I asked some Canadian students what Serbian sounds like to them. I started by playing them the audio from the a of a Serbian TV show. Then I asked them to guess which language was in the sample played to them. After a few guesses I gave them visual clues from the video so they could see the script and ethnicity of the people in the sample video.
Most of them thought it was one of the romance languages, like Spanish or Italian. In fact, I also thought the first few seconds of the clip sounded like a romance language.
Finally, I asked them to imitate what they have heard for native Serbian speakers to hear what their language sounds like to foreigners. This segment took some convincing because the subjects did not want to offend anyone or seem racist. Therefore please do not blame them if you are offended, I asked them to do it and most of them did it reluctantly.
I used "Miljana Gavrilović - Tačno 9 (4.3.2014)" as the sample.

I don't think he meant geographically but as a language group, which is Slavic for all of them. So, in comparison to answers like "Spanish", it was close. I'm Slavic as well and if they would hear my language as Russian I'd tell them they're close eventhough I'm Sovenian, (and Slovenia is quite far from Russia).

My English speaking friends are usually telling that our language (Serbian) sounds somewhat harsh and that it's nothing like comparably soft and mellodic Russian; plenty of regular everyday words are quite challenging for them to pronounce - it's always fun to listen them struggling with their tongues :) They also think that Serbs tend to speak a bit too loudly :)

1:42 that girl said "veći prostor" perfectly! Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian is almost identical and not an easy language to learn. Partially because of certain sounds that we use like Ć, Đ, Ž and most vicious of them all sound "Lj". On top of that, grammar is full of exceptions. The only easy part of our language is writing - it is without any exceptions and each character bears same sound regardless of it's position in the word. Also, combination of characters do not affect sound of the character as it is typical for almost all Western spelling.

@Porkeater2610957
@Porkeater2610957 8 жыл бұрын
Not even as dialects. There are several dialects within Serbian language, yet it is probably the most homogenous language in Europe. The dialects have nothing to do with quasi-ethnic borders of former Yugoslavia. For example, the "East Herzegovinian" dialect, which is the foundation of Serbian language (Just as the Moscovian dialect is for example, the foundation of Russian language) is found in Herzegovina, Eastern Bosnia, Semberija, entire Krajina, Machva, Western Serbia and most of Montenegro. Serbian language is spoken by over 20 million people. The foundations and rules of the modern Serbian language have been formed by Vuk Karadzich, and the "Croatian" and "Bosniak", so-called "languages" are merely a political division of the Serbian language, and have nothing to do with linguistics. It is their own schizofrenia and personality disorder that they will claim they speak a completely different language, just because they hate Serbs so much, and the fact that they too are Serbs and speak Serbian. A unique situation in the World. You don't see the Irish of Americans or Australians call English language "Irish", "Australian" or "American", don't you?

Heritage Inmoshun Are these students studying linguistics? Some of them came pretty close by saying that it's Polish or Slovak, because Serbian is directly connected with Polish and the Czech and the Slovak language, while it's indirectly connected with Russian. All in all, it's a great and interesting video.
@pokojnitoza1190

schmucker1989 Well, Serbian is not any closer to Polish, Czech or Slovak than it is to Russian. If you consider a linguistic division, Serbian (IMHO more properly Serbo-Croatian or Croat-Serbian, whereas Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, Montenegrin are rather political categories) is Southern Slavic language, together with Slovenian, Macedonian and Bulgarian. On the other hand, if you would like to know who do we understand better of those listed above, my impression is - Russian, then Slovak, then Polish and then Czech (for Czech I'm quite certain that it is the most difficult to catch).

I know because I *don't* speak Russian and I can understand only bits of it, yet I can understand Italian from knowledge of Spanish and French. If they were as similar as you say, I would've understood at least over half of it. The one language actually very very similar to Serb-Croat is Macedonian. Marija Grujicic Sto odmah vredjas kada se neko ne slaze sa tobom? To sto ti govoris Ruski je lepo, i sto je tebi slican i to je lepo. Ali vredjanje zbog toga sto nekome je to potpuno razlicit jezik? Koliko imas godina? 12? Potpuno se slazem sa Sonjom, mozda svaku petu rec uhvatim da razumem od Ruskog. Za mene je to potpuno stran jezik, a verujem da je i za mnoge. 100 ljudi 100 cudi i malo vise tolerancije.

Marija Grujicic I speak Russian and it's nothing like Serbian. You can understand some words but it's not even close. Grammar, words... Serbian has same words as Russian? Maybe some similar, very few of them with the same meaning even if similiar. And if she isn't good with languages, that doesn't mean she should be a waitress... Maybe she is good in math, and she shits on your language knowledge? Chill out. I wouldn't find it correct if he tried to speak it as Russian. So what? You wanna say that you are the only Serbian person who speaks Russian and is good with languages and that only your opinnion counts?

Hi, greetings from Serbia! Thank you for making me laugh, I didn't expect that this will happen. I was surprised that somebody used a video of TV show where I was a guest, since there are many other videos available on the web. Thank you once again, it was very amusing to hear foreigns repeating my words because our language is very specific for pronunciation. :) Salute!

Our language, especially letters and stuff, was modified from old Russian, so yeah, you wouldn't be wrong if you are imitating Serbian like Russian. :) It was modified a lot tho, the most things that got hit was grammar, some new letters were introduced and the rule that I think not even one language in the World has that's one letter on Serbian represents one short pronunciation, which means you don't pronounce letters in words so they sound like two letter parts but each letter is singularly sounding. Example of multi letter pronunciations in English: "A" is pronounced as "EY", or "B" letter sounds like: "Bee", well in our language there aren't any letters that sounds like any multi-letter words. They are like chopped off sort of speaking. Also grammar is very complex, one of the most complex grammars in the World, it's one of the hardest languages to learn along with Chinese for example. It's because we change our words accordingly to many stuff, in sentences... We have something that exists in German for example, which is "gender" of words, so if word is kinda "womanish" then we add some letter(s) to it, and if it's "man-ish" then some other letter(s), and if it belongs to "it" sort of speaking group, then some other letter(s) are added, that rule especially counts for verbs which then you can use without subject in sentence and it's understandable who is doing the thing that is explained by the sentence (it's not needed to say "he", "she" or "it" like in English or some other languages; it's enough to say like: "The car was washed" on Serbian, the verb "washed" can be modified in 3 ways so we know exactly if it was female, male or "it" person who washed it [if that's known], otherwise we say in general that "the car have been washed"). In German you have "die, der and das" for nouns. :) The other things about grammar is that there are a lot of rules and some exceptions... I'm glad that I've been born here, because this language makes us kind of unique and it's natural for us. :) Proud to be Serbian!

How can they say Spanish or Italian? I mean, have they not heard Italian/Spanish in their lives before?? I'm sorry, but I honestly can't believe someone can be so uneducated. I am Serbian, and there are a lot of languages out there that I am not familiar with, but I'd never ever confuse them with such well-known languages as those two are. I mean, people, come on. You don't have to speak a language in order to recognize it. I don't speak Chinese for example, but I'd always recognize it. Same goes for almost all European languages, Japanese and Korean. Inform yourself, people. It's high time you did that, really.
