I got onto a hotel elevator with an Asian family & at my floor, I was so enamoured with their cheery sweetness, I mimicked their accent in saying goodbye. I stood looking at their frozen faces with my frozen face, stammered my apologies & ran to my room. I've always wondered if they thought I was taunting them. I still feel frozen horror when I remember.

My beloved, born in NY but Memphis raised, upon meeting my very rural and "holler" grandparents broke out into southern accent, it was embarrassing. Thankfully my grandparents loved him to pieces, but it really hurt my ears. But I think many of us do it without intention or malice. Our brain kicks in to make us appear connected to people whom we like and want to fit in with.

I always end up impersonating or absorbing the vibe of someone. I look like a dork, but I'm friendly with anyone friendly to me, so I hang out or talk to a myriad types of people, and sometimes I end up talking like them. LIke, "Right, peace out yo." or "yeah see ya man" when in reality, I'm more of a "bye haha" person. same with hand gestures. i'll mimic them. or people with accents, I start speaking slowly so they can understand me better. It's awful 😂

I love how many people also stood up for him. Reaching for negative comments is a tell. Not how I want to live. You spend your energy looking for negative points to make, you'll find plenty of negative in your life. Or conversely, look for the positives, the light you share radiates right back to you. Thanks for your light.

I don't get why it's too far for the audience? It's very common for Muslim society to have arranged marriage, which frustrates many young Muslims. Usama made a self-deprecating joke and satire about that aspect of his own culture. Not entirely different when an American pokes fun of cowboyriding, SUV-driving, yeehawing, gun-toting American who waves assault rifles around, because there is a kernel of truth to that absurdity.
