HIP OPENERS + COMPASS POSE VARIATIONS
Use props to practice your hip openers for compass pose (kneeling, seated, and standing) step by step.
Compliment this class with: "Flexibility Guide to Splits"
This tutorial is to help you build your compass pose from the ground up! Expect lots of yummy hip openers / hamstring stretches (starting gentle with reclined compass) as we work to the poses that require balance.
Recommended to pair this class with "Flexibility Guide to Split" to increase your hip/leg flexibility!
Pose sequence:
1. Gentle reclined happy baby - half happy baby
2. Gentle reclined compass
3. Seated side stretches
4. Modified downdog/forward fold/malasana+twists
5. Side angle - Triangle (with bind)
6. Modified bird of paradise
7. Lizard Lunge
8. Wide half split
9. Kneeling compass (half compass)
10. Janusrisasana side bend
11. Double pigeon/firelog
12. Seated Compass
13. Standing Compass
Move slowly, mindfully, and be patient with your body as it starts to open in areas that are not typically worked on. Finding your breath is more important than depth.
Do your best to find length in your low back (instead of rounding, sit up tall) and take your time. Flexibility takes time for the body to open up, be patient and concentrate on feeling the stretch rather than achieving the pose. Hope this was helpful!!

Never commented on KZbin before, but I've been doing your guide to splits and LOVE it. This new tutorial is something I am going to try out very soon. Questions I have are: When you say a hold this position for a few breaths - how many breaths is that? Should we be following along with you in this guide? Or Should we pause and hold positions for as long as we feel would be right? Or should every position be held for like 5 breaths? Also how often should we do this tutorial - Everyday, 2x/week, 3x/week, etc. Would also love a shoulder opener routine to help with my climbing. Sorry for the long post. Really do enjoy your tutorials and Instagram to help with various poses. Keep it up :)

Nilesh Patel I’m so happy to hear! To answer your questions: Try to hold each posture for about 5 breaths (these are a little bit on the fast side to try to keep the video length short for upload but once you practice it a few times you should remember the poses, follow the written sequence in the description and practice with your own breath - for a guide think of each inhale taking ~10 seconds and each exhale taking 10 seconds. So 5 full breaths would be about 100 seconds total) - follow along the first few times then start doing the routine on your own breathing longer - aim to practice 3x a week (pairing it with another tutorial. Equaling about 40 min of practice) - did you try out the backbend for beginners guide? I will make another one just for shoulders ♥️ Thank you so much!! Glad it helps! And pass it along to someone who might want some guidance in stretching (i was inspired to make these for my students, friends, and family but i think everyone could use it ☺️♥️🙏)

Janice Liou you have an unbelievable gift to simplify difficult positions and get me to new heights of achievement I thought I had lost long ago. Bravo, Bravo. Anything new that deals with opening your hips and shoulders, torso is a gift. But also some approaches to increasing strength of core, shoulders , arms, and legs. Ways to improve balancing and endurance. However, what ever you do will probably apply to my needs. I am so grateful, to you and consider it an amazing happening that I got to meet you and practice under your guidance. You are the absolute best I have ever had. Hugs

Fabrice Nozier it will be challenging but ok to do. If you’re a beginner don’t rush into advancing past what your body is comfortable. Each pose is taught in phases. Stay at a place where you can breathe and still feel a stretch 🙏
