I took Herman the Oliver 1950 out to knock down some ruts and help speed up the drying process for some muck ground. It didn't go so well.

Doesn’t matter what tractor you have they all get stuck. The bigger the tractor the bigger they’re stuck too. Always a pain when you have to unhook what you’re pulling to get out. But when you’re by yourself I’ve used a cedar rail underneath the tractor and chained to the rear wheels. Works good. But you have to take it slow.

As a trucker of 25 years I am also impressed with your backing skills with 2 attachments on the back of your 2nd tractor. Love the roar Herman's Detroit makes when you have it up-to working rpm's. Reminds me of an old Mack sidewinder that I learned to drive a truck as the owner of the truck replaced the old mack engine with an old Detroit. Enjoyed the video.

Not always. Big tires float good, but once they sink they are much much worse. Wider the tire the more area you are trying to get back up on top of the ground and more area to dig out. A narrow tire doesn't float well but doesn't get stuck near as easy. Not to mention the suction the mud has is much greater on a wider tire.

At least you had the option of hydraulic lift. When I was a kid dissing on a JD 530 our drag disk only had manual angle adjustment. In the creek bottoms we worked you really had to keep a look at the dirt and keep a long chain to pull the disk out.

Fun video. Reminds me when I got my MF Super 90 stuck. We didn't have anything around that could free it since it was sitting in the mud solid on the engine and transmission. Had to pay a guy $150 to dig it out with a shovel and then use a Ford 3000 and my RAM 1500 4WD to pull it out. But I have a question about your Oliver and that Jimmy engine. How does the fuel burn on that 2 stroke Jimmy compare to a comparable horsepower tractor with a 4 stroke diesel? I have several old 2 stroke street motorcycles and I love them, but they do suffer a might on fuel economy.
@ThatOliverGuyChris4 жыл бұрын
From what I understand thry aren't quite as efficient since the exhaust valves are still open when fuel injection starts, so some fuel exits with the exhaust and doesn't get burned.

Reminds me of the time my uncle, after finishing moldboard plowing, decided to run the tractor and plow over an area where a sewer line was installed over the winter. He found an air pocket, and buried the Deere 4240. Took both our 4020 and 2750 to pull it out, then had to turn around and go back over the same spot to get out of that area. We found three air pockets that year, two with the 4240, and one with a loaded wagon of corn silage..........

Good question. The peat seemed fairly solid underneath, tall narrow tires might have bit in and gone through, but peat probably isn't that solid... Back in my younger mud boggin days the trucks that got stuck the worst were the ones with the most aggressive tread. They'd dig down too fast. Once you get pushing that wall of mud ahead of the tires, things go downhill fast. Somewhere is a Vhs tape of a $300 Escort that went places some of the mud trucks wouldn't. Speed conquers all!

No offense meant but, Herman really needs new "shoes" on the fronts. No tread, no traction and add the fact, you're fighting mud. Hate to say this but, you might want to think about getting drain tile added in that area of the field. Otherwise, Herman is going to be a bit upset with you that you got him stuck twice!! Hahahaha. Now, you gotta give him a bath. As always, great video Chris. Cheers :)

Aaron has a good point. There is a natural gas pipeline a couple miles down the road that goes through muck. A few years ago during a dry summer the land owner was out brush hogging and he hit something. It was concrete, and it turned out to be a weight they put on those pipelines to keep them down. Even with that concrete, it still had 'floated' its way to being exposed. The poor guy running the brush hog must have had a heart attack when he realized what he had hit. I bet drain tile would migrate over time and stop working in soil like that.
