I bought a new 2002 Mondeo Estate Ghia X 2litre diesel. I ran it for 75,000 miles and gave it to my son. He ran it for a further 70,000 miles and traded it in. Other than service parts the only work needed was a new fuel pump and a new radio. A brilliant car and good value for money.

The last Mondeo I owned was a 2006 2.0 tdci bought for £750 in 2015. It had less than 100k on it and I thought I'd bagged a real bargain. When I drove it home I noticed a slight rattle so the next day I took it to my mechanic and found out it had a broken spring. I also discovered that the flywheel was on it's way out so straight away £1300 for a new flywheel, clutch and a front spring. About a week later it went into limp mode as I was overtaking and nearly killed me. This was something that happened almost every time I drove the car I actually kept the car for 3 years clocking up 150k but despite dozens of trips to different mechanics I never found out why it kept going into limp mode?

@@Norfolkbiker50 Same limp mode problem with my 53 plate diesel mondeo estate. And i've been told of plenty others too. I loved the car. Black with tints. But it wasn't worth spending money on to sort the problem so i scrapped it. Gutted.

This is positive proof that if a car is decent in the first place, and is then maintained properly, it will last and will pass an (advisory free) MOT 19 years later!! I’ve had 2 models of these and they’re great cars, very underrated. Great video as always Matt, thank you…👍😊

My Dad had this car. Literally. This was my Dad's car, which he'd owned since it was a couple of years old. He looks after things really carefully, and i am quite proud of the feedback given about it (and indirectly him.) I am a bit annoyed i didn't take him up on his offer to have it actually - it's cost far less to keep going than my E61. I never liked the seat covers though - why spend your life in a car protecting the seats so the next owner can make a £1500 profit?

It's good to see cars like this that were looked after and living a good lifespan, so many of them were driven to the moon and back and scrapped within a few years. I know people like to mock the "Mundaneo" but they were competent everyman cars back in the day. Not very desirable but they served a purpose and did it pretty well. I had a '94 mk1 years ago and it served me well.

your point about flash is the classic dilemma in a sense, as well as a timing of when to use the car. I am approaching my mid '50's and in my american generation, displaying wealth was gauche, and/but it depended on whether a person really was showing off, i.e. their personality is what it boils down to. I loved your AMG GT-- a fav car of all time to my mind. And cannot afford one now.

I still have my 2012, 2.0L Tdci Mondeo Estate...it's one of those oddities in the car world the Mondeo is (and I am talking about the Euro Mondeo, the US one ruined it, last gen). It's not ugly, not bad to drive with the independent rear suspension and stock 235/45R17 tires (great for twisties, planted on the motorway) and won't break the bank to service while parts are available...what it is awesome for is a weekend camper conversion since the seats go flat down (you just unscrew the bottom parts, leave them at home, and then you can fit a 2m long air mattress)...As I recall Matt bought one in blue and sold it for profit (but it was lowest trim, the higher trim 2007‐2014 Mondeos had nice kit...parking sensor allround, satnav, Ford converse+ screen, heated and cooled seats, heated windscreen, bixenon etc)

A mobile Werther's Original that handles and hopefully won't let the future owner down. I'm up for that. Surely worth 2k all day in the current market.

Got one new in dec 2001 2,0 Ghia Business Edition 5d. A nice front drive wheel car. Driving enjoyment one of the best in it's class. Have done 240 km/h on the odometer. A bit loud inside and suspension not fast enough for bad roads Weak points are deteriorating door handle trim. Stuck handbrakes. Even front braks. Front springs can brake to early like 70 000 miles for me but I also load them through corners more than any one else but also others have gotten them broken earlier with out loading them. Then rust is the last weak point. I had mine to may 2013 and about 80 000+ miles. The engine and gearbox was still like new. Did my services except the first ones by my self. Still ford owe me a new one.

I use an early Mk3 estate as a daily driver and have something much more fruity to play with at the weekend. Don’t mock the RS owners club card… Potential rear subframe rot is the main issue on the estates + plenty of dislike from the wife. Very simple to maintain (petrol) and drives better than a few modern cars. It replaced a Mk 1 Focus as a daily, might as well be consistent.

Nothing beats a Mondeo. My old crush father had one, W reg. He would give me a lift in sometimes. Solid ship.

These cars are fantastic family cars or for a trades person looking for reliable big car to transport tools and materials around with the fear of damaging it. This is proof of you look after your car it will stay on the road for a long time.

I adore my one owner 3rd gen Mondeo, on just 74k original miles, it’s a fantastic car, we’ve had all different cars including Mercedes, MG, BMW and many more, but I’ll be frank my Hatchback Mondeo petrol is a great car. One of things beware of on this era only Mondeo estate is rear axles can be a bit iffy.

I've never owned Ford. Two times I've had It as lendcar from my garage. One petrol. 2.0. It drove ok, but very thirsty. Later a diesel automatic. A Mondeo is like porridge. It gets the job done, but you'll never get to love it.

I had a gold (champagne) 02 Omega. Not my choice of colour, but when you're buying secondhand, colour isn't really high on the list. Loved that Omega, a comfy old barge.

Yet another video where Matt shows how well bred he is. I don’t mean posh, just civilised. Doesn’t want to appear brash, not ashamed to drive his Berlingo and thinks about taking his sunglasses off. Class.
