they said it 'looked fine') when I got it home it was leaking so they had to do the job again. Luckily I only had to pay for the clutch and bearing install which was £5500 (about $7100) If I'd parked the car up over winter and noticed the leak a few months later I would have had to pay again!

LOL...that is beyond paint correction. Some was flat out damage through base and primer, and most was through the clear. In order to repair you still have to spray and blend the panels, and considering the small size of the panels, you might as well spray the whole car.
