Your guess that there was a major oil leak on that first spark plug was all wrong. The oil was on the outside of the plug; the part that stays outside the engine. So, if there is oil there, then you are guaranteed to have a valve cover gasket leak. It would tell you nothing about the compression on that one cylinder.
@anrubossert39344 жыл бұрын
It's really annoying to see people misdiagnose quite obvious problems and be so confident in their diagnosis....SMH
@Texasknowhow4 жыл бұрын
actschp1 - I was going to comment on this as well. The BMW engines have a bad trait (several actually) with the valve covers leaking oil into the spark plug wells. That’s all that is. It’s usually worst on the back ones as the engine is at a slight angle back (like most engines) so the oil pools back there inside the valve covers. It can lead to misfire faults on those plugs as the oil and dirt will conduct and lead to a current path to the block inside the well / outside the cylinder when the coil discharges. I have an 04 RR. About to start a series here on KZbin restoring it. Gonna be a great series.
@nickmeyer2374 жыл бұрын
actschp1 i came here to comment the same thing. Dont get me wrong i think this range rover is junk and is worth parts but oil on the outside of a spark plug is a valve cover gasket not telling on where the head gasket may be leaking from. There are other places that water could be coming from and a coolant compression visual check might help find it. I hate when misinformation is put out on some of these channels.

Both cylinder head gaskets (you wouldn't do just one of them) on that rig, done by a shop that knows what they're doing (such as resurface and pressure check the heads, for a start), would run at least about 6-7000 dollars. Honestly it's usually better to just find a solid used engine from a wrecker and swap that in, rather than spend all that money gambling that the bottom half of the engine is going to hold up much longer, after having been run with coolant/water contaminated oil for who knows how long.

That oil though has leaked from above as in a loose/shrunk cam cover gasket & migrated down to pool in the sparkplug recess ON THE OUTSIDE of it. I'm gonna warn you that in my going on 20 years of Jag/Land Rover experience, the L322 Range Rovers are top 3 worst Land Rovers ever made. NOW, I'll give you some help because you seem like a nice guy. 1: Pixel Fix sells a repair kit for the instrument cluster, I have installed 3 and they all work. 2: The radio is trash go after market 3: Check the LR storage area (radio receiver, cd changer area) for water leaks as the L322 model had horrid water leak issues 4: Take care if you want to do gasket work on the engine as the upper timing covers require special tools to install 5: If you want to pull heads you can find the timing tools on Amazon or at British Atlantic 6: If your going to stuff a used engine in, you can't use one from a car (we had a aftermarket warranty find this out the hard way) 7: No Starts can be caused by a bad steering column lock module (this prevents the key from turning) There are a bunch of other things too but these are the ones I have seen get bit by the most, good luck you'll need all of it.

There is another trick to verify a blown headgasket! Fill the Radiator with straight water and pressure test the cooling system with all spark plugs out. Disable the Fuel system! Run vacuum hose tubing through each Cylinder and listen for sound and smell. A bad head gasget will produce noises through the effected side and also produce more hydrocarbons. The next step is a Cylinder Leakage test and final one to block test with dye to rule out a cracked block.

Old mechanic fact: If you place a fully charged battery directly on concrete (cement driveway) ... the battery will be dead in a day or two. Instead... if you place a piece of wood under a fully charged battery (between the bottom of the battery and the concrete ) the battery will still be fully charged weeks, months later.

That is the M54 engine I believe. I've worked on one with about 300k miles. That motor ate the ENTIRE timing chain system. All guides were ruined (some completely chewed up and in teh bottom of the pan). It had oil leaks everywhere. Worst part, it only got like 12mpg. As nice as it is, I just can't excuse driving anything that gets such poor fuel economy.

I've always said that with cars you either pay it on the front end (new car), or you pay it on the back end (used car). However sir, you have successfully proven that it is possible to pay it on the front end AND the back end, at the very same time. Seriously, good luck to you on this project car. If you ever get it running, my advice is to sell it as soon as possible for whatever you can get out of it.

My brother bought a mint Land Rover, much like this, for 1500. 80k miles, listed at 8k for weeks. At least 20 people had passed on it, even when reduced to 4k because it would turn over at all. New battery, new tires, dealer serviced 100 percent. It was the cleanest used vehicle I have ever seen. My bro had done some research...showed up with cash, did the deal. Turned the key 5 times in the door lock and all the lights flash and horn beeps. Turns out, these trucks have an ignition disabling system if the battery is disconnected. Dealership charges 75 bucks for this procedure and keeps it a secret. He started it up that day and drove it home and the lady was just happy it was gone.

I bought a 2000 silverado crew cab 4x4 clean title sight unseen with unknown mileage but there was a video of showing it driving. also said it might need power steering work. it had to be jumped and wouldnt stay running, got lucky was only the battery. Power steering only works turning left. digital odometer was dead when i fixed it it had 278k miles on it!!! 2 years later it is still running, I only drive it on weekends. this is risky business buying from salvage auctions.

I had a 2006 Range Rover HSE that looked just like this one, with the exception of the stupid looking grill mount and running boards, for almost 12 years. I bought it as a lease return with 24,000 miles on it and spent about an average of $1,000 per year on maintenance and repair in that time. Expensive? Yes, but I liked it so much I bought another (HSEtd6 diesel this time) and freaking love it.

Sam, word of advice, never keep or charge batteries on a concrete floor. Always dsit them on a piece of timber or something so they are 'elevated'. I was a mechanic for 10 years and this was taught to us very early on. I am not sure why exactly but it was always a big no no.
@Budhah12 жыл бұрын

This theory originated from back in the day when batteries had rubber cases. The water/ electrolyte was able to in some cases permeate the rubber and could cause a dead short from plate to plate if a puddle was to form. Modern batteries are not meant to have this problem. I’m a mechanic also and I sometime can’t help but charge them on a piece of timber but that’s also just a force of habit because of how I was taught.

I had a 2013 Land Rover HSE luxury edition sport. It had less than 33,000 miles. I sold it two days ago for $25,000.00 I am happy. Drove it for almost 7 years and still got $25 thousand. I love them.
