HIGH and MUDDY River Usk Flyfishing on the Mardy Beat near Abergavenny

It was tough going today! The river was very high with near zero visibility and I almost didn't even bother getting the rod out.
This is a gorgeous, varied beat and I will definitely be returning under better conditions. I tried my best with some 4mm and 4.5mm jig streamer style flies. I was thrilled to land one nice wild brown trout right before deciding giving up. The decision to try one final fly before packing it in was well worth it and saved the day!

Lovely fish, man! Most UK rivers open in march for trout but are generally hard going before mid April unless conditions are spot on. The Usk is known for a march brown hatch and probably starts earlier than most. A river I've yet to try! Up here in Lancs, we've had mostly "wonka's chocolate rivers" with just an odd day of nearly ok conditions, but it's still great to make a start. Good to see an American perspective on British rivers 😊👍

Thanks!! I was very surprised to find anything that day. I've really enjoyed the Usk since moving down here in July last year - there are some amazing wild brownies lurking around. I did see a small hatch of March browns the other day with a few fish rising. It was the first time I've seen that this season - the fishing will only get better moving forward! Which rivers do you usually fish up in Lancs?
