I had a 2005 E55 for about 2 years. I had to replace one strut and other than that the car gave me zero issues. I bought it with 138k on it and sold it with 160k on it. I've had many cars, but that's one of very few that I really regret selling. I did have some minor mods; belt wrap, sc pulley and separate intercooler reservoir but stock tune. I don't ever recall a drive that I wasn't completely satisfied with the car. And a little tip, the later years of the e55 05-06 have all of the factory upgrades that the early models didn't get. Some of which make the later years much easier to work on yourself. I enjoyed the video.

Sad to see your E55 go. Ive had an identical one for a few years now and it's been super reliable. It has 117K miles and the only time I got a CEL was for that same fuel vent line issue that happened to yours. A simple hose clamp solved that. Just got back from a 700 mile road trip with no issues. I do keep it well maintained and do lots of preventative maintenance. Recently started upgrading it with a new air intake cooling system. Just did the shocks and since its still on original airmatic so I'm planning on changing struts, air valve and possibly compressor. You were spot on when you said if you like to work on your cars the E55 is for you, there are alot of resources online for this platform. I would not trade mines for the world. In fact, I'm considering of getting a second E55! 😎

Anyone that wants to own any Benz over 10 years old should be prepared for repairs, and not cheap ones. I have an 01 CL55 AMG and 04 CLK500, AMG costs more but it’s also the one I beat on for fun, CLK has been pretty good, just updated the suspension due to age. In my 19 years of owning cars, I’ve had 8 older Benz, none have been cheap to own once repairs come into play.

@jouseyjunior88743 ай бұрын
here is my take on owning an older European car. First off, all car manufacturers have good and bad cars. I bought a 335d 2 years ago because it was the car I wanted for the prior 3 years. once deleted, its fast, reliable, good MPGs, and decent looks. However, before buying it everyone told me not to. People said BMWs were unreliable, because it was an older car it would have a bunch of problems and that nobody worked on diesels, specially German diesels. I ended up getting the car and here are my takes. yes, parts are a little more expensive than your Asian or American siblings, However, if you buy your parts from FCP euro you know you will be getting the part that came with your car out of the factory, no Chinese made parts (for the most part). secondly, how expensive parts are is not what kills these cars. its the labor and time it takes to replace certain parts Ex. I recently replaced my valve cover gasket on my 335d; to do this I had to remove the intake manifold (which is already a pain), remove fuel line, vacuum lines, vacuum reservoir assembly (also a pain of its own), buy a special tool for removing injectors, remove all plastics surrounding the windshield wipers, remove intake, PCV valve and so on. All in it took me two days and about 15 hours to complete this. while your American v8 or inline 4 Asian car would have taken at the most, on most cars, about 3 hours max only having to remove injectors, oil cap, about 20-30 bolts and that's it. If all the work I've done to my car would have been done at a shop or dealership, I can tell you for a fact I would be financially broken right now. To put it into perspective, I spent about $380 in parts doing my transmission service and about 10 hours, valve cover gasket by itself is cheap but I bought all required components and a lot of O-rings and washers that the manual also recommended to replace was about $120 in parts and like I previously said 15 hours to replace. In just these two jobs I spent $500 which may sound like a good amount for some, but I did save $3750 in labor by doing it myself (# of hours x $150 hourly rate) and Third, Yes, some European cars are over engineered and have many sensors and many moving mechanical components (that didn't need to be engineered so complicated, like cup holders) that break all the time, give you codes or cause inconveniences. For the little mechanical components that break, YOU WILL HAVE TO LIVE WITH THAT, unless you want to replace every single little broken thing (which I do not recommend). As for the sensors, these cars have a lot of useless sensors that are not worth replacing EX: my car has a sensor that measures air quality, if it detects bad air quality the AC will shut off and no air from the outside will get brought inside the cabin. The only scenario I can think this sensor would be useful for, is if I'm in the middle of a wild fire and I need to drive a few miles to get away from the bad air quality. I do not live nor am I stupid enough to be caught in a situation like that, and even if I am, I don't care if I have to breath bad air quality for a few minutes to get away from the chaos. I do have a code for this sensor but I'm not replacing it, not because I will be bankrupt but because it's useless. Now IM NOT SAYING DRIVE WITH THE CEL ON, I am saying that some sensors are not worth replacing (mainly the ones that don't throw a CEL light, yes, there are codes that don't necessarily turn the CEL light on). For the sensors that do throw a check engine light, DO YOUR RESEARCH, I don't care if your not mechanically incline, do your research, it always pays off knowing a little more about your car. A lot of these European cars NEED to have a healthy battery to have all those sensors properly working, if you cant afford an AGM (most European car use AGM batteries) then don't even buy an European car in the first place. I'm not trying to be rude but if you cant keep the basic needs of your car up to date, then you shouldn't own one. Lastly, don't cheap out on European cars. If you get a hint that the car was modified then don't get it. Why, because a lot of modifications require deletion of sensors or modifying wire harnesses. Unless your extremely familiar with the required modifications related to the tune, then don't buy one. Its always better to pay a little more for a car that was well maintain then buy a lemon that will cost you more to restore than if you would of just sucked it up and pay a little extra to begin with. 335Ds are not well know in the U.S. and were only brought for 3 years, therefore not many people know about them and was easy (relatively, cause 335Ds are pretty rare in the U.S. ) to find one that was untouched and well taken care of. I'm currently looking for an E55 and I'm finding it really hard to find one that hasn't been abused and that is in healthy conditions, so trust me when I say I have time to spare when looking for this next car. Conclusion, the only two kinds of people that I recommend older European cars are mechanically incline people (I never worked on a diesel engine before owning this car, but I managed to educate myself on it) and financially stable people. Not high schoolers that don't know shit about cars nor are financially stable to own one (if your NOT going to work on it yourself). If parents are paying for it, then I doubt any sane parent will let you buy a 10+ year old European car, they're better off buying you a brand new Honda civic or a Toyota corolla.

The biggest thing is sales tax and registration on the car. You lost $800-1k dollars on that part of it. Everytime you change out cars you are paying the tax man. Just sold mine stock E55 at 150k miles cause I couldn't keep up with the repairs. First 2 years were great, but the 3rd year it seemed like every time i drove it something else broke. And the previous owner had already replaced the air struts ($4k) Bought for $7,500 in 2020 - spent $2,000 in deferred maintenance(repairs myself), then the trans went $3,500 = sold for $11,400 on Cars and Bids with an exhaust leak and sagging headliner. Drove for 3 years (13,000 miles cost me $3,000 including the taxes and delivery fee). New buyer made it 1,100 miles back home, but it started having a misfire issue around 10hr of driving (coils and/or wires). Still my favorite car I've owned though, and I still want another used AMG, go figure.

I like the premise of this setup, but the execution is off. It cost you more than $395 to own the car. Your time is always worth something. If you were not fixing the wiper blade motor/oil lines you could have been doing something else with that time (enjoying a different vehicle, a day with someone you haven't seen for while, a day trip for fun etc...) You can't just look at monetary value when figuring out what something cost and if you want to do that you missed the cost of insurance. While you may not have driven more, costing you more in fuel, would you have driven something else that would get better milage? If you would have driven something with less fuel efficiency than that amount saved should be calculated.

Bosch, Mitsubishi, etc make most of the parts on the car and then mercedes takes that part and puts their symbol on. Then they charge 2x as much money. There are plenty of after market companies making better products for thousand of cars. They make them out of better materials many times. They dont have to make everything as cheaply as possible. Dont listen to youtube children with too much money and not enough brains

Soooo $395 for 6 months of ownership? That’s nothing, especially since you only paid 7500 and it likely would’ve been trouble free for awhile after that.

buying these cars looking for the lowest priced one and high mileage just like any car will cost you. In the AMG version it will cost you more. On cars like these research, receipts and excellent Carfax will help but not be all end all. I myself on mine have changed, 1 suspensinon airbag, tranny mount, brake light switch and just did the front brakes and the rest is just oil changes and I have 145k miles. It took me months to find it. Anything else is just mods I put money on. I will say most of these I looked at were just trashed, parked for a while or there driving around in them with the lights on the dash not caring to fix any of it which just adds up after a while and they get rid of it. I also have a 07 E550 and that other then oil changes, engine mounts 500 parts and labor, air pump which cost me 200 parts and labor, ac compressor cost me 600 parts and labor is all that I've spend on it in the past 4 years I've owned it. That has 168k miles.

What a stupid video. You didn’t even spend much money on it and it would’ve averaged out to much less given a longer time period of ownership.
