As a patriot from Pilsen, the cradle of the Škoda brand, I am touched. As a VW shareholder, I need to tell you that there has surprisingly been genuine progress in Škoda products in recent ten years, too. Most of the improvements are not essential for life but you would still see the progress if you updated 😂.

For all the doubters, I own a 1.0 TSI DSG 7 and it's flawless (i.e. 0 issues so far with 140k km on the clock, regular servicing and maintenance as per the manufacturers spec at official skoda dealership). We use it for our family holidays, even when the car is fully loaded, it crosses europe east to west, north to south, over the alps,.... no sweat.... no problems whatsoever. It never feels underpowered (for those who don't get it, it's not a sports car!), the fuel economy is amazing and it is comfortable and quiet on the motorway. I don't want (and don't need) anything else.

I hired a new Octavia in Northern Ireland and it was fantastic. Big boot for our bags, and it used barely any fuel even when transporting 4 adults with baggage. It does the job perfectly well and had all the kit that you would expect. We drove from Belfast via Derry to Port Noo and back, with a mixture of dual carriageway and country roads and it cost 40 quid in fuel. Great car.

Even though mine is only 130bhp, it still pulls like a ruddy train! The torque is phenominal for its size. Absolutely love it still, and puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. One of the best cars on the road, my 2014 1.6 TDl Combi currently has 253,000 miles on it, with no issues whatsoever other than a new alternator needed around 210k. Original engine, gearbox and clutch, all perfect. Regular oil changes at 10k, with timing belt changes every 100k and gearbox oil changes at the same interval. Doesn’t look too dated in my opinion. Skoda is underrated. I relay like the discrete and classy look. The appearance is not offending like on a BMW or Audi. I used to have a 2013 Superb Alldrive (Scout, in some countries) and have a Superb Estate Laurin & Klement 2019 now. I got a nice deal and bought it new and I still love it!!! The touch screen is quite good and always obey my fingers. Can´t say that about the coffee machine at work. I guess it´s a newer generation infotainment in my car, it has no knobs at all. That generation Octavia you driving in this video is nice as well. The later one looks like a Kia, In a bad way.

Great review Matt, being a fanatical Škoda enthusiast, to say I am slightly biased would be the understatement of the century, however, as you rightly said Octavia’s are reliable, honest, value for money family transport. Their durability endorsed by the fact that around 8 out 10 taxis are Škoda’s , and around 8out of 10 of those Škoda taxis are Octavias. A famous blue Octavia featured on KZbin has covered over 400,000 miles, this example was named Miles because of this tremendous feat❤.

Have a 2018 1.6 TDI estate as my taxi. Bought it with 86k miles a year ago, now on 124k. It’s nothing exciting to look at, but it’s unbelievably comfortable, and unbelievably economical too. Customers always compliment the space in the car. I really can’t fault the car, although your opinion on the infotainment system is pretty spot on. The only downside is it’s a 5 speed gearbox and not a 6 speed. So motorway mpg probably isn’t quite as good as the 2.0 TDI

The 2021 Skoda I have at the moment, has those nice touches - the parking ticket holder, little sliding cubbies under the front seats, the ice scraper in the fuel cap, and an umbrella in the driver's door. My 2001 Fabia Estate was the first car I'd seen with those little hooks in the boot to hang bags on, and also had the sliding storage trays under the front seats. Under the bonnet, just about everything has VW stickers..... Skoda almost always do way better in customer satisfaction surveys than VW themselves do..... I once met a guy in a petrol station, who was in a new Mk2 Octavia. I asked him what he thought of it. He said it was a company car, and when he was first told he'd be getting a Skoda Octavia, he felt disappointed and dismayed. But after 6 Months and 15k miles, he said he aimed to buy it once the company renewed the fleet. Says it all....

Hired an Octavia estate car about three years ago and that was a plug in hybrid petrol. Obviously a few years newer than the one you're reviewing. It took about 6 hours to charge from a wall socket and got us around 35 miles before it ran out of electrickery. It had regenerative braking which put little more into it which got us into and out of service areas and onto and off the ferry. I was impressed.

I had a 2018 Octavia estate with the 2.0 TDi and manual box for 5 years as a company car. As you say, it just does everything. Great dog car with the huge boot, great for camping, great for eating motorway miles. Mine didn't need AdBlu, I think they'd phased it out by 2018. When it went back to the lease company I didn't miss it though because I was totally bored of driving it. Despite the practicality I just desperately wanted something different for a change.

We had one on our company fleet. I loved it. The interior ambience was something else; not the material quality but the design, space and airiness. To get the three in a row seating did mean it was a bit wide, but most other cars have since caught it up. We'll never see its like again.

I had a Gen1 Octavia and agree with your comments about it feeling slightly "own brand", but compared with the Golf it was sleeker looking and more elegant, had more room and far more equipment for the money. I just loved the inverted snobbery of driving a Skoda back then. It did 180k before we parted company and it still drove well. I always thought that the Czechs rather upstaged VW with the first Octavia and they are possibly still doing that. Given a bag of components, they produce a better car in many respects.

Something to note about the DSG boxes - the 2.0 TDI engine has the better wet clutch gearbox, whereas the 1.6 TDI and 1.0/1.4/1.5 TSI has the worse dry clutch system. The wet clutch gearboxes are pretty good, the dry clutch not so much.

6:11 I've currently got a 1.6 diesel Octavia DSG on a 15 plate, and you're right it can feel a little underpowered, especially in 2nd gear but like any car once it gets going it's fine (and it does go) 😇 I get about 57ish mpg it's practical and only £35 tax but apparently not ULEZ compliant, go figure 🤷🏼‍♂️. I would advise anyone near a ULEZ area to stick with petrol regardless of mpg differences as I bought my car in July last year and if I were to trade it in I'd lose around £6k based on current figures. Thanks Mr Khan you leg-end.

Had a Mk2 1.9 tgi, lovely car, miss it really. And yes I agree very cheap to run - around town 49mpg, on the longer trips up to 72.9mpg. For mine - Anti roll bar bushings were a regular pain, along with the clutch & fly wheel that cost over £700 at the time - had to pay back monthly. broken rear spring and put a dent in the nsr bumper. Then the PS failed, that was £400. AK02 bought in 2004 and ran until 2017, when it was pxd but ran on until March 20232 when it stopped having MOT - having put on 205,950 miles on the clock, after I left it it had 119k

Just been watching a video about a Maserati Granturismo, saw one at the petrol station the other day, it sounded wonderful and looked like it cost a lot more than it actually did. Now I’ve clicked to a video of an Octavia. The ultimate sensible car! I bought an ex demo Octavia in 2002, I wanted a Golf but couldn’t afford one. The Octavia was certainly a bit of a poor relation, cheapo trim and poor brakes, still rear drums back then where a Golf would have discs, but still a decent, solid car. Despite buying it from main dealer it’s the only car I ever sold at a profit!

The Octavia to me is car that is best described as ‘smart’. It’s the four wheel equivalent of the daily-wear suit, which is very ‘Golf-like’ and also no insult to the car; Skoda know exactly what the Octavia should be. The VRs’ are damn quick things. Don’t worry Matt, you’re in the right company; I think the PT-Cruiser and Multipler are quirky, interesting cars these days.
