Pumpkins are contemporaries of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, that whole early 90s alt rock scene. I don't know that I would call them grunge because that term is kind of contrived, but this is totally of that same era.

1979 is a totally different vibe, went in the more electronic direction that Billy wanted to go in after Mellon Collie. It's not my favorite sound of theirs...I live for the excruciatingly distorted heavy ass guitars juxtaposed against Billy's childlike, bratty voice. Pure magic.

This is alternative, progressive alternative really. Smashing Pumpkins got called grunge a lot but Billy Corgan's style is not the same as any of the "grunge" bands. Some people just lump loud guitar music together if it's not their cup of tea. Kind of like lumping Pearl Jam in the same category as Nirvana only works if location is all that matters. At the end of the day though, you like it, love it or hate it. Did you feel something? That's really what counts.

I will say that not all of their songs are like this one but they're mostly all good and alot are great, they just have a very wide range of styles and sounds, but they all have that underlying and unmistakable Smashing Pumpkins sound. This song is about the disappointment the band felt as being the headliner at lollapalooza…Billy had a huge issue with Perry Ferrel, from Jane’s Addiction and the creator of Lallopalooza. The rat in a cage line is a reference to feeling trapped on the tour. I saw this tour and Billy was angry, didn’t want to play the popular songs!! They played almost the whole Gish album instead. Nice! Bullet with Butterfly Wings was my introduction to Smashing Pumpkins and 90s alt rock in general. Not sure if its super representative of the Pumpkin's catalog - it's a lot heavier than some of their other stuff - but that's OK... it certainly makes an impression. 90s classic! Definitely go Cherub Rock next, then follow up with Today, 1979 and Tonight Tonight. Edit: the Genre is Alternative Rock... the Pumpkins were Grunge adjacent/contemporary, though I doubt anybody would consider them grunge itself. Their stuff got played back to back on the radio with Nirvana, Pearl Jam and The Offspring. (Speaking of which... any chance I can get you to check out The Offspring - Come Out and Play? Or Self Esteem?)

Pure, artistic early 90’s alternative rock. Progressive rock influences. Total bangers. And melodic tunes as well

This song is the reason I like metal and rock. Changed my life that day. It's their only track like this though, as far as I know. They have other goodsongs, but nothing like this. 🤘 I suggest - Bloodmeat by Protest the Hero.

i would suggest going back to their first cd, and listening to "i am one", and then run thru the stack of music they have made, the sound/feel of their tunes changes quite a bit through the years.....

When the Pumpkins were cranking out amazing songs they were in the shadows of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and other Seattle grunge bands. I'm from Chicago where they hail from and grew up in the 90's. They've always been big and relevant in the Chicago scene.

They're a unique type of rock band that was able to thrive during the grunge era without being grunge. They're amazing. Keep tuned into the drummer. He does amazing shit, and runs the show as much as the vocalist.

Pumpkins came at the heels of Nirvana. The backend of grunge. You gotta do Radiohead’s debut.

Siamese Dream is one of the most perfect albums ever recorded. Literally everything off that record is worth a listen. This song illustrates their chill/aggressive dynamics really well. They truly excel at both types of songs, and their discography is littered with both! They were a pretty tough band to categorize in the 90s.

The Smashing Pumpkins were a big part of the grunge scene, however, they are pretty diverse in their sound and use elements of metal, hard rock, alternative, psychedelic and folk rock, as well. Some of their songs are heavy, others are very soft and beautiful, while others are in-between. Some of their songs are very layed, complex and epic while others are really minimalistic. They also use electronic elements in a lot of their stuff. They're one of those bands that can't really be defined as one specific genre. That being said, they were always referred to as grunge by MTV, VH1 and the music magazines back in the 90's. This always had me scratching my head as I always thought of them more as alternative rock. I think they were originally labeled as grunge so as their sound kept changing they kind of got incorrectly stuck with that label. (Just like Deftones getting stuck with the "nu-metal" label even though it was only their first album or two that had a lot of nu-metal elements to them. The overwhelming majority of their music doesn't.) The Pumpkins came up alongside Nirvana and were direct competitors with each other. The two bands actually knew each other very well and had a bit of a rivalry going on in the early 90's. There was even a love triangle between Courtney Love, Billy Corgan and Curt Cobain, for a while.

Oh, and their best album is Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness but Siamese Dream is solidly in second place. Their first album, Gish, and the b-side album, Pisces Iscariot, are both incredible albums, as well. In fact, Pisces is so good that it became the best selling b-side album of all time, after it's release. Now, most fans consider it one of their main albums. Their final two albums (I'm speaking of the original Smashing Pumpkins band, before their break-up in 2000) Adore and Machina are also solid albums but not quite as good as their earlier work. I honestly suggest trying to go through their music in order (if possible). They are one of those bands that grew, evolved and changed a lot, over time, and it's good getting to hear their evolution as you listen to their music. I'm sure however you choose to do it will be great, though. You have an awesome channel and your passion for music is strong.

Been waiting for you to find Billy! First three albums are their best for me, Siamese Dream is in my top 3 albums of all time. They were around when Grunge was about but never quite fitted in to any specific genre. Some of their slower ones are the most beautiful , see ‘Mayonaise’ ❤

Yes, the Pumpkins have more like this. You’ll love it. The Smashing Pumpkins and the whole “alternative rock" genre grew fast in the mid-late 80s. It didn’t explode overnight, like grunge did, but it was growing steadily and was soon everywhere. It was an FU to mainstream top 40 radio, as were other “alt” genres, like alt-folk. After grunge hit, alt-rock continued growing but to fans like me felt like it was in a different lane, apart from grunge. I got into alt rock and industrial like Ministry and NIN early, then got pulled down the grunge rabbit hole and I listened to alt rock less often in the early 90s. Pumpkins were big on Lalapalooza tours. 90’s music era was fire. The whole festival scene exploded then. Good memories.

Alright dude, I was worried that you wouldn't like Billy's voice but I was surprised. They're something like alternative rock, grunge adjacent. Mellon Collie was a complete masterpiece, one of the absolute best rock albums ever made, like top 10 or top 20 in my opinion. And Billy was one of the few rockers of that age that can actually play guitar. Most other alternative rockers after grunge didn't bother to solo or didn't have the talent to. Billy's a musical genius.
