This is the most no-nonsense explanation of hernias and how they affect lifters that I’ve yet to find. So many videos are filled with bro-science which isn’t rooted in any evidence. I just has bilateral inguinal hernia repair as well as an umbilical hernia repair all at the same time. Everything Mark says here tracks with the information and advice given to me by my surgeon. Thank you for sharing this resource!

How are you feeling now ? Any tips for recovery . Plan on getting mine fixed soon .
@jmarder
@jmarder 2 ай бұрын
Thank you for asking. It’s been a tricky recovery. Surgeon said I was fine to return to all activities after 6 weeks, but I don’t think he understood the physical demands of Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai. Long story short, I think I overexerted around week 18 and aggravated the area. Tests and physical exams showed no recurrence and the repair was solid and intact. For peace of mind, I decided to back off for a while and focus on very light strength training, mobility, flexibility, and core work, gradually ramping up the intensity until my body is ready for the demands of Jiu Jitsu again.

@@jmarder Gotcha ! Well i hope you feel better and can get back to it 100% those combat sports are extremely physically demanding. In terms of just daily life and simple running every thing seems fine right ?
@jmarder
@jmarder 2 ай бұрын
@@7JT7Thank you, much appreciated! Everyday life is pretty much fine other than the anxiety over having possibly damaged the repair, but several exams and tests confirmed that all was healing extremely well. I’m going to continue focusing on mobility and flexibility, which seem to help a lot. If I had to do it all over again, I would’ve begun working with a personal trainer from a couple weeks into recovery in order to fully prepare my body. However, after a brief conversation with my surgeon today, I’m hopeful about finding a solid path forward which addresses the discomfort. Honestly, it’s not too bad. It just give me some anxiety that something could be wrong.

It’s semantic play to say “deadlifting does not cause hernias” when heavy lifting or any activity that puts pressure on the abdominal wall can bring to fruition the congenital risk of developing a hernia or manifest an existing hernia as an overtly problematic one. If a person could’ve gone their entire lives without knowing about a hernia but deadlifting made them have to face it head-on as a nuisance, for all practical purposes, that is equivalent to deadlifting causing their hernia.
@starpooper1681

Your response is a semantic play. If your statement was true then all deadlifters would have hernias. And they do not, including yours truly.

Yeah I don't really understand why everyone touts the 'birth defect' thing - if I had it since birth I had zero symptoms for 36 years and then all of a sudden I get symptoms? that does not sound like a birth defect but a tear/trauma to the region

My hernia was triggered by a coughing fit during a particularly nasty cold. I got it repaired, waited a few month to make sure it was fully healed (at the suggestion of somone who didn't wait) and then began doing Starting Strength, including all the deadlifts. Haven't had any complications, unless you count the gym being closed temporarily because of the pandemic.

I had a inguinal hernia repair about a year ago and have been doin starting strength about 4m and my deadlift is at 305 x 5 and squat at 255 3 x 5. It does worry me from time to time that I might be pushing myself too far too soon, I do feel it after heavy sets from time to time and has caused me to pull back on pushing myself as hard as I could.

I actually never knew I had one, it showed up on a full body PET scan. It's absolutely genetic as my brother had one and my grandfather was said to have one but found post mortem. Since finding out about mine I've continued to squat and deadlift with no issues. It never hurt and doesn't feel larger. Should I wait til it's a problem or just forget about it? I'm not afraid of the pain or surgery, I've been through far worse. What I wouldn't like is the down time and subsequent loss of strength etc.

Great video, it helped me understand things. I got my groin hernia while deadlifting (21 years old), maybe went too hard, but knowing that it's not from deadlift but genetic is great to know. Haven't got bilateral surgery, but i hope i'll be able to train again without developing hernia on the other side, i'm waiting 8 week post op before retaking light bodyweight exercice. Is it possible to train to reinforce the muscle around to lower the risk ? Best regards

Got a hernia while deadlifting heavy back in 2011. Not the fault of deadlifting, my dad has had 2 and every man in my family has. However I did not have surgery. I slept without a pillow with my legs elevated. Drank aloe vera juice everyday and took the supplement called Hawthornia. I also stopped squats and deadlifts for about 6 months. I leg pressed instead. I don't know if it healed or what but my hernia is gone and I'm deadlifting and squatting over 500 weekly and feel nothing.

Whats the best way to brace on squats and deadlifts on a hernia? I've lifted for years with one and had no pain. Its on the top of the stomach and the doctor says it seems reducible and probably won't need surgery. Also have another one i noticed recently on the lower side of the abdomen. I'm not getting pain on either, but I'm noticing some sensations, for lack of a better word. I've been told to take lifting easy for a few weeks. But how do I lift after this? Should I just wear a belt super tight to hold thing in and not brace too hard? I'm aware they won't go away on their own and might get bigger over time. So i am thinking about gettinf then repaired anyway, but just wondering about guidance on lifting until then.

The deadlift is probably the safest thing you can do for your back. People snap their backs more often from sneezing than they do deadlifting. And this is coming from someone who's snapped his back twice doing them. I know it was faulty technichue and other such errors that were the problem, not the deadlift. It can happen. Just like everything else in life, it can go wrong. But then what. You just stop doing shit? Just walk it off, suck it up and hope for better luck next time. If deadlift was so damn dangerous, you wouldn't see anyone anywhere pulling more than 100 kg off the ground. And there are people pulling well over 500 kg.

He's saying that the underlying cause is a pre-existing genetic weakness, but that an exercise like a deadlift can cause the hernia to manifest. There's probably something to that; I first felt my hernia squatting down to work on something on the floor. No weight involved.
