I feel like most of the Smashing Pumpkin haters are more new school and didn't grow up with them. I grew up with them, and in my experience, anyone who was a fan of alternative rock had nothing bad to say about the Smashing Pumpkins. They were heavy-hitters. If the pumpkins were coming to town, it was going to sell out. Maybe people just need to look them up on KZbin and watch them play live.

The mellowed out groove going into the high energy chorus was a staple of 90's alternative rock. It was heavily influenced by The Pixies, an 80's alternative band that influenced a lot of 90's alternative rock and grunge bands. Kurt Cobain even said "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was Nirvana's attempt at writing a Pixies song. You guys should check out the songs "Giagantic" or "Where Is My Mind" for a great example of them, although you may have heard both before. Also, please do some Queens of the Stone Age!

Can't believe "Today" wasn't in the running; a masterful song that broke through and introduced the world to a new sound. Smashing Pumpkins pioneered that sound, and IMO did it biggest and best. Billy's vocals are to be commended, in that he does a pretty good job with what he's got. Looking at him as an underdog, you find yourself cheering for him - and the band- to belt that wall of emotional fuzz out.

George is right, this structure of soft verses-hard choruses were used A LOT in the 90's, is a composition style first championed by the Pixies and Nirvana popularized it. Everyone, from Radiohead to the Cranberries to Bush to (yes, true) Blink-182 to Audioslave to Green Day has used it at least once.

Cherub Rock is more fun, but this track was iconic. Obviously darker and heavier, but the mix of the two songs is also totally different to my ears. This track was a 90s MEGA hit. Worldwide. Faith No More is a band you must check out. Midlife Crisis, Evident, Stripsearch, and Ashes to Ashes are some to consider. I would say Faith No More’s frontman, Mike Patton, has been one of the most ripped off modern Rock artists, and his risk taking and experimentation is innovative in his multitude of bands. Peeping Tom, Fantômas. Tomahawk, Mr. Bungle, and Faith No More just to name a few.

Oh hell ya! Smashing Pumpkins! Grew up on them during High School, '90s. Generation Xers! Alternative rock. Very diverse stuff. Grunge, punk, noise rock, hard rock, metal, garage band rock, shoegaze influenced. Similar to Nirvana, Foo Fighters, No Doubt (they were more SkaPunk/Raggae punk), Pixies, Weezer, Local H Hole, The Breeders, , etc. Lot of groups back then changed dynamics in their songs (mellow, slow, soft vocals then to punkish fast paced. loud buzzy guitars and yelling, going back and forth). Lot of ppl liked them, different ppl. Even if you listened to other type of genres, music. This type of rock was popular back in the '90s - mid '00s. I used to play stuff like this on my electric guitars. lol

Regarding the vocals, I like vocals that sound original. There's a certain kind of emotion you can translate singing with this tone that resonates with certain experiences and thus makes it unique and necessary. It feels genuine and real too which many "perfect voices" don't - many good voices sound sterile and meaningless when they end up overproduced.

Huge Pumpkins fan here. Siamese Dream album is definitely where you should start. Nobody kind of likes the Pumpkins. They are a 100% or nothing band. Not many bands had so much heart and creativity in their music. If you were in my living room, I would’ve played you Geek USA for it’s super overdrive then down to slow grinding beautiful riffs. Also, Mayonnaise is perfection. Give them another shot on this album. I can go on and on. You guys are great. Keep it up!!

That is not true, I like their earlier stuff and not even all of it, and don't like the newest stuff at all. I'm 35 and the first CD's I ever bought was Mellon Coliie and the Infinite Sadness so trust me I know lol. I do like alot of that and Siamese Dream but some songs completely miss the mark for me, and most of the newer songs past Mellon Collie. They're talented as hell and I did go to the reunion tour, I wish D'arcy would have shown but at least Billy and James were able to make up for the reunion. Still an awesome amount of good songs, but not every song makes me feel amazing like when I listen to Tool, and they're kind of another band that people would say you're either 100 percent in or out, but I don't think thats true for anything that can involve something that you personally like stylistically, I mean that's why there are bands like blur and sum 41 that produce 1 hit wonders, because on at least one song they brought something a lot of people loved. Oh well no reason for a novel....RESPECTTTTT ::edit:: typo

The chorus in this song has one job: It's the loud part, so we can get a dramatic fall-away drop back into that gnarly spooky verse groove. The song's all about that big dynamic shift, the verse thudding and rattling along, and the drum solo (that has a couple guitar squeals filling in the space behind it).

Some might say The Smashing Pumpkins are Grunge (simply because they rose to fame in that era) but Alternative Rock is a more fitting category IMO. This song is simple but it makes incredible use of dynamics (quiet verse vs. loud chorus). That style was first "pioneered" by first wave Alternative Rock bands like the Pixies in the '80s and then brought even further into the mainstream by bands like Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana in the '90s (Smells Like Teen Spirit is another song that's a great example of the "quiet/loud" structure). I don't really think TSP sounds like Blink 182 or Sum 41 since those are Pop Punk bands (Bullet With Butterfly Wings and most Smashing Pumpkins are much darker in tone IMO) but I do agree that the song structures are often similar, again, making simple use of dynamics.

As George may have suspected, Smashing Pumpkins were actually the pioneers of that style. All of the bands that he said it reminded him of-Blink 182, etc...-came years later. This sort of thing is not uncommon-how we judge bands as sounding derivative because we've heard so many bands imitate them. Victims of their own success, you might say. That said, this is not one of their more innovative songs. "Cherub Rock" would have been the better one to review, in terms of what defined Smashing Pumpkins. But, for the most legit original stuff, something off their first album, such as "Rhinoceros," would be the way to go.

Yeah Siamese Dream, Gish and Pisces Iscariot are there best by far. Stopped listening after that

@@user-jh4rl1wq1y Then you've missed out on a lot of great tracks. Songs like Tarantula and Doomsday Clock from Zeitgeist are great, and their latest album is very much reminiscent of their early material.

I didn't like his voice the first time I heard it either. In fact, I think they were popular for a year before I heard the entire "Siamese Dream" album and realized how effing brilliant it was as a whole. Amazing album!! Almost anything from that album is pure GOLD. But especially Rocket, Cherub Rock, and Quiet. Also, George, this is nothing like Blink or Sum41, but I digress. Y'all gave it a chance, though. Kudos! I did eventually get into the vocals, but I hear you George. LMAO.

This song is good for representing the sound of the ‘90s, not Smashing Pumpkins. You still need to check out more just to hear their drummer really go off. Jimmy Chamberlin is top class.

An alternative rock band that I'd love to see you guys react to is Silverchair, they're from Australia but they did have a big hit in the US from their first album, which they recorded when they were only 15, but I'd like you to listen to something from their 3rd album since that's my favourite of theirs, either "Song for the year 2000", "Ana's song (open fire)" or "Emotion sickness"
