The age of consent and maturity is arbitrary and differs in different parts of the world and in each individual. There's no difference between 17 and 18, and not every 17 and 18 yr old are the same. There are 17 yr olds that are more mature than 18 yr olds. When I was 15/16, there were boys in my yr group in school (in the UK) that were 6ft+, had full beards, deep voices, etc. They were pretty much young adults or not far off (of course, others in my yr group were still kids). It's weird seeing people act so shocked by seeing fictional characters of that age come across like adults when it's not that uncommon in our real world.

People keep forgetting that when Mai was de-aged that she reverted mentally as well. So mentally, she was the same as her physical age (this can be see by her behavior). So she's mentally the same age as she is physically, just with her adult memories too. And you know, these people never complain about the numerous anime where a character is someone who was reincarnated but retains or regains the memories of their past life and hooks up with someone their current physical age (it's basically the same thing here). Nor do they have problems with inhuman creatures that are hundreds or thousands of years older than their love interests but physically look young (ex. Sesshomaru and Rin from Inuyasha).

The Obvious issue is precieved differences in mental maturity, which Mai having all of her memories implies she has more much mental maturity than Trunks, which can lead to an unbalanced and bad relationship realistically speaking. A lot of it really depends on if current Mai identifies with her previous adult self as her current self. We have to realize just how far her age regressed, which is considerable like she was regressed back to her formative years. With her brain being regressed so much, her adult memories may as well be from another person because of the huge disconnect from who she was then to who she is now. It's the reverse situation of Aang from ATLA, who is technically 112 but mentally and developmentally, is 12, but we don't view his relationship with Katara as problematic. It's an interesting topic with no real answer, BUT we have to understand if you isolate someone in Mai's position because they were once x age the negative consequences of doing that to someone with a developing brain will occur and honestly make that person's existence an existential nightmare probably more than their adult memories are already doing. If Mai doesn't or isn't able to identify with that adult version of herself and she looks ( Biologically is that age), feels, and thinks like a teenager, then it's neither predatory nor harmful to let them live as one. We have to examine why it is we don't allow older people to form with relationships with underage children. It's because the nature of such a relationship itself will always be predatory with a major power imbalance and will lead to actual harm. Mai's situation doesn't meet that criteria IF she does not identify with her past adult memories and sense of self, which is probably why she has felt emotionally numb but this is just an analysis and speculation from someone who likes difficult topics like this.

Even after turning back into a kid he still acted like his adult self. Future Mai felt like a completely different character, to the point she very well could've been one, I didn't feel like there was much of anything to tie her to Present Mai so it was easier to overlook it in that case. But up to this point in Super, we've only seen Present Mai with the Pilaf gang, which makes the association with who she was before becoming young again much stronger so it's much much harder to ignore. It is a really bizarre plot point, Dragon Ball often has weird, zany stuff in it that touches iffy subjects, but in the og Dragon Ball it usually was able to tip toe around it tastefully without crossing the line into being offensive or grossing you out, in Super whenever they try emulating that classic Toriyama humor, half the time they drop the ball, crossing that line and just make you feel uncomfortable. That's how this stuff with present Mai makes me feel.

I know this might sound like a 'double standard' kind of comment, but the real 'creepy' element of the Mai/Trunks dynamic (I shudder at even calling it a relationship) was when Future Trunks spent almost an entire episode of Dragon Ball Super holding hands and making lovey dovey eyes with Present Mai during the Future Trunks/Zamasu Arc. It was the episode where he told the story of how he and Future Mai met when confronting Black. Remember this was when Mai looked like a young child along with Goten, Trunks and the other 2 Pilaf Gang members so it was REALLY weird to sit through those scenes... Overall, I don't really think too much about what is going on now in the manga. The best way to chalk it up is Mai is an 'old soul' bahahaha it reminds me of that old Disney movie Sky High. When the main villain of the film turned into a baby because of her own weapon malfunction and the main character (the high school age son of the two greatest heroes on the planet) hooks up with the main villain (the archenemy of the heroes who is the same age as her 'boyfriend's' parents but her mind is in a teenage body)...

Didn't Mai see Future Trunks though? When she got rescued, it looked like she was seeing Future Trunks. Could be another reason why when Present Trunks tried to speak to her after, she was ignoring him and still in awe about the "hero" that saved her. Might be an instance where Mai might not gain interest in him until he is of age and starts acting like Future Trunks or at least sharing similar qualities. Where it stands now, it's just a cringy simp phase that Trunks is stuck in with Mai.

And clearly Mai, even in her child form, still acted pretty much as she did as an adult. She didn't become a literal toddler, and Bulma certainly didn't treat her like one from what I remember. 2 reasons I hate this development: one is that it's only Mai getting the spotlight when I feel the whole Pilaf Gang being here and getting into antics would be x10 better than just Mai cradle-robbing. Second is the choice to continue this, when it was a joke in BoG thought nothing of it but since the Future Trunks arc they've taken it seriously and it's just... really weird. For me the Mai and Trunks stuff has always been very distracting lol. They’ve been teasing this since all the way back in Battle of Gods(I believe Mai has blushed from kid Trunks a few times too) and either way we slice it up Mai is a 40-50 year old woman(who’s aware of her real age and retains her adult memories) in a kid’s body. Her demeanor is younger but she’s still self aware. I do feel if we put a guy in Mai’s situation(let’s say Barry Khan) and have him date/tease a relationship with a little girl(maybe Pan or Bulla) people would be more disturbed by it. If I were the writers I’d have just created a new original character for Trunks to be interested in.

I think my big problem with this is that any potential justifications of this, like Mai regressing in maturity along with her body, probably won't be addressed in the manga or anime. I don't think Toriyama and Toyotaro know what red/yellow flags came with this idea when they continue to treat it like it's all in good fun. If they do know, then they might've decided not to address it at all, like a dark truth that would get in the way of the light hearted moments they want. We can come up with all sorts of different ideas on this as fans, but if the characters in universe don't even see it as cause for concern, that's still gonna make me uncomfortable. It's like if a group of friends all saw the same obviously concerning thing happen, but only you realized it was concerning, as if they don't have a moral compass to ring in their head. I find even the maturity regression idea strange from Mai's POV. Sure, I guess that might make the ship ok, but what on earth could that be like for Mai? To have memories of mature thought processes while you're too immature to understand them? That sounds a little like eldritch horror to me, a feint memory of understanding now lost. Each year of maturity gained allowing her to understand more of her past, like she really is Yami from YuGiOh. Just bizarre.

I left a long comment on masakoX's channel and don't feel like retyping it since im on mobile so ill just summarize. I have a theory that when toriyama initially had the pilaf gang made young since all of that happened off screen and weren't shown on screen nothing he really says in an interview is completely concretely canon. So i think because super had all these canon movies that are being worked into the story Toriyama doesn't really have a definitie path for the super story because at this point thw ending of dragon ball z doesn't make sense because they are fighting in interdimensional tournaments so the 3nd of Z from 20 + years ago i don't know how super is going to tie in there. Especially considering the fact that the trunks and goten in the current arc look like how they did at the end of Z the end of Super could be soon but it just seems so random in terms of storytelling. I kinda went on a tanget but basically my original comment was that the wish was more of a restart my life with my knowledge rather than memories kinda like how you have those isekai where the mc mentally regresses to a 5 year old but is still able to cause an economical revolution. So i initially found it creepy but when you watch or read super the pilaf gang seems to have no real memories of their exploits in og dragonball and there is never any meaningful interaction between them and goku and aside from working as engineers for capsule corp they act like regular kids. But then again i have a vague memory of them searching for the dragon balls on the cruise ship in battle of gods. Edit: yeah i looked it up and in the battle of gods arc they were scared of goten cuz they thought he was goku but after that they kinda just act like kids ao maybe it was gradual like it commonly is with the mental regression in isekai series either that or toriyama caught a case of araki forgot. Cuz when mai met future mai and future trunks it didn't read to me like an adult in a kids body because she fell in love with future trunks and it read to me more like a little girl mistaking her feelings of respect towards an older dude for love and then the wiki describes it as when she realized future mai and trunks were together her feelings shifted to regular trunks. So yeah i stick back to my claim that at some point offscreen the sideffect of their wish kicked in. They were treated like a kid for long enough that they mentally regressed in a natural way to the point that they basically became a kid again. Not like the adults with an infantilism kink.

I saw a comment the other day, I don't remember if it was here or on a Geekdom's video, that made a fair point. Mai is bound to never have a normal relation again since every single guy that looks her age that isn't an alien like Granola is bound to be younger than her. Also, I think the Pilaf gang have all their memories intact. It is not estated how bad being young again affects their minds, but it seems they were quite aware of everything even though they were turned into toddlers in some manga thing that explains why they were kids again. It seems that having another chance in live by becoming younger made them re consider things, specially with Bulma's tutelage. Though Pilaf and his obsession with the dragon balls kept dragging them back into the criminal life. On the other hand, Shu and Mai seem pretty ok with their new lives at capsule corp. At this point wishing them back to their actual age would be kinda cruel. This being Toyotaro and Toriyama humor, the most probable Trunks will stay a simp for a while or Mai will dismiss him in some ridiculous way. And if something happens between them, It will be off screen.

I don't care about it I try not to overthink it too much, I have many questions about it though, why would the writers go after this odd choice in the first place? It needs to be explained in depth because I'd hate to imagine this is some kind of hidden fetish the writers have (which could be a thing since many authors disguise their fetishes through their art). In one perspective we have the "mai is having her second chance at life with her mental maturity similar to her body's maturity" And then the "mai never took a step back in terms of maturity and it's creepy" Personally I think mai doesn't even consider trunks as someone mentally younger or less mature and acts mostly like someone of trunk's age range (despite having kept her memories intact apparently) so maybe she truly got reverted back to that age besides the physical aspect which I guess is what makes the most sense out of the other theories and would be the less creepy outcome and logical explanation to the dilemma... But I really hope the writers take notes on this and decide to clear things up and shed some light into the matter

This is the type of conversation that tends to bring out a lot of hypocrisy in my opinion before any real discussion that adds merit can be had. If you go with morality of the situation based on societal expectations, then you ultimately start to label things like this automatically as wrong due to being "gross," which I remind you has been one of civil rights' activists' least favorite justifications from others to paint certain types of relationships as wrong (hope I don't have to go into detail). Basically, wrong because society says "ew" or "gross" or abnormal is not a strong argument for morality in my opinion. There are probably better arguments that can be made about the situation, but it's a fictional scenario that can't happen in real life. We're talking about world where a dog is literal king of the world for crying out loud. What are the moral implications of the way animals and other dogs are treated in such a world?? I'm not giving any stance on such a hypothetical scenario, but if anyone tries to talk about it or goes against what appears to be a societal norm, especially since in legal terms (them both physically being minors), the conversation often gets pushed to one direction, and people asking questions vilified. 🤔 And it often becomes just as easy of a justification when someone says this case is different and can't be compared to "legitimate" types of relationships. Look, I'm not here to justify unacceptable relationships with minors (absolutely not), but hear me out. The reason for the number 18 is because in my understanding, it is a number a lot of the world has deemed acceptable due to a person most likely to be mentally mature enough for an adult relationship. However, in history, cultures have often deemed this case to be earlier. In Jewish culture, you are/were considered an adult man by 13 (correct me if I am wrong on that though) for example. I argue though that the age indicates that the mental maturity of the person is probably most important. I would have less problem with a mature 18 year old being in an adult relationship than an immature 20 year old being in a relationship for example. Basically, to add to the conversation, Mai being mentally older may not may problematic necessarily because her physical age is now the same as Trunks, but we see Trunks literally in a pretty immature phase to be honest. He's probably more filled with hormones than legit understanding of Mai herself. His mental age gap with Mai could be a problem if Mai for example tried to take advantage of his ignorance and young hormones for exploitation (which is where most of the legit arguments come from against such a relationship), but so far, we've only really seen Trunks' one-sided crush. Mai being a bit enamored by a regal or heroic man could literally just be something she's always been into, and even if so, is there a problem for feeling something without necessarily acting on it? Heck, even back in Dragon Ball, she considered Bulma to be the perverted one even though she was younger. Unless something fundamental has changed in Mai, I don't see her being the type to be so emotionally exploitative despite her past villainy. Keep in mind that by my logic, I also don't really agree with unrestricted teenage relationships in most cases either. Having been a teenager myself, I've seen this all the time. Both being a teenager doesn't magically mean you're mentally mature enough for a serious relationship either. Rarer cases exist where high school romances have translated into healthy life-long relationships. I have seen some old high school friends marry their high school sweetheart. I personally know those people to be more emotionally independent though. Basically, I don't know if it is okay (morally) for Trunks and Mai to be a couple at this age, but I know relationships between even those with large physical age can and have worked, on equal footing. Less likely, but they can. Trunks shouldn't really be in a serious relationship at his age and mental age in my opinion anyway, and Mai likely shouldn't because of her physical age anyway (assuming we use the same standards as our world). However, Trunks' one-sided, hormonal young teenage feelings based on Mai's appearance or general demeanor (or whatever he sees in her) or even Mai's feelings toward certain guys (maybe also influenced by teenage hormones?) are not necessarily wrong in my opinion. The feelings. This would be a problem if Mai as a more mentally mature person exploited a young Trunks for some kind of perverted or malicious gratification and started pursuing Trunks at this stage. It's hard to say as high school students, but I don't think they should.

He also forgot that Saiyans have Tails, that's why Goten and Trunks didn't have their Tails and it also didn't grow back. In the Original Dragon Ball , Goku lost his tail twice and it grew back twice until he permanently removed in his adulthood which stopped growing. In the Saiyan Saga after Vegeta has cut off Gohan's tail , it never grew back. You can argue that Vegeta never grew his tail back after the battle on earth and the reason for that Vegeta was already grown up man when he lost his tail but Gohan was still a child and his Tails could have been grown back in the Android Saga but it didn't. And in Buu Saga despite Goten and Trunks not having their Tails , they should atleast be acknowledged that they can grow a tail or feel it growing it back but that didn't happen. In Dragon Ball GT , Goku and Vegeta remembered that they can still grow their Tails which resulted into SS4. In Dragon Ball Super , the Saiyans in Universe 6 evolved beyond needing a tail which makes sense in a way considering that the Universe 6 Saiyans have a higher potential than Universe 7 Saiyans and they weren't controlled/massacred by tyrants like Frieza in their Universe.

But it doesn't bother me at all after the fact that Vegeta got a family after committing mass genocide.
