If electric vehicles are truly going to take over the market they cannot each have their own proprietary charging stations. There needs to be a single charging unit for all EVs. Imagine if Fords only ran on Ford gas from Ford's network of gas stations, Toyotas only ran on Toyota gas from their network, etc.

When I was in college for electrical engineering back in the 90’s, my professor said the cars of the future would be electric. He went on to say that you would buy a platform and then pick the bodies you would like. You would have a minivan body for the family and a pickup truck body in the garage for work. They could be easily swapped out in the garage. Everything was plug and play. He also said tv’s would be flat as a picture on the wall and car batteries would be smaller than a 9 volt battery.

I'm really excited about Rivian, I really believe they're going to do great. They're going to have their bumps just like every other car manufacturer starting out but once they have a solid foundation they're going to be one of the top manufacturers in my opinion. Now if I could just get the money to buy one.

I left Tesla Service as a Technician due to lack of growth opportunity, so I joined Rivian Corporate to work side by side with engineers and would not have to deal with customers ever again. Best career move I ever made. Keep the world adventurous forever!

Prices usually fall with volume. I don't like to be a pioneer on new products. Let others cover the initial cost of production and take the time to see if the product has any unacceptable issues.

China had plans to double their petroleum plastic manufacturing and this was years ago, they know the average American will not be able to afford these vehicles, that's where the huge push for ride sharing apps come in.

When I first saw the R1T on youtube, I was impressed. The real problem was that the price was prohibitive for most buyers. Now it sounds like it has come down to something almost reasonable. Progress.

Starting at $68,000….I wish them well…but the ford lightning I believe starts at $43,000….that’s a huge difference….I mean when you look around you’ll see 100s of ford trucks in a single day….this is more like a Range Rover….I might see 2 or 3 of those a day….

The problem with Ev's is battery replacement will be extremely expensive in the thousands I would imagine and end of life disposal. You cannot just throw them away as Lithium batteries are flammable and need to be recycled. If not we will have huge piles of spent EV batteries. Seems we are just swapping one problem for another. The cost of $60k - $70k is too high for a lot of people myself included.

Battery recycling is terribly inefficient at present and Tesla has yet to give their full support to the only battery refurbishing center in the country, Gruber Motors of Arizona. It seems individual modules within the battery pack have a tendency to fail before the battery pack's projected life span. Cool tech for sure, but without aftermarket support, EVs have zero sustainability

No one ever talks about the electric grid upgrades needed to charge electric vehicles. Upgrades from the home to the generator will be needed if too many of these charging sites are built. So factor in the resources and carbon foot print to upgrade the electrical system. It's one of the Pandora box's no one's talking about.

Give me a break. The cost to build more renewable energy sources with battery back up is significantly less than the cost to build carbon based generation. That said it would be best to also start building new and safe nuclear generation capacity as well.

@@gordoncrespo2045 Utilities build gas fired plants to pick up the slack of renewables. And battery backup for when the sun does not shine and wind does not blow is not in use on a scale that does much. Those batteries only last so long need replaced. What happens when the sun does not shine bright for 2 or 3 days in a row, the batteries go dead and you have to rely on a another source of power. Most batteries are being used to peak shaving not actual demand at night.

@@elkhunter3382 of course it’s not. It’s a nascent industry and will take time to build. But as I mentioned even now it’s much less expensive to build renewable energy sources with battery back up than coal, oil or natural gas peaker plants and eventually as solar, wind and battery tech improve it will be cheaper to build those instead of any other form of energy generation. That’s probably at least a decade away but we all better hope we do it because it CO2 emissions are dramatically reduced we will have a lot more to worry about than the cost of EV’s.

I was going to order one. After I added all the options, the out the door price was almost $100k. Ergo, I decided to wait for F, TSLA, and TM to what they have to offer in a year or two. Financially, $100k is a lot of money for most people to purchase a vehicle. The ROI is simply awful.

I wouldn't necessarily say Rivian is ahead. I think it's too early to tell whether they're ahead of Tesla, behind Tesla, or matching traditional manufactures. Using a modular platform that can be stretched and altered to suit different needs is already commonly done (like the Volkswagen group sharing parts between Bentley, Porsche, Audi, and Lamborghini). In the EV space, KIA/Hyundai/Genesis are already sharing modular platforms to make the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and the Genesis GV60. Tesla's doing the same, with the Model 3 and Model Y sharing as much similarity as possible yet still fulfilling the sedan and crossover markets. I think only time will tell. Either way, I'm glad to see more and more competition in the EV space, it'll push companies harder against each other, and in turn, give us better EVs

Especially since what they showed on battery day and AI day, it further cements to me that Tesla knows how to push the state of the art. I can go into the small technical details why I think Tesla is pulling off incredible feats of engineering (e.g. Gigacasting, integrating memory into their Autopilot systems, etc.), but I doubt people would like to listen to me nerd out on this

@@stoopidwookie1695 majority of humans on earth, and even a majority of people in America don’t even make $70,000 a year. The vast majority of cars on the road are less then $25,000. You could get a badass truck for 40-50k or you could get a basic truck for 30-40k. If you but this electric truck you also have to live in an area where there are charging stations around, otherwise you have to spend 10k installing a charging station in ur home, and spend massive amounts of money on ur electric bill every month from charging the thing. Most people can not afford that, this is a car for rich people just call it what it is.

I admit, I'm impressed by the power, the longevity of the charge and the versatility of production on the same "skateboard" base. It seems like Rivian had done its preparation and homework. The key will be the ability of the company to not over-innovate and cause theienown extinction. If that isn't enough of a threat, the ever changing battery technologies and the substances with which they're constructed could take a wet dream of an EV future and turn it into a nightmare of the next missing link of vehicle production. I wish Rivian the best. And, as an FJ owner and fan, I like the design and capabilities of the truck and SUV.

Bought a brand new 2006 Toyota Tacoma back in 2006 of course. Paid for a long ago, no major issues whatsoever. As this will be hard to believe I literally just changed the original battery last week. Other than that the only thing I ever had to do with it besides general maintenance, fluids, brakes, tires, is change one of the belts.

I have seen the truck in person at a trade show (but could not drive it) - it's a impressive chassis and definitely off-road capable. It seems like a mature platform already. I would be a buyer if the range was about 500 miles. And I don't like the industry trend of proprietary chargers - it would be nice to have standard fast chargers with the same software and plug types all over the US.

To me, that's where the Cybertruck shines, in the price versus specs department. If you're looking at performance and specs versus price alone the Cybertruck is hands down the winner between these two and any of the other electric trucks on the way. The Rivian has a lot of advantages though, is a good looking vehicle, and is going to beat Tesla to the market by about a year from what I'm hearing.

You may sell some cars, but if they are 20% more expensive than a Tesla, then your market is limited to the Tesla haters that don't mind paying more to get less.

What would you rather have.... a vehicle that breaks down every month or so and be able to fix it.... Or a vehicle that never breaks down because they dont have... Transmissions, Carburetors, Mufflers, Cam shafts, Timing Belts, Points system, Gas Filters, Oil Filters, Alternators, Starters, and the list goes on..... Booooo Hooooo... Infrastructure as in charging station is decades behind. Example: apartment complexes, how about city dwellers that have to park on the street. Charging station will have to be far more abundant then parking meters. What about the chargers that will be vandalized and components stolen for scrap. I can go on but I think you get the picture

I would love to buy a Rivian Truck to pull our 30 foot Toy Hauler Travel Trailer to go to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally every year, (we've been attending since 2005!), but at $70,000 and being 65, retired, we would have to sell our "paid off" house to buy one! Fortunately, our 1999 Silverado 2500 LD 4 X 4, gas 6.0L, (first year, new body style), 350,000 mile Chevy Truck, which we paid $3,000 for 7 years ago, we will still use it to make the 3,000 mile round trip, (with the original un-rebuilt engine), without burning a drop of oil between it's 5000 mile oil changes! Even with JB's $5 a gallon gas it's still doable. Let's go Brandon!

@@johncahill3644 tesla uses lithium ion batteries which need replacing (at the absolute most) every 10 years due to degradation. A battery costs about $12,000, not to mention how this car would be completely obselete in about 10 years time due to acceleration of electric car technology. Other problem is tesla won't let you fix their cars. You could actually fix a battery cell for a few thousand but tesla make you replace the whole thing as it means your more likely to buy a new car. Much like apple with phones they are vehemently against right to repair which doesn't make sense as they are supposed to be a green company.

Electric bill definitely won't be free either so there's always going to be a "fuel" cost, It wouldn't make sense to spend $50,000 to save $100/week so if anything get a used low mile hybrid I disagree with spending $45k on a Model 3 and you'll have it the rest of your life, It's not going to run forever eventually the battery will degrade and Tesla is Apple when it comes to repairing their products.

Giving the big companies a piece of the pie is probably the only way. Looks good as a base design. Parts being interchangeable is a great idea. Wonder if that will last? I think this obsession with the 0 to 60 performance is costing the overall design of efficiency. You need low end torque sometimes, but I would rather have distance than speed. Nice presentation!

I like the Rivian line up, but where is all the electricity going to come from to charge them? The gov't is supposed to be trying to raise taxes on oil, gas and natural gas today, along with adding further drilling restrictions. Heard the current admin wants gasoline at about $8/gallon plus they want to charge miles driven now, to collect for the road taxes that current EV owners don't have to pay. Things may turn bad soon.

Great truck, it's good they dropped the price some to about 70k but that is still too much for me. It is new technology, new plants, new everything so people like me can wait for awhile and most likely buy one new since the next new models will be even better. And by that time their charging network will be more available. For better or worse (for some people) it was Tesla who got EVs going and not GM contrary to Pres. DunderHead.

I knew a retired technical director from a major car manufacturer. He hoped that batteries could be interchangeable between cars and could be swapped at service stations by robotics using AI. At the "pump", the old battery is slid out and a recharged one is slotted in. The old one goes into a charging area below ground level with many other batteries on rotation and once charged is ready for another vehicle. The obstacle was getting all manufacturers to use the same battery in the same location under the car.

In China, there is the NIO, and it swaps battery packs (some KZbin examples). Elon decided charging stations was better; it may yet to prove a bad call. Time will tell.

NIO already dose this exact thing, they give you the option to buy the battery or lease it. You can charge them regularly but also bring them into a designated batter swaping station, park your car in the bay and robots dose the rest. The changing station are all over the place in China. They are going global.

They should have toaster sized modules that anyone could swap in their garage. They could have spares charging with solar panels during the day while you are at work for the next day. You just insert the number of modules you'll need for that day and that would save from hauling a heavy unneeded battery around all the time. You could also power your house during a power outage.

@@Xyquest I have wondered why someone doesn't come out with a main body that's short range with small swappable modules and has a trailer for longer ranges. If you want to go more than the, say, 40 miles it usually does and is near its max, you select the number of batteries you need and put them on the trailer for that distance need. The trailer could take you from, say, an 80 mile range, to up to a 400 range, by holding 1 to 9 modules. On long trips, depots can exchange modules. For interstate trips, depots can exchange trailers. You don't get out and swap modules along the way into the main body; it plugs in and the batteries are virtually on-board. I would have a solo car for work, and a family car, as well, since owning two vehicles per household is quite normal. You would only need the one trailer.

I am genuinely impressed by how far we have come with electric vehicles. I hope we go farther. Right now, however, I have a truck with a 36-gallon tank and on trips to North Carolina from Pennsylvania I can go on a tank and a half. My truck averages a little shy of 23 mpg on this trip. I only make one fuel stop in Virginia on the way back (A fuel stop can take maybe 5 minutes). I struggle with being reliant on a charging system network that is in its infancy. On the electric model, I can go 300 or 400 miles, and need to stop for 2 hours? I believe in the electric pickup design. I even love that the Ford offering can act as a generator for my house. I just feel like we're not quite there yet. Maybe it's a push forward, to go backward, to go forward. If my truck lasts 10 years from now, maybe I will be the one with range anxiety and feel differently. Let's not forget if we are just shifting the cost, when the price of electricity increases over the charging demand.

Pretty much this. EV is the future, and it is in its infancy. If you think about it, gas engines in their infancy were terribly inefficient and probably hard to fill up reliably, and find gas stations for. However, the EV industry needs early buy ins to keep getting better. Tesla is the most stable, but they need good competition to keep the research push going. I believe the Model S can get 80% charge in 30 minutes now. That's 19 minutes faster than last years model even. A thought I have is we will get bigger batteries until they solve the speed charging thermal issue. Once they do that, I see batteries getting a little smaller because the charge times won't be an issue. If they can get 80% charge in 10 minutes, I'd call the charging complaints a wash, as 10 minutes isn't that bad. Long trips me and the family would easily spend 15 minutes filling up, bathroom, snacks, etc.

Increased electricity demand will not change electricity prices the same way as electricity. Ultimately electric cars are so much more efficient then ICE cars that it will pretty much always be cheaper to run. Even including heat losses from generation it’s still substantially more efficient then gas.

I just wonder where all the extra electricity will come from to power everything. If you can't use fossil fuels to generate, the sun doesn't always shine, the wind doesn't always blow, even the rivers don't always flow consistently. How do you store all the energy so that the grid doesn't "brown out" when the demand out paces the generated energy? What about disposal of everything needed when the life cycle runs out? How much of the materials used will be recyclable? How will the raw materials be collected and refined? What is the estimated number of raw materials that are easily accessed and how much does the Earth have of each? I'm not knocking anything. I just think that we are not looking at the entire picture. As the song says, "Every Rose Has Its Thorn".

This is actually where Hydrogen might be of use. Solar and wind generated electricity can be stored as elemental Hydrogen or converted to ammonia. Old power generation plants can then be kept on line when needed powered by the ammonia instead of natural gas or coal. This is way cheaper than putting 2.1 trillion dollars worth of hydrogen fuel stations to make that system usable.

I like the Rivian truck. I think it looks great and has great utility. But can the company scale? Can they make 10 million cars a year? There are challenges at various levels of scale. The main points of failure now are battery and chip supply. Tesla can meet those challenges. So far no other car company can. They offer "models" but they don't sell units. I see Tesla cars on the road all the time. No Rivians. No Mach-E. No VW EV's. Just Tesla. Tesla is moving units out the door. Other companies have a veritable Victoria's Secret magazine full of models but they have no production volume to speak of. I want to see Rivian succeed. I'm not sure they will.

I pull up to charge at the station, to see a vehicle already charging, with 15 min. to go. I have to wait 35 min. to charge. No, I think commercial fleets will love these tho. Set up their own proprietary stations here and there for emergency maybe, but otherwise send half the delivery vehicles out, run a 4 hr. route, bring them in to charge, with the other half of the fleet charged and ready to finish the relay. I'm not driving from Tampa to Seattle in one any time soon.

EVs are ALL about the batteries, and until long lasting solid state batteries become commercially viable I'd be concerned about buying one. When the cost of replacing a battery pack can be tens of thousands of dollars, purchasing an EV could be an economically unwise decision. And depending on the kind of support the manufacturer provides to that EV, it might not be an environmentally friendly solution either.

I looked at two recent articles (written in March this year, from Car Magazine UK and Truecar) and one claims a 12 year life cycle, the other states 10. Both point out that heat can shorten a battery pack's lifespan, and one states that frequent rapid charging (among other things) will significantly reduce the lifespan of the battery pack. If you live in an area with unusually high ambient temperatures, then it's likely that you'll also experience a reduced battery pack lifespan - particularly if that battery pack uses passive cooling like the Nissan Leaf.

@@rhett7716 As I understand it, Tesla do make some of the best EV battery packs in the world. Under normal conditions, I'd expect them to last for at least 10 years, and more likely 12 - 15. But it still depends a lot on how you treat them. I wouldn't be surprised if a Plaid battery pack lasts for less than 8 years, for example, since many people are using those cars as (essentially) drag racers. Which results in very rapid battery discharge and that's got to have a serious negative effect on the battery pack's lifespan.

Car engines have the same issues. As a number of companies have found, rebuilding battery packs can be done quite economically as batteries are often killed by single cell failures. Replace the single open circuit cell and you are back on line.

The batteries don't need replacing. At least Tesla's don't. GM is having some issues but a Tesla can go a lot longer than the average life span of an ICE vehicle before you need a new motor or battery. You are more likely to wreck the car than need to replace a battery. We will see how the Rivian's hold up.

Batteries, in theory, should outlast the cars frame. Lemons will happen, but the cycles wise they should last quite a while. The cost sucks, I agree. I want an EV so bad but can't afford it right now. Also a big plus, recycling lithium ion batteries is supposedly cheaper than mining new resources, and plants are being opened to do this. If the manufacturers and the recycling plants can contract and work together, it'd help reduce the need for the unethical mines. Now we just need faster green energy development, at least in the US.

Everyone saying “$70k is a lot.” Yes it is, but that’s how a lot of auto startups get their footing. It’s the same thing Tesla did, don’t forget. Tesla’s used to cost over $100k. Now they have them for $35k. Rivian will be available to the masses as the company gains momentum and the technology becomes more available

These are excellent and I am so impressed with everything Rivian is doing. And I believe that the competition many are worried about shouldn't be a problem, since there are more customers for excellent EVs than all of the manufacturers can fulfill the needs of and healthy competition is good.

Not worried, but as a Mercedes fanboy I am still very much impressed. Somehow their first vehicle is damn near perfect for its intended purpose while they are also less controversial than Tesla. I hope the EQG Mercedes is working on will make equally good use of the electric engines as the Rivian does. Atm it’s the best off-road ev on the market and honestly by now we can already forget about the cybertruck lol.

Sorry Scotty but you can have the best design in the world but if you can't build them in the millions because you don't have the necessary infrastructure , your just dreaming. It takes years of dedicated effort to hire and train enough personnel to develop and manufacture vehicles in the millions and astronomical funding during the process. Tesla on the other hand in spite of problems and growing pains , is a world leader with the capacity to deliver millions of vehicles this year. The Tesla brand is also evolving technologically as it must with new battery technology . I believe they are so far ahead with real world experience that all the others are finding it difficult to catchup.

"...deliver millions of vehicles this year." Not quite. They'll still be at under 1 million vehicles delivered in 2021. That's still more BEV than any other car company in the world. I think that there are over 1 million reservations for the CyberTruck, but they haven't delivered any, and probably won't deliver any next year, and very probably not the next year either.

I'm all for this technology. Same as I am wind a solar. But the price is going to hurt sales cuz most of us won't spend that kind of money for a vehicle. Great job guys and gals.

What do you do with it when the battery life expires and will no longer charge? Are they going to be disposable or will the battery be affordable and less than a new car? Are they still powered by fossil fuels to charge them on an average city grid and a huge hole in the ground like a coal mine to make the batteries?

@@vitsadelhole they are, but only so much. The entire battery isn't, and they still have to keep mining lithium, even then. Yeah, don't drill for oil, because it's bad for the environment, but it's ok to dig huge strip mine pits. Makes a lot of sense. It's been shown that the building, and using an electric car is at least as polluting as a gas powered car, these days. Gas powered cars are 1% of what they used to be, with all of the emissions controls. If everyone had an electric vehicle, the power grid could not handle it. Major upgrades are needed.

I love everything about these vehicles. I am concerned about the accuracy of the range. Recently, the EDVs were shown to fall far short of the stated range if any accessories were running. Are they ever not??? It's unclear to the extent this applies to the R1T and R1S. I did read that the R1T hit its mark in an independent test, but that was in full economy mode and such. My gas cars have typically exceeded their EPA ratings with full AC or heat running and loaded up going 75-80 mph. Seems the opposite might be true for these EVs. Thoughts?

Modern regulations require cars to list mixed driving stats because of numbers manipulations in the past. Think Hyundai and how they got busted early 2010's. So if you are highway driving, you'll surpass that mixed driving number. I've had 3 cars since I started driving, and 2 were less than advertised, and my current Sonata was as advertised until around 100k miles. Also, I'm not sure I've seen a company NOT manipulate numbers to embellish their product for sales. It doesn't make it right, but whether it's weight, questionable mpg numbers, hp, etc.

Scotty just wondering what you think the ongoing cost of ownership will look like in terms of repairs? The modular platform design looks like swapping modules would make it easier so I think that would mean you could own one for a long time, like the old man's shovel that's had five handles and two heads. I saw it and I wanted one, do they plan to make a RHD version?

The cost for switching our modules is not cheap and you have to swap them often from what I hear
