Good tips. All in the category of "Don't use the camera as advertised." My camera overheats using "Award-winning HyperSmooth 5.0 video stabilization for buttery 5.3k video". My use cases require me to start recording, ...then let run until the end of the activity. That does not happen anymore. It did happen with my GoPro 9 at max res. and max stabilization. I record at 30 or 24fps, use fast cards, GPS and displays off. I applaud you for finding workarounds to deal with the flaws of this camera. But, that is what they are - flaws.

I learnt the hard way on recording footage. I always used to film long sections when say, mounted on my mountain bike. It took ages to edit and find footage I wanted. I now film 10 to 20 second clips which removes the headache of editing long clips. Thanks for all your tips, I didn't realise when using GoPro indoors, to turn off stabilisation and reducing the frame rate. Excellent work mate! 🙂

In my opinion you should always shoot in 60 fps. There might be some action that happens that you wish you could slow down, but because you shot in 24 or 30, it isn't possible. Shooting at 60 fps gives you flexibility with your footage. The exception that I'll give is if you're just talking to the camera. Then it's very unlikely you'll want to slow down the footage so 24 or 30 is fine. But any type of action, you should be shooting at 60 fps.
@GreatDayForAHike
@GreatDayForAHike Жыл бұрын
I tend to agree. I only shoot in 24 fps if I’m talking to the camera and know I won’t want to slow that portion down later. Everything else I usually do 5.3K 60 or 4K 120.
@NickandAnna
@NickandAnna Жыл бұрын
This is exactly my thinking. The only reason you'd shoot in 30 or 24 is if the camera is stationary and you're just talking to it in a low motion room situation. But at that point, why bother changing the settings on your camera every time you go to shoot?
@blackmamba6938
@blackmamba6938 Жыл бұрын
@@NickandAnna The other scenario where you should shoot at a lower framerate that i forgot to mention is if it's night time. You should shoot at a lower frame rate to gather more light.

What I don’t understand is, GoPro has made a “high performance” product that glitches, ie: over-heats. Is that the best their technology has been advanced? Can they not make a full-proof product this day and age? These cameras cost a lot of money. It would be like buying a brand new high performance car but you have to pull over all the time on the freeway because it continually over-heats.

@GreatDayForAHike I am absolutely sorry to disappoint you and tell you from a most experienced point of view that the gopro Hero 12 is a horrible device. I am a travel vlogger using gopro with purpose. I'm sharing with you my most recent experience only from yesterday as I am currently visiting a country in scorching hot temperatures like 43 Celsius and my gopro was shutting down on my literally every 10 minutes from overheating issues. As the previous comment said it so well, if they aren't capable of producing a good enough item in this day and age to overcome overheating then why are they over charging us so much for a faulty product only to force me to sacrifice the quality of image settings just so that my camera wouldn't overheat?

I always seem to be the exception to the rule. Needing specific footage for AI inferencing, I needed to obtain long footage of various people activity. Not controlling the "people" flow, I am relying on organic foot traffic to capture what I need for the AI inferencing material needed to extract people attributes and test the software's abilities. So yeah, I put it up against an office window in a room facing down the long hallway to capture the traffic. Being in a "WeWork/Spaces" type location, foot traffic is dependent on the people working there and walking around. This means long times of recording so I can edit in post to get what I need. These setting helped keep it running longer - thank you.

Excellent video. I agree with you 100% on all 5 points. Especially shooting shorter clips and bringing the frame rate down. 30fps is the highest you will need in most situations, unless you want to shoot a short clip for slow motion affects. One other point, if I may add, is use a metal cage. This will act as a heat sink for the camera and draw a lot of the heat from the cam. Again, excellent video. ALL Gopro users should watch this, as over heating is a hot topic (excuse the pun) for many users.

@GreatDayForAHike
@GreatDayForAHike Жыл бұрын
This is likely due to the shutter speed. If the shutter speed gets too low due to a lack of sufficient lighting this will create a jittery appearance to the footage due to Hypersmooth not being able to function properly at this shutter speed due to more motion blur. Setting your fps to 60 like you did would resolve this by forcing the shutter speed to be faster and giving Hypersmooth more crisp, sharp frames to work with. Glad you’re all set.

@@GreatDayForAHike Thanks. BTW love your videos. Actually it was a very bright sunny day, so just the opposite. I wish I could show you how bad it was. It must be some kind of glitch with the settings I had. Like you said I found the settings that give me an outstanding picture quality - 4K/60p, 10-bit color and Linear+Lock, flat. The 200Mbps also helped a lot. I like to record entire long walks, so the overheating is a problem. I'm about to go out on a walk and test out the new settings. Thanks very much for your videos. I use my GoPro 10 for fly fishing videos and the Hind Sight feature works perfectly for being able to catch the action. The obvious downside is that I have to have the camera on and filming in the background. Do you have any suggestions on effectively using Hind Sight ? I was also wondering if changing batteries more frequently would have any positive impact on keeping the camera temp down? I usually film in 4K and 60 fps. Thanks very much. Keep up the good work !
@GreatDayForAHike
@GreatDayForAHike 10 ай бұрын
Thank you and great question. When using Hind Sight I do recommend having the GoPro connected to a power bank and if possible having the battery removed from the camera while it is connected. Of course making sure there isn’t a chance of the camera getting too wet since the USB pass thru door makes it no longer waterproof. If you can mount your GoPro in a place where it can capture a good view of any possible catches while fishing this also helps. That way when you hit record it will for sure capture what you want it to. I think having the battery out of the camera fully and powering it via a good power bank may have the biggest impact on keeping it cool for your use case. Thanks!

Thanks for the good advice, It was 27C out here and I had the Hero 9 running as a dash cam and my air co is broken, so it shutdown after 20 minutes or so, with a message I couldn't read fast enough. I assume it was a thermal overheat, as I was trying it on UHD 30 fps. What it recorded looks very good, but alas, It didn't make the road home. Just playing with it, filming what I encounter on the road (and that's a lot of misery), so we go again next week at 1080, maybe 60 or 30 fps.

Damn, I just bought a Hero 9 and a Hero 8, with the sole purpose of using them as dash cameras on the front and back, for long bike rides. Any idea how long you may get out of it running it at 1080p 30fps but with hypersmooth running before it overheats? This would be in the UK which is generally quite cold and of course you would have air flowing on it whilst cycling. (Average temp is about 25c in summer here). I'm thinking instead of using spare batteries connecting it to a power bank may also help. Also wasn't sure if needed to go to 60fps on 1080p as the idea would be to be able to read number plates of cars if needed.

I use my gopro to record my band. So it's about and hour running for each set. I use a power bank and control it with my ipad. Does using the power bank and app control make it more likely to over heat? I overheated last night and I was at first shooting 5.3k linier and then swithed to 4k. Always shooting in 30P. I also have the media mod on gopro 11. Please let me know. For some reason everything failed last night and the app seems so so unreliable always.

Great questions. Using a power bank should decrease the likelihood of overheating. Having it connected via the app could increase the risk a bit due to this requiring a wireless connection to the camera. If your camera is stationary and not moving you can turn Hypersmooth off. This will help decrease the amount of heat generated. The Media Mod does hold in some extra heat. If it's warm inside, a small fan blowing on your GoPro could also be helpful.

@@GreatDayForAHike Thank you. I could get away without using the media mod if need be because I use and external recorder for my audio so I really only need a scratch track. i ended up here for a similar but different problem im gonna leave a note for others: Hero 8 and allegedly 9 too can work as a webcam without a battery. If it's overheating as a webcam, take out the battery and run a USB-C cable through the appropriate port (doesnt require the Media Mod but works with that too). In my case I had to try it like 4 times before it actually worked, I even tried a different cable that didnt work then went back to the original tried again and it worked. Just keep trying. Also allegedly some USB-C cables are power charging only and do not have the Data connection pins they typically have. Won't work with power-only, find one that definitely does Data connections too. If you can use it to transfer files then it has data pins, clearly.

So basically if I must use my GoPro for long moving clips, I should just keep using my ancient GoPro 4. If I only wanted to use my GoPRO 10 for 1) no more than 1 minute short clips 2) at 30 fps framerates, at 1040p 3) no hyper-smooth, and 4) not use any of the micro SD cards I already own, what is the point of a GoPRO 10? The longest my GoPro 10 can run is 1 minute to 5 minutes before it shuts down for even longer to cool down. I missed all but one important scene because it was overheated. Spent 2 days traveling to the location and back. Got basically zero useful film. I don't understand why people keep saying that it is rare to use a GoPRO for long sessions. I can't drive or kayak down a mountain 4x4 or river and push the on and off button. I had the 1.46 update and was shooting in 4k and 30fps. This camera is just junk. Before I toss it away, I'll explore hooking up a water-cooled jacket for the thing that is usually used for computer CPUs.

So if you have the iPhone 15 Pro or Max with the ability to film in Pro Res and grade the footage later on you can get really good results from the iPhone 15 camera. The iPhone may work better in that type of inside/low light environment too even without Pro Res. The GoPro as an action camera shines while being used for action and outdoors in good lighting. Its strength is not indoor or low light filming.

Great question. If you’re using the GoPro indoors in an air conditioned building or with fans hitting the camera, it will likely be okay. However, if the camera is sitting stationary on a tripod make sure to turn Hypersmooth off. This will further help with cooling. In addition if you have the GoPro connected to a power cable you could keep the battery door open/remove the battery to further dissipate heat. 2.7K 60 should rarely create any overheating issues. Unless you need the 60 fps you could do 2.7K 30 or 24.

So, to sum it up"the GoPro is a 1080 at 30fps camera. The rest of all the advertisement is just for 'very special circumstances' like; no sun on the camera, the camera has to be moving, no indoor usage. Imagine a car manufacturer would do this: top speed = 200 (when going downhill at 30 degrees angle and a strong tail wind with no sun and 20 degrees Celsius max and airco, abs, radio and lights of, for 2minutes only. Else it will do 80kms/hr as max speed. Please pay double the money compared to a car that can always run at 180kms/hr - till you run out of gas. It is an action camera: it supposed to be exposed to blazing sun for hours and keep working till battery runs dry. I am very glad I did a thorough research and did not buy this thing - and it is all about overheating: it would have annoyed me every day. Either you build something that works or you don't make it. And the funny thing is - I am looking for a new action camera because the one I have has one problem: it fails during operation! (Garmin virb) all I need is a thing that simply works. The search continues.

If you want to use it in 1080p at 30fps you certainly can. I use mine at 5.3K 60 and 4K 120 most of the time and then 5.3K 24fps the rest of the time. It remains my favorite action camera and I have no issues with it including zero overheating problems. I use GoPro genuine batteries and the SanDisk Extreme MicroSD cards as recommended and it works great. The only action camera I have ever had overheat on me during use was the DJI Action 2. Eventually DJI released a case that helped disperse the heat but until they did that one overheated a lot.

I`m very disappointed when the camera turns off while filming, and what can I say to the client when the important moment is not filmed.
