I can see this game being expanded out by having to "conquer" different regions with different/harsher climates. The king wants to expand his kingdom and since you did so well with the town of Bardless, you are tasked with settling a new town at the edge of the Bog of Death. Or maybe you have to create a basecamp on the perpetually snow-covered Mount Malice where an evil lich resides--clear him out before he gets too uppity. Perhaps the final town would be to run the goblins out once and for all and create a town on their own turf with near constant invasions.

I too am frustrated by the lack of games that combine city management and beating the crap out of things. My exposure to such games comes from Soul Blazer (which is by the same folks as Act Raiser) and Digimon World. They're both quite different from Hinterland (for a start, the characters you can recruited are specific individuals rather than random schmucks who show up in your town), but the underyling duality of creation and destruction remains. And, whilst I'd criticise both games in a bunch of areas, I still consider them both to be unrefined gold. There's promise in the premise, is what I'm saying. And I fully endorse locking game designers in a room if it means seeing the genre's potential realised.
@KedViper6 жыл бұрын
Bob McBob I agree but the problem with games that mix genres (especially with fast-paced action and slow-paced stategy/management) is that you're demographic is probably going to be pretty small forcing you to focus on a niche so bigger game developers tend to steer clear of those types of games. Almost all the innovation is in indie gaming and this is one of the reasons.
@OrnluWolfjarl6 жыл бұрын
Dwarf Fortress kinda does it, but beating the crap out of things isn't essential to stockpiling your fortress.

What the fuck are you doing Ross, it's middle of the night, I have work tomorrow! Come on man! EDIT: I'd totally trust an Undead Mayor, he is the least likely type of mayor to have greedy aspirations for physical riches, which would most likely lead to corruption, he's undead and immortal, if he decided to become a mayor in his undead lif- urm, After-life then that means that's exactly what he wants to do, serve his people.
@handsomebrick6 жыл бұрын
That's his motto, better immortal than immoral.

If he was able to make an entirely undead labor force who weren't just y'know zombie slaves, like the undead he called forth really just want to do the labor, he could create a Utopia for the living folk. He wouldn't need taxes to operate because none of the government or work force actually need anything so all the money goes to the living people or for better import and export trade. This is while all the living people need to do is live their life and die happy because that's when they're resurrected to join the work force.

Well, I think that makes for good role playing, though that's if everyone is willing to actually rp and not just try to rush through and smash everything. Pretty much why I quit attending D&D sessions. I feel like Ross is the kind of guy who would take advantage of the open-ended design of D&D. After all, Deus Ex is one of his favorite games. Additionally, I'm pretty sure he just hated those things in this game specifically rather than necessarily hating them in general.

My last name "Baird" was a scottish clan, it apparently comes from the word "bard", but this was before people wrote names down, or agreed on spelling. There are many names that come from "bard", but last names then were given based on what you did, or who you were the son of ie Robertson = Robert's son. That being said, my family got kicked out of scotland about 100-200 years after it was given lands and titles. Ross are you aware of any of your ancestors that would have lived then? Could explain some things lol. Good video as always! cheers.

Games I've found with similar systems to Hinterland as of July 2nd 2022: Kenshi (mostly, this is one option for playing) The Sim Settlements 2 mod for Fallout 4 (after a while of story) Starsector (seems to be a major end game option) Cult of the Lamb Cygnus Enterprises This gameplay type seems to speak to me on some deep primal level It's like a strange mix of Dwarf Fortress' Fortress Mode and Adventure mode into one game I seem to just crave more similar to it. i'm surprised you haven't heard of "the horde." it's got a very similar sort of idea [it's just not VERY high fantasy - there's no real "magic' and so on in that game.] - basically: you make a village, the village gets attacked by the horde and if you live through that particular phase, you get to do it again throughout a year with seasons [summer, winter, spring, autumn] and at the end of that year, assuming you survive, you get sent to an ever more godforsaken place. the hilarious bonus here - and the bit you might find amusing - is that it features a character called chaucey who is played by kirk cameron. [yes, THE kirk cameron from growing pains.] i'm not sure it's game dungeon material, exactly, but you may want to give it a whirl and play it for about twenty minutes, just to see what i'm getting at.

While it's not the exact same theme, Factorio has a similar idea. You're a lone engineer on an alien planet who must construct an automated factory in order to collect, process and refine the world's natural resources and eventually build a rocket ship to escape, all while defending yourself against the local wildlife. The more pollution your factory causes, the more aggressive the wildlife becomes. However I will warn you, it very much learns towards the "people who are good at this are probably system administrators" side of things, and the combat is more like a tower defense than an action RPG.

I just love the fact that in this town you can just be a normal peasant, tilling your soil and live just a few blocks down from the temple of evil and its no big deal. Very inclusive of the game. One day you get a knock on your door, you open it and you're greeted by this pale, gaunt man draped in flowing black robes, covered in satanic markings and reeking of putrefying flesh informing you that he's an acolyte from the temple of evil down the road and he's going door to door asking villagers if they would be willing to donate their any deceased loved one's corpses for their necromancy research. Sure he would be defiling your corpse and blaspheming god in order to create and undead abomination, but there's this patch of land that would be great to farm potatoes and the town militia could use the extra bodies in order to clear out the wolves. It would be a noble contribution for the community.

This is what old school DnD was about. If your character got high enough of a level and renown, it became a powerplayer. If you played as a warrior, it was actually in the class description. I think at level 6-8 Idunno, the warrior became a warlord. Period. Fighting man to be more precise. In essence sooner or later, all the dungeon crawling and hack and slash and sneaking about got switched out for politics and city management. Kind of neat if you think about it. This was before my time, mind you. I got into playing at the early days of 3rd edition, when the paradigm shift towards the dramatic storytelling started.

Then go to the zone management menu and set the Emergency Lockdown area to a place your pawns can ride out a raid/Toxic Fallout/Heat Wave/Cold Snap/whatever. Then, when something horrible is happening, you can go to the assigned/restricted tab and set whatever pawns you want to stay in the lockdown zone until the crisis is over. The game gives you all the tools you need, you just have to figure how to use them instead of complaining that their isn't a button to do it for you.

I always make a wall around my "town", my "home" zone is all my buildings and a little way outside the wall, then i have a zone called "compound" that's only inside the wall, then i have indoors zone that is only the main building

And much of its inspiration, Dwarf Fortress, of course. I'd also add Majesty for something similar.

"RPG's tend to favor certain Playstyles" Ah! Like how Dragon Age passively aggressively keeps telling me to play a mage...

If you aren't playing an Arcane Warrior/Spirit Healer Mage you've picked the wrong class.

Ross, Dwarf Fortress seems like your kind of game. Game Dungeon episode on it, maybe?
@codeyvo6 жыл бұрын
I think Ross has talked about Dwarf Fortress in one of his livestream chats. I do believe he didn't appreciate how the images were too abstract to understand. Maybe if there was a huge facelift and graphics remaster, I think Ross would be more inclined to take it up.

Biggest problem with DF isn't even the graphics, it's the GUI/overall interface, it's just fucking atrocious. It's a shame really, because underneath it lays a great game.
@SpunkyMcGoo6 жыл бұрын
Honestly I found the game pretty simple to understand once you get the hang of it. It's kind of like Tekken, where the hurdle isn't learning the game, it's learning how to learn the game

SerMillicent there are PLENTY of tile/texture packs for Dwarf Fortress. Only the most hardcore dorf players actually play with the ASCII aesthetics.
@ashurarbaces80696 жыл бұрын
Ross described it during his latest livestream as a game he would play during retirement because the concept is awesome but the learning curve and the interface are too much of a hassle to dedidicate time to it now.

Before watching this "This reminds me of actraiser" And actraiser is mentioned. Therefore Ross is a man of great knowledge and should be tributed one cold beer (or other beverage of his choosing)

Ross, you should consider the SpellForce games for a nice combo of RTS-RPG.

So, I have to ask: If this game was one side of a medieval fantasy town management/beating enemies up game coin, would Majesty be the flip side?
