Hey girls, I'm 24, Somali, I've been married for nearly 4 yrs now and I have a toddler. my advice to those seeking marriage is firstly and most importantly, look towards their deen. wallaahi when you are married the only thing that will matter to you is whether this person fears Allaah or not. this is will reflect the way he treats you, your family, and he will be an example for your children. You do not want a man who curses around his children, mistreats his wife or his parents. do not be fooled by the courting stages meaning the sweet talk, gifts, as long as a man fears Allah he will have good characteristics.

It's so amazing to see such similarities among our religions. We christians (protestants to be exact. I don't think Catholics care, forgive me if I'm wrong) believe that your spouse should be God fearing as well. Much love

I'm a Christian but I love the idea of the hijab (pls don't be offended if I say anything incorrectly. I'm only 16 Idk much 😂). The concept behind it is so precious and I love how Muslim women look in them. Your beautiful faces are able to show through without the help of your hair. So precious. Much love from the Protestant community. May God bless you 🙏🏽

Hi Aysha & Friends! I was 39 when I married my husband. He was 33. I have learned a lot from him and do not think our ages have been an obstacle. Marriage is challenging for many reasons. We are from different cultures and have an age gap, but I would marry him again and again because he has the character I prayed for in a spouse. The blessing is in having a God fearing partner who loves God and loves you. Besides, he introduced me to Islam. I recently converted. To those who debate a man marrying an older woman, just remember that the prophet Mohammed (pbuh) did it...so it's good for us too! Much love...great topic!

I love this series! In regards to marrying within your race/ethnicity I think it's definitely easier but not necessarily "better"... You learn so much and become wiser from experiencing different cultures. About age: it's really just a number. More importantly is how his mentality is and life experiences.

I totally agree with how in our community if you aren't married after a certain age people think you have high standards... But that's so ridiculous to me because not everyone get to where they feel comfortable with their education and career path at age 25.. Maybe we want to change fields or pursue a masters or PhD.. I feel like men get more time and no one says that an unmarried 25 year old man has high standards.. My advice would be to not care if anyone gives you a hard time for being single and never settle for anything less than what you feel is right. Looking forward to the next Hijabi Talks .

Phone Fone everyone says they won't be picky by a certain age until they reach that actual age. Desperate times call for desperate measures, if you're alone at 35 and everyone around you is married watch your standards are going to drop whether you like it or not. Because guess what? They have to. You can't be picky at 35 anymore

Tasnim Noshin .....this is a major problem within the Muslim communities and it needes to be addressed! Allah made us all different so that we may know one another. Marrying someone because your of the same culture if foolish! Marriage should be based strictly on DEEN. Culture? Seriously! You can teach someone your culture that's the beauty of intermarriages. I feel sad for those people who choose a spouse based on culture. Study Islam and understand what Allah says not what your parents say/want. On the day of judgement you will stand in front of Allah alone! No parents. No husband. No kids etc. As a more mature and wise woman I'm happy to be married to my wonderful Senegalese husband and I'm from Belize central America raises in California and I've hold on to my culture and embraced my husband :)

Well everyone is different and wants different things. I think its more important to do what is right for you. You definitely shouldn't be closed off from it happening, if someone crosses your path and it was meant to be then yea, go for it. But if you're not ready to get married, then there really is no reason to be looking. God has a plan for us, whether you're actively look or not looking at all, when the time is right it'll happen. No need to stress, just live your life and do you :)

Yup M I feel like you read my mind lmao I turned 21 a month ago and am beginning the process of looking for marriage now. I get scared when I see my single older cousins (they are not single by choice) who are like 30, some of them 35 and still never been married. I would hate to end up like them; not that that's anything wrong with that lifestyle (being single and all) but it's just not for me. I'll be done with school in 1 year and I don't mind being married/engaged while i pursue my masters iA because nothing stops you from completing your education during marriage. Anyways I agree with you, but everyone is different. But let's be honest - the majority of Muslims want to get married someday, and I think it's better to look when you're young than wait too long. The proposals die down as you get older. And honestly, the whole marriage search and finding the right person is not easy. For some people it may take a day to find the perfect match but for most it doesn't. I'm 21 and giving myself 4 years so I can be married by 25 which is an ideal age not too old not too young for marriage. and even 4 years may not be enough. Just Imagine you wait till 30 when it's even harder to find someone and don't find a good match till 34 that's if you're lucky enough to. thats way too old. So overall, although there's nothing wrong with pursuing further education and "living life" in your 20s...recognize the importance of marriage now, and remember not to put it off before it's too late.

Hello, Bengali here; this video was cool. With the Bengali perspective I can inform you a little; firstly the assumption that outsiders have of Pakistanis and Bengalis or Bengalis and Indians being super alike is wrong (I'm going to keep things one hundred here, there are similarities, we are all South Asian). Indians and Pakistanis have more diverse cultural makeups, you can group them into 2/3/4 big cultural groups; Bengalis are 1 group (they will have more in common with Indian Bengalis, but then there's religious difference so no scope for marriage there). If you want an example you can relate to; I would say Hararis, Somalilander, Djiboutians, Eritreans, Amharic Ethiopians etc are a lot closer/more similar than Pakistanis and Bengalis. A more fitting comparison would be Hararis and Kenayns/Tanzanians/Ugandans. Next, when it comes to closed off; I can't speak for Hararis as there aren't many in the UK, but there is a large Somali community. I would say Somalis are way more about marrying into their own culture than Bengalis. Somalis, Pakistanis and Arabs have a strong sense of pride, clan, kinship etc. Bengalis do too, to an extent; they are also closed off to marrying outside of the culture, but definitely not moe than East Africans (Horn of African East Africans). I would say it's more a common thing all immigrant groups from Asia and Africa tend to hold; if I'm being honest. With Bengalis there is an inferiority complex/colorism that affects a large portion. I would say more so the younger generation, than the older generation. The younger generation are more exposed to the globalized world; they see these beauty standards, Bollywood, Hollywood, and want to fit in. They bemoan the fact that they are short, dark, have wide noses (common features of Bengalis) so there is a huge lack of wanting to "marry within the culture" or the admirable self pride that Somalis, Nigerians, Pakistanis, Arabs, Afghans have. The younger generation especially lust after East African noses, lighter skin of Middle Easterners, lighter eyes of Turkish, Albanians etc and the height of all these groups. Not nice to say, but kept it 100% real here about the colorism/height discrimination/self hatred prevalent amongst large sections of Bengali youth.

This was awesome to watch. I have a question - have either of you ever been approached by someone who wasn't Muslim who was interested in getting to know you on THAT level?

I disagree with the point made about marrying into your own culture so your kids can learn the language. I personally come from a mixed background and my mom still made sure we grew up to learn moroccan darija because that is the language she spoke to us.. So we all understand and speak it well even though our dad isn't moroccan. It's all about how willing you are to teach your children about your culture while also letting the other parent introduce their culture and together you will inshallah have children who are knowledgeable about both cultures and grow up to love learning about other cultures as well. I can personally say coming from two backgrounds makes you really open and tolerant to other people. But I 100% understand why people would want to marry into their own culture as well.

You're totally right, it's the responsibility of both parents to teach their kids. And nowadays even when you have parents of the same culture, that doesn't always necessarily mean that you'll know that culture that well either.

Great discussion, its nice seeing young east African women come together and discuss issues prevalent in our cultural society. Next topic should be issues that are " taboo" as what some of the comments below suggested.

I'm Pakistani (half white American so I do come from a mixed-culture background) and what you said about differences among 'similar' Muslim cultures is so true. At least in South Asia, all of the countries have a lot of awful history between us, regardless of whether we share religions, so that leads to a lot of tension especially in the older generations. But I think the younger generations are definitely starting to care less and less about things like nationality and specific culture (like my father for instance decided to inter-marry even though it upset his family). Thank you for doing this talk btw, this was so cool!!!

So true! Marrying into a different culture is good in that way because it'll make people more open-minded and not dwell on ethnic tensions from the past.

I was in a relationship with someone 6 years younger and I always questioned myself. Did I get the reaction because he is younger or did I get that reaction because that's the way he is. I had never been with someone who did not have his own (place, car) but something about him made me love him. He was not my type looks wise, but that changed as well. From that experience though I'd rather have someone who os somewhat accomplished and has his own things because feeling like you're raising your boyfriend is no fun.

I'm not Muslim but I truly enjoyed this and look forward to future episodes. ^_^ It was highly informative and helped in breaking some of the stereotypes that tend to blanket every culture that practice Islam. Where I'm living, women are free to choose their husbands but there are also both arranged marriages and plural marriages. Is this the latter practised by members of your culture? And what are your personal feelings towards it?
