My Father was from Hessle Road and all my family came from Hull, I have not been back for years, indeed the Hull I know, is the Hull from the 1960s and 70s. It breaks my heart when I hear of the problems in Hull now, but no matter were I go, I'll always be a child from 'Ull

I love this song and the pictures, I lived on Constable Street until 1954. Now I live in Arizona , but I will always be a Hullean. I will never forget the smell off the fish docks in the Summer and going into Boyes to shop, or dancing at the Fishermans Bethel on Saturday nights, I had my first Shandy, at the Criterion, fish and chips on the way home from the Langham, and my sister was married at St Barnabus Church at the corner of the Boulevarde and Hessle Road.

Your Dad was a great man who made a lot of people very happy with his songs. Played his record at my 21st in 1977 and it brought the house down. Hats off to him!

So good to hear this. Alas I am too young to remember Hessle Road in its prime but brought back fond memories of my Grandparents particularly in the early 1970's. Coming vividly into my mind is Cotton's corner shop on Albermarle Street, Boulevard. Thank you.

I drive up to hessle road twice a week from wales in a artic wagon. I like the place, I often go for a walk and talk to local people. Nice people, the locals, not sure about the Eastern Europeans though.

Yes, Little Lass From Eastbourne Street was the original B-side, also written by Pete Smith. Again three chords but a sad country-style ballad in three-time. Wonderful.

I am a Hessle Roader, William Street was the last address before being evacuated, other streets, Waverly, Alfred, Villa Place, Bean St, going to school down Vauxhall Grove, the block of flats I knew as Porter street flats, the one that seems to stand out most, I think it was Ropery st, because most times we would head for there when the Air raid sirens went off because we went down into what must have been a beer cellar, a big arched place painted white, and if we had time we took drinks sandwiches blankets and maybe a pillow, always came out hoping our house was still there.

@emsie76 Thanks for your comment. I know there is a verse missed out, (the one with references to Eton and Harrow). This was done for reasons of timing. The lyric was transcribed from a very scratchy original EP, so I might have misheard something. I would appreciate it if you could let me know of any errors. Thanks again - Dave

Dave Williams as I read your comment I suddenly thought'yes you are right, there is a verse missing (not talking about the original, don't even think I heard the original) something along the lines of 'i remember working on a ship serving cocktails and eating fancy nosh, one bloke said I'm from eaton and i said well I'm blowed I'm from harrow that's a street on hessle rd..'

@isabobbles Beg your pardon isabobbles. Yes your father is the only writer of this song. My mistake. My father was part of the original, also helping your dad to perfect it. (hence only one name to the writer.- Pete Smith) My dad corrected me on my mistake. Also told me many a story of their gigs and how much of a fab guy your father was. ;)

Chord-wise. I just managed to play A, D and E for the Hessle Road song and it sounds OK. Little Lass From Eastbourne Street seems to work for C, F and G (in 3 time). So it seems I, IV and V work for both songs. Apologies if I'm tone deaf here!
