This was so cozy. It is inspiring to see how a fellow introvert navigates solo excursions, impromptu interactions, and how taking it slow, having a loose itinerary allows the place to open up to you. I'm glad you got in and out before the ice storm showed up and everything ground to a halt for a week! Also in the middle of the storm, the Red Line had a planned shutdown due to construction at one of the major stations. So you would have had to take two rail replacement busses to get to the airport.
@lorensims48469 ай бұрын
Ah, the scenery takes me back. My wife and I lived in Gresham, about two blocks from the Max light rail station. We were there for about six months in the mid-'90s. Portland is an amazing town! The people are… different. But generally really quite nice. I'm glad you included a shot of Portland bubblers. They're historical and famous. The buses and light rail are great ways to get around. I had to laugh when you said the place was "right across the bridge" because of all the bridges in Portland, one of my favorite features. In Gresham, they had a great rails-to-trails nature trail along the edge of the park behind the Max station. We took a day trip up to see Seattle but really didn't get a feel for it. I really appreciate your thoughts about Portland in contrast with Seattle. I thought the TV series Portlandia really hit the nail on the head, but they did project a certain pretentiousness that was funny, but not particularly accurate. Public TV in Portland was something special when we were there, too. As I think of the place, there's a different story every couple of blocks. It's just such a rich culture. I worked for a few months at the Goodwill store in Gresham which used to be a K-Mart. After that, I almost got a job at Powell's Technical Books, but it was about then that we decided it was time to move on.

It's so weird to see a video of my home town but im glad you like it. My mother is buried in lone fir and you walked by her grave in the video, lol. The history, in regard to mental health patients, is pretty interesting. A very kind doctor buried his patients there when their families didn't claim them. And as far as the water front park is concerned, it's not in a nighborhood so that's probably why there isn't a lot of people there compared to the cemetery. However! Downtown in general isn't regarded as "safe". When I was a teenager we avoided it because used needles would be put into the grass upright 😶. Has gotten a lot worse in the last four years for obvious reasons. But I think things are looking up. Getting kinda pricey tho. I laughed when you said Portland was cheaper then what you were use to.

Books with Pictures is a wonderful comic book shop. If you’re looking for places other than bookshops.... there’s the Portland Art Museum, Forest Park (it has 30 miles of hiking trails), Pittock Mansion (a haunted historic home open for tours), the Japanese Garden, the Chinese Garden, Tao of Tea (a tea shop--and next door they have a shop where they sell stuff like loose tea & teapots).... I live on the outskirts of Chicago and we are spoiled with good food and I totally agree that Portland has delicious food! The only downside about Portland and Seattle is that you can't stay overnight in the parking lots at Walmart! My husband and I are avid road trippers and that's how we are able to keep costs down.
