Step by Step Breakdown of the Tirailleur mission from Battlefield 5, which depicts the story of French recruited "Tirailleur Sénégalais" during the 1944 Liberation of France. The "Tirailleur Sénégalais" were created in 1857 to expand France's colonial empire in Africa. If originally only from Senegal, during WW1 and WW2, they were recruited among all West African populations under French control, on a more or less voluntarily basis.

What pisses me off is that this is not just insulting to the men who fought, but also their descendants. The French are very proud of the colonial troops during the first and second world wars; writing numerous books and media showing them in high estimate along with their French comrades. What is even more insulting is the other missions- the main offender being the one in Norway; where they ignore the heroic actions of a group of Norwegian commandos that raided the Nazi heavy water shipment, and instead made a completely fictional story with a marry sue. In all honesty, WW2 is such a rich and diverse setting that one can easily show diversity where it actually existed- want female fighters to look at the Eastern front, want mixed-race army formations to look at the allies in the west, or the numerous other fronts. Or if they want to show minorities and "bring their stories to light" show some of the amazing stories and people who really existed. If you want women then have a mission where you are in a tank with Aleksandra Samusenko (the first female tank commander in the red army- 1st guards tank army), that way you can have a fun tank mission and show a real person and have your representation instead of rewriting history (seriously disabled females on the front lines was once a bloody meme).

Well the thing is most countries in Europe and Asia are based around Big Ethnic groups, Sure you have migrations from other parts but thats the beauty of this modern world. America is different, there are a lot of people in that country. All kinds of people. You have original Anglo/Welsh/Scottish descended people, Irish, French, German, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Chinese, Russian, Serbian, Italian, Mexican, Puerte -rican, Cuban, Spanish, Brazilian, Korean, Japanese, Filipino, Niger-Congo Bantu people or Blacks as they are called in the west, Vietnamese, Arabs, Punjabi, Bengali, Afghani, Turkish etc etc. Its a big country. Now I am a Pakistani. Racism is fairly common here, You won't find many Sindhi Cricketers in our National team, but institutionalised Racism was only a thing during the British Raj here. I as a Sindhi will have no problems getting a job in Punjab or getting a drivers licence, or getting my kids a good education. Rivalry and racists jokes are considered really fucking funny here so we do banter around in those sorts of ways but a certain ethnic group isn't ostracised or doesn't get lesser opportunities in life and even if you do find ethinic groups that don't get many opportunities those aren't denied because of their race or religion.America before becoming, Immigrant Haven also had slavery and after that Institutionalised Rascism until 1960s. Most countries did not go through that phase. . . Now Pakistan considers the Sharia as the basis for its constitution, The Sharia was different during different times and was regularly changed between Sultanates and Kahanates butit serves as a good basis. No Arab has predominance over a non-arab and no non arab has a predominance over an arab. No dark skinned person has predominance over fair skinned people and no White skinned person has predominance over black skinned person. Only in their deeds do they have a higher standing in front of Allah. Now that was a religious example but I can 100% assure you that , that is the way a majority of Pakistanis feel toward race. American mindset is just different. A mix of Guilt, regret, self esteem issues, anger, jealousy, hatred is what I can get at from recent TV shows, SJW culture (if you can even call it that), Hollywood, Games etc etc.

I am Algerian I used to know a guy who had a veteran grandfather And he had a story He told me that his grandfather had some problems with his family so he traveled to another city. there was a mobilization there . he was recruited I think that was in 1939 Anyway he was sent to France and fought on the front line. He had a French officer and they unit was mostly Algeria recruits. They were so afraid and shocked from the German plains bombardment it had a frightening sound They were hiding in a forest they fortified the place . Their officer had no idea what to do since the Germans kept bombing them After the bombardment, the Germans attacked using tanks. After some fighting, the French officer lost his leg due to an explosion The Algerian guy surrendered to the Germans and he was taken as a POW he was treated well by the Germans he was sent to a camp where he spent the rest of the war. Until he was liberated in 1945 or 44 not sure And then he was sent back home. Also, my grandfather cosine fought with the French in Italy but idk a lot of stories about him. He survived the war and then participated in the Algerian revolution and he survived again. People who served in ww2 here call the war war of the Germans

The game is frustrating on multiple levels - the way they smugly tell the story as if they're revealing true history, all while getting basic facts flat out wrong. Another thing that makes me angry is when my fellow Americans equate European actions and history with American ones because I guess we both have white skin we MUST be the same exact people, right?? It's shameful and insulting to all parties involved. They infantilized the African troops and demonized the French. No wonder the world hates us...

I'm honestly amazed that you didn't touch on what was by far the most heinous historical inaccuracy of the entire war story: that being the claim from the main character that the German forces that they were fighting were "elite and well-equipped". In reality, all of the German troops in Southern France were 4th-rate cannon fodder (primarily wounded old veterans, Polish and Czechoslovak Volksdeutsche volunteers and volunteering/forcibly-conscripted Ostlegionen/Ostbataillone troops from the Soviet Union and other nations across Eastern Europe) that were laughably poorly-equipped (being forced to mainly use a combination of captured Soviet, Polish, Czechoslovak, French and Italian rifles, artillery pieces and mortars that were all in pitifully piss-poor condition), completely demoralized and practically-untrained. 4 out of the 11 German divisions that were allotted to the defense of Southern France were static divisions (meaning that they had absolutely zero mechanized and motorized capabilities and were effectively forced to remain in place with absolutely zero possibility of maneuver), both the Luftwaffe and the Kriegsmarine had only a completely negligible presence that made them all but entirely worthless to the German defense of Southern France and the German defenders in Southern France only had 1 panzer division that only had half of its allotted tank strength. The American and French invasion forces only encountered a hilariously outgunned, hopelessly outnumbered, comically weak German force that was more than easily swept aside during Operation: Dragoon. Talk about an epic fail on the part of DICE.
@woahhbro2906
@woahhbro2906 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe from early 1945 onwards, but that's a myth. The Allies were out-equiped in northwest Europe in all except for artillery and transport vehicles. The Americans had worse training and had a huge NCO problem in that region for the entirety of 1944. The saving grace was the fact that the Americans outnumbered the Germans, so the brass were more aggressive because they could accept the losses. The Germans were also sending some of their highly decorated and advanced tank crews to the West as well. They weren't all old men and children.

I can kinda see where they were going with this though because of the aftermath of Operation Dragoon. In the fall of '44, 15,000 Senegalese skirmishers of both the 9th Colonial Infantry Division, 1st Free French and 2nd Armored Division were completely replaced by troops of the FFI (French Forces in the Interior) aka the French Resistance. When De Gaulle said "I want my countrymen to liberate the nations capital", the Americans agree but on one condition: that a division of white troops do it. In a confidential memo to De Gaulle from Walter Bedell Smith, Chief of Staff to General Eisenhower, it says "It is most desirable that the division above consists of white personnel. This would indicate the Second Armored Division, which with only one fourth native personnel, is the only French division operationally available that could be made one hundred percent white." (the Chad Regiment that is part of the French 2nd Armored also consists of a company of exiled Spanish Republicans). On top of that, Fredrick Morgan, a British General wrote a letter to Allied Command: ""It is unfortunate that the only French formation that is 100% white is an armoured division in Morocco. Every other French division is only about 40% white. I have told Colonel de Chevene that his chances of getting what he wants will be vastly improved if he can produce a white infantry division." The African troops were withdrawn from the colder regions to warmer ones in France or back to Africa for both R&R and training, however some did stick around fighting in the Vosges and other places. Whether it from the "Blanchiment" policy or for the troops' well-being, they left the Battlefield and returned home. It ended on December 1st, 1944 when 35 (or 300 depending on sources) Tirailleurs were killed by French troops at a camp in Thiaroye, Dakar. So thats why I say I see what the message is trying to tell here. Also I recommend you and everyone the movie he is talking about at 20:11. It's english title is Days of Glory Btw the weapon that is shown at 22:29 is not a Lee-Enfield but a Canadian made Ross straight pulled bolt-action rifle which was never issued to the French army during the war. They should have given them a Mas 36, M1 Garands, M1 Carbines, Lebel's and some others. For more info on that: www.imfdb.org/wiki/List_of_weapons_used_by_French_Armed_Forces

This, to me, is the most infuriating thing about BFV. They had one of the most advanced story telling tools in the world at the time, and were covering a period of time where all races and sexes participated in the conflict in some way, shape, or form. There were real people, doing actual brave things, in insane situations, making a huge difference. But the fuck did dice do? They just rewrote history to accommodate a message. I don't care that that they put women in multilayer, whatever,, but don't write over the actual stories and discredit the real people who's lives were actually sacrificed or put at risk to be ring the world back from the Depths of hell. I've literally never played this game and never will. Instead of women sneaking into Germany to stop the nuclear program, do a level about resistance fighters.. Or the code breakers in Guadalcanal, like my grandma. Or the Russian female tanker (I know of one, maybe there were more). Real. People. Trying their best at impossibly great risk to themselves to themselves to bring the world back to piece. Instead of shitting on these black soldiers, just tell it how it was and then show the aftermath. Just tell the story for real. As accurately as possible, with a little creative license for fun in terms of game play. And after the community of players and historians rallied against them for this, they called everyone unwoke and sexists and racists. For a company that made two decades of my favorite games, 1942 to battlefield 4, dice sure has become a shit show. *edit* -funny- sad how many comments below mine are basically exactly the same.

N'Tchoréré was a French captain of Gabonese origin who was commanding a mixed regiment (composed of both black and white soldiers). He was murdered when he refused to be separated from other french officers by the germans as the black were considered untermensh by them. He asked the honour of staying to cover the evacuation of the reste of the battailon bataillon in frond of Rommel's the 7th german panzer division after the destruction of their ammunition depot rendered its situation hopeless. They run out of ammo on the 7th of june with just 10 black and 5 white soldiers valid under N'Tchoréré's command. Off topic I saw a book with many old pictures of the town before the war and it was an absolutely beautiful town. Most of it like many other towns was completely ruined.

Amazing video very informative. I definitely learned something new . I had no idea about the North African troops and their significant contribution to the liberation of France during the second world war. You learned something new everyday . What a shame and a kick in face how the surviving Senegalese got screwed on payment and retirement pension . For €75 I would of thrown that ambassador out on his ass .

The issue with this level is that they had the soldiers treated as if they were done the same way as the Black soldiers in the US Army during WWI and to a lesser degree WWII which is even more egregious. Case in point, the 93rd Infantry Division in the Pacific during WWII was trained for combat but spent most of their service in the Pacific doing a combination of labor details, patrols and mop-up operations. While the French did employ some colonial forces for labor details in Italy during WWII, they weren’t doing what the US did to Black combat units and were taking them to convert into Engineer and Service Units like what was done to the 366th Infantry, 353rd Field Artillery and numerous Black Tank Destroyer Battalions raised early on.

If I were gonna make a first person shooter game, I'd try to make about 5 campaigns, based off the most decorated units of each Major Allied Power, namely, America, the Soviet Union, Great Britain, China, and France, and I believe the most decorated French Unit of WW2 was the 2nd Parachute Chasseur Regiment. As far as I can tell, they were mostly decked out in American M1 Carbines and British Sten guns, and that would be the only blatant inaccuracy in my game, because I'd want them to have French MAS-36 Rifles and French MAS-38 Submachine Guns. May not be totally accurate, but I believe it is still authentic, and I believe that matters most, though general accuracy is important too.

7:25 I believe that might be a bolt action Enfield m1917 rather than the M1 Garand. US marines were still using them on guadalcanal roughly around the same time as the campaign in North Africa, the garand didn’t become the standard battle rifle across all US units until 1943, a lot of guys still had holy actions until they reached mainland Europe

It's controversial because they rewrote history to serve a narrative, when they could have easily just told the story and still served the narrative just fine. It's an insult to the bravery of the men and women who actually fought this war. History wrote itself.

They're not given general standard US arms but instead during 1944, the Free French Forces was using a variety of small arms and most importantly, the Senegalese department of the FFF were using old WWI that many had still retained. The sthick of it was that unlike the regular French forces, these "Senegalese" were given pass-me-downs from WWI whereas the newer stuff went to the main French force on the mainland and it isn't rare to see troops using the Berthier rifles, Lebels and even Chauchats deep into 1945 as they retook France with the other allied forces and then push for the Rhine with said same weapons. Those weapons alone isn't what they had as they're supplemented by US arms too of course but that's how the FFF was made up of at that time. Misplaced and held-on WWI weaponry coupled with some newer WWII stuff like the FN-BAR, MAS 36, MAS 38 then next would be the US weaponry like the M1 Carbine, Garands, M2 Browning HMG, M1919 Browning and also the M1911 pistols. These array of weapons would also later on shape the Indochina Wars to come as the French, still in the midst of rebuilding, went there to take out the Communist threat and as they failed, the same array of mismatched weaponry would soon fall into the Viet Minh hands who became the North Vietnamese Army and together with the Viet Cong, took out both America AND the South with said mismatched armories. Exxxcept, the "company captain" would NOT go to battle with them. The captain at that point was the chief officer of the entire battalion and if he goes, he dies, no one else would be holding the strings of the HQ and the whole structure collapses. He won't be going to get shot obviously and with soo many officers already captured or have died in the battles between the invasion of France and then Bir Hakeim, they can't lose more ground officers with some invasion so he's staying in the HQ. Also, his 1940 uniform would still make sense depending on whether his official rank was given at when. If he's around and already a junior officer during the German offensive into France then I can see why he isn't donning US uniform but instead sticking to his 1930s French "Modele Aiglon". Most French officers that survived and lived to fight till 1945 actually never even switched to the US style of uniforms and these uniforms were also later seen being used back in Indochina by old officers. Charles de Gaulle also wore his till the end of the campaign and even wore his oftenly during national parades even when he's the PM of France. 22:29 That.... Isn't a Lee-Enfield but the Ross Rifle. Ross Rifle was a Canadian straight-pull bolt action rifle done by Charles Ross as a competition rifle at first which became a service rifle for the Canadians but it performed extremely poor despite having extreme accuracy against the other Entente rifles it went up against in WWI like the M1903, SMLE and the Lebel or even the Belgian Mauser Model 1889. It was soo bad that it's very sensitive to dust and dirt and very, Very, VERY prone to either jamming or just breaking apart. Soon, even the Canadians themselves gave up and clamoured for more SMLEs and even the P14 Enfield rifle which they themselves would totally bail on the Ross after just 2 years of frontline service and by 1916, fully equip themselves with SMLEs from then on till WWII. Ross rifle would still see limited use in WWII but being in frontline service just seems rather odd as they're mostly used for trainings by then and France did have a small number of Ross that was given to them during WWI after the Canadians "sent" (More like abandoned them to France cuz they want nothing to do with it) but by 1940 would either be destroyed or already in German hands thus having the Senegalese even having them would be odd as fuck as it shouldn't even be in their hands much less being involved in frontline service at all even. Also I would like to point out... ALL OF THEM HAD THE FUCKING WRONG RIFLE AS THEIR STANDARD! That's the Mannlicher M1895 and that itself is an Austrian weapon WHICH, should NOT even be in Allied hands by the masses. Both neither Austria nor Hungary was even in the Allied side of things and even having the French firing such weapon was hilarious as even if they could get the guns, where the hell are they gonna find the 8x50 or 8x56mm (That's a WWII conversion to Spitzer rounds) rounds to even fire the rifle for the whole Senegalese battalion? As said, SMLE would make sense or even the Lebel. M1895? What...

Thank you for restoring the truth ! It's true that France didn't treat fairly its colonial units (which btw were rarely only composed of indigenes), mostly after the war. But it wasn't out of sheer racism but more about refocusing on France and the Metropole, sadly the colonies didn't have the credit for what they did. An other thing is that the Germans created a myth about the brutality of the black soldiers during the occupation of Germany after WW1. Germans propagandists and politicians accused them of mass rapes etc etc. The UK, USA and France all conducted different investigations to see what was the problem. Turns out that German girls really liked black soldiers and Germans were pissed about getting cock blocked. And btw nice pronunciation, you are a native French speaker ?

I think they made the French uniforms blue because they think the players are to stupid to differentiate the French from the British. since France is not talked about that much in ww2 most amateur history fans think the French keept their uniform blue because of French pride. it's kinda stupid because all they have to do is make the uniform a bit more brown and it would be a little bit closer to historical accuracy

Analyse détaillée, nuancée, équitable. Merci.

If they wanted to do a story of racism in WWII it would have been really cool if they did something with the 442nd infantry division, which holds the title of the most decorated unit in American military history. I doubt many Americans realize that title belongs to a unit that was primarily Japanese-American, I mean most Americans are not knowledgeable on Asian American history in general. The campaign could've opened up with the Attack on Pearl Harbor and the wave of anti-Japanese sentiment that followed and then showed the protagonist being forced into an interment camp. I think the game's "soldiers fighting for a country that wants nothing to do with them" narrative would have worked much better in this case. I think back before this game released they said it would be the untold stories of WWII or something like that. The campaign for this game could've been so good, but they failed miserably.
