I've got a JD-4/16 plow that I use to use with my 1850. When I first got it, my heavy clay ground would have spots where the ground was so hard it would actually push the plow up out of the ground. Then I put new plow points on and I quit having that problem. The first time I dropped the plow in, it was the first time I saw Ollie grunt and work hard. The black smoke rolled and the dirt started rolling over. I was dropping it in as far as it would go and I was amazed at the job it was doing. I was originally thinking that the ground was so hard from years of no-till farming that it was basically ruined. I understand why they do no-till, but I prefer to roll the ground over and try to get some of the previous crop residue (corn stalks, bean stubble) in the ground to hopefully loosen up the clay a little eventually. The guy that has been farming my place just discs it a little and then plants it. If I ever get a tractor so I can farm it myself again, I will be plowing it again. Unfortunately, the clutch disk on Ollie decided to grow fast to the flywheel and you can't disengage the clutch. I can't find anyone to work on it, and I sure as heck won't try doing it myself. (no shop) Another interesting video, thank you.

John Deere plow will definitely work a tractor more than an Oliver or IH plow. An 1850 would probably pull a 5-16 Oliver or IH plow okay even in your heavy clay. Although I do tend to downsize plows for better results in our clay. We took the 5th bottom off of our IH 700 5-16 to make it 4-16 and it pulls a whole lot better behind our 4020’s.

We wish we could be smelling the freshly turned soil. The sound of that, as a customer called them "Walk-In-Shade" engine is also great. We had customers who used the 18" shares on 16" bottoms. As I have said before, farmers around here think of plowing as an archaic thing their granddad did. Your Dad taught you well how to make a plow work at its best. Hard plowing contest we had one time. We put a pad of paper and a pen, on the parts counter and had customers write about how hard their ground plowed. A couple of oil filters were the prize. The winner had muck ground down around Buckskin, IN. He said his ground plowed so hard that he would stop the tractor, have a lazy lunch, and then get back on the tractor about the time the plow caught up to it.

No doubt in my mind that a 70hp with 4wd traction Oliver tractor would pull 5 bottoms plow. But it mostly depend on the kind of soil it's been done. A sandy soil don't have the same resistance as a heavy clay soil. Especially if that clay is a bit too dry. Compaction level is also highly to consider. Even a MF135 can pull up to three bottoms in a sandy soil. It suddenly goes down to two bottoms in clay soil. That 1655 tractor was built like a tank. Let's see if today's tractors will still run in 40 years ! Respect for keeping that legendary tractor in such a good shape. Looks like it's been recently out of the manufacture.

We often put on the next size up share on our IH plows so it hung out some and would help cut alfalfa roots for the next bottom so everything turned over clean. We used both IH and White's at the same time, and while I did like the White's and they were built heavier, I thought their auto reset was less smooth at work than IH's setup.
@ThatOliverGuyChris5 ай бұрын
With the sand in our area it was common practice to run 16 inch bottoms on an 18 inch cut. Saved the farmer a few bucks in steel. But I know exactly what you are talking about. I had a large patch of burdock in a field, so I went in there with my 588 plow and turned them under. I ended up with rows of burdock every 16 inches because of the gap between the bottoms not slicing those tap roots off.

Well Chris, you could've gone just a tad bit deeper. I respect your decision on not doing weights and ballast on the tractor. My old JD3010D, for my ground, hard clay, black soil, it pulled a 4 -16" and would be at the 10" to 11" mark. Or course it was basically a 3020 since it's overhaul but, even in the hard ground, it didn't care and yes, you could hear it start to pull hard but, never wavered, pulled through it with ease and it was 2wd. These old tractors and equipment, I'd be farming with them over today's stuff. Just so much more simplified and way easier to work on. The main thing is, as long as you're having fun and it's working properly, go have your fun, enjoy the old girl. I love seeing these old machines still farming today. To me, it just brings back a lot of childhood memories. I'll say that when we finished plowing, would let the fields sit for a week or two, then go in with a chisel plow since we didn't have a deep ripper, we'd use the chisel plow to go deeper than the moldboard plow to break up the sheared cut they do. Great video as always, cheers :)

And I'm by no means an expert on plowing but I did notice what appears to be that your plow was plow with the landside leaning closer to the ground. Now I'm not trying to start anything but I'm more so looking/ mentioning it cause everyone does stuff differently and maybe you have a reason for that. Or maybe what I'm seeing is an illusion or maybe it's cause you have it set for a totally different tractor. I was always thought that you want it to cut as level as possible. I do also realize that you are doing this for fun and you probably didnt take time to adjust the setup.Any response or information is appreciated. Thanks for the great video keep up the great work.

You're right, they need to run as level as possible. Overall I thought it was running level, but there were a couple times I had the tail wheel low. I get that problem at olow days. You follow one guy that is okowing shallow and it is leaning to the left. Next round you're behind the guy that's digging to China, and it leans to the right. It was definitely staying more consistent after i replaced the shares, but most of the video was before that.
@B_richards92205 ай бұрын
@ThatOliverGuyChris I definitely know what you mean about plow days. And I do very much agree that after you did replace the shares it did do a much better job of staying level. That bit of wheel slip in a couple hard spots kept the engine from lugging down to low so it probably made it better, no gear shifting! LOL

Yep. I've had my roll over plow on this tractor and it's a little light on the front when the plow is in the air. I put it on my American 80 and was heading back to the barn to put on the front weights. It could lift it fine, but without the extra weight of the FWA, I was getting to see more of the sky than I wanted. Lol

My brother and I were at the Indiana Tuggers Antique Tractor pull. A guy JD 720 Gas got beat by an Oliver Super 88 Gas with worn old paint. After the pull he muttered "Those damn Olivers were made for pulling!" His JD was all tricked out with high end clear coat paint, chrome everywhere etc.He didn't even stay for the next round! The Oliver guy spent all his money on mechanics and skill. He watched every puller before him and read the track expertly too! Not saying the JD are bad tractors just the Olivers were better!

Pulled 5-16s for years with a 1650. If I remember 3rd direct was it's favorite

There’s just something about plowing that’s mesmerizing to me. It’s therapeutic I guess.

I end up with a stiff neck because I spend most of the time watching it roll over, making minor adjustments. It's definitely a good way to clear the mind.

That engine is just about perfect. It is turning all the fuel into work. No smoke at all and you were up against governor when you spun out . Did you get it to smoke on the dyno?
@ThatOliverGuyChris4 ай бұрын
Sorry for the slow reply, KZbin held your comment for some stupid reason. If you pull it down below rated speed it will make some smoke. I ran it on the grain vac last year and that was all it wanted. There's a video on here of it doing that.

The plow even buries the trash well for not having cover boards.

No dry rot in those tires either. BFGoodrich, what number? NLA?
@ThatOliverGuyChris5 ай бұрын
They're a BF Goodrich Power Radial 80. They haven't been available for some time now, but if you find a source I'd be in the market

My dad bought cheap plow shears at auctions so we were running 16 and 18" on 14" bottoms. I never checked myself but supposedly, Agco recently discontinued the plow parts
@ThatOliverGuyChris5 ай бұрын
I'll look into that.

I just checked for shares for 619 series bottoms, everything came up "call dealer" which is Agco speak for no longer available. That stinks

@ThatOliverGuyChris yea. The fun of having old toys. I still have a decent aftermarket source because White Horse machine builds plows for the Amish and they still use Oliver bottoms. They build the frogs themselves, but all the other parts are available aftermarket.

We pulled 3 16 in bottom plows with a 1550 oliver 30 year ago in heavy clay soil, sometimes they would bring frontend off the ground

I have the draft control diabled on this one, so it didn't pull up.

Nothing can touch the smell of fresh turned dirt and diesel smoke. I loved that smell as a younger man working on a local farm.

Hi Chris. I got a 4-16s 508 this spring. I put new points and shins on it and it did ok plowing sod but in corn stalks it was terrible. Anyhow after an incident where I almost snapped the ear off the pull bar I switched to my IH 710 4-18s and it worked better then ever, my problem with it was the rear tires not being set wide enough. Now to my question, when I took the pull bar off the 508 I set it in the position for moderate plowing. Is that where your plow is set too?
@ThatOliverGuyChris5 ай бұрын
I have the bar set with the hitch pins on the underside, so they are below bar. What was your 508 doing to keep it from plowing stalks?
@burrridgefarms5 ай бұрын
Well it would plow too deep on the front bottoms, and it would ball up with stalks between the second and third bottoms. Really it seems like the dang thing doesn't run level compared to the 710🤷♂️
@ThatOliverGuyChris5 ай бұрын
@@burrridgefarms if you're having trouble keeping the rear of the plow in the ground, you want to get it to where the hitch pins are below the cross bar. Check out this video for what I'm talking about. kzbin.infok1UuNyI8LUQ?si=oxrUcy3oghJrmGE8 The 508 should have the box beam hitch, so it probably doesn't have the adjustment to move the post down like in the video I linked to. A lot of guys mistakenly try moving the hitch points up thinking it will let them lower the plow farther, but that changes the center of draft and wants to tip the plow forward, pulling up on the back of the plow. It's better to adjust the links on the tractor to get the front of the plow down, if needed.

Wow great plowing vid! The 1655 was a good match for that in those conditions!
