Pumpkins are contemporaries of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, that whole early 90s alt rock scene. I don't know that I would call them grunge because that term is kind of contrived, but this is totally of that same era.

1979 is a totally different vibe, went in the more electronic direction that Billy wanted to go in after Mellon Collie. It's not my favorite sound of theirs...I live for the excruciatingly distorted heavy ass guitars juxtaposed against Billy's childlike, bratty voice. Pure magic.

"His voice is weird in a good way" yep, exactly that. I think it tends to be the make or break thing about SP, for a lot of people, some people just struggle to enjoy Billy Corgan's singing voice. Myself, I rememeber not liking his voice at first, but over time it grew on me. "Melanchollie and the Infinite Sadness" is one of my favourite albums of all time and was basically the soundtrack to my teen years.

There are so many amazing songs from them. I will say that not all of their songs are like this one but they're mostly all good and alot are great, they just have a very wide range of styles and sounds, but they all have that underlying and unmistakable Smashing Pumpkins sound. You gotta start the journey through this rabbit hole and stay active in its exploration. Here are a few of the songs I suggest you react to: -1979 -Today -Tonight Tonight -Disarm -Ava Adore -Mayonnaise -Zero -Cherub Rock and many more...

Alright dude, I was worried that you wouldn't like Billy's voice but I was surprised. They're something like alternative rock, grunge adjacent. Mellon Collie was a complete masterpiece, one of the absolute best rock albums ever made, like top 10 or top 20 in my opinion. And Billy was one of the few rockers of that age that can actually play guitar. Most other alternative rockers after grunge didn't bother to solo or didn't have the talent to. Billy's a musical genius.

Nice! Bullet with Butterfly Wings was my introduction to Smashing Pumpkins and 90s alt rock in general. Not sure if its super representative of the Pumpkin's catalog - it's a lot heavier than some of their other stuff - but that's OK... it certainly makes an impression. 90s classic! Definitely go Cherub Rock next, then follow up with Today, 1979 and Tonight Tonight. Edit: the Genre is Alternative Rock... the Pumpkins were Grunge adjacent/contemporary, though I doubt anybody would consider them grunge itself. Their stuff got played back to back on the radio with Nirvana, Pearl Jam and The Offspring. (Speaking of which... any chance I can get you to check out The Offspring - Come Out and Play? Or Self Esteem?)

Pick any song off of the GISH album or Siamese dream album and you won't be disappointed 🤘

I finally saw them play last summer and they killed it. Billy is a madman and a musical genius. Jimmy on the drums has a jazz background, which I think comes through in their music.

They were my favorite band for so many years, i was young during their prime. I remember hearing this single before the album came out and being like, whoa. They are definitely worth checking out more ❤

This song is about the disappointment the band felt as being the headliner at lollapalooza…Billy had a huge issue with Perry Ferrel, from Jane’s Addiction and the creator of Lallopalooza. The rat in a cage line is a reference to feeling trapped on the tour. I saw this tour and Billy was angry, didn’t want to play the popular songs!! They played almost the whole Gish album instead. It was awesome😂

PLEASE do 1979, To Forgive, Today, Zero, and Tonight, Tonight!! (Btw if you plan on doing more Metallica please react to The God That Failed if you haven't already, it's a super underrated song on the black album. But before you do just do some quick background research about the lyrics, it's about James's mother)

I love the Pumpkins, and I was an early adopter- got their first album on cassette beginning of 1992, and loved it. They didn't get famous for a couple years, but Gish still my favorite album of theirs. However, this song is terrible (comparatively) and might be most overrated ever. Every other hit of theirs is at least better, with some verging on fully magical.

LOL, I just wrote a similar assessment. This song/album marks the point when I stopped listening to their new stuff.
