History Briefs: Clive of India

Robert Clive - known as Clive of India - was an untrained soldier yet a British General. He was largely responsible for British military supremacy on the sub-continent in the mid-18th century which, eventually led to India becoming a British colony. This is the story of how Clive defeated the French in India in order to establish British control. It includes his capture of Arcot, the relief of the Black Hole of Calcutta and his famous victory over the Nawab of Bengal at the Battle of Plassey.

Clive is my ancestor, I never knew about any of this. My mother said about seeing Indian antiques/atifacts in her grandmother's house. Ivory elephants and such. Crazy.

Robert Clive was born in my hometown, market Drayton, in Shropshire. He was a little thug who terrorised the whole town. The magistrates were sick of him and told him to leave the area or he would be jailed

As a general he settled India into a reasonably stable business society and if he thereby gained personal wealth. Only jealous opponents tried to belittle. Why on earth would turn down wealth

Essentially he created a system that made Britain a very wealthy country. So perhaps British people should not complain too much as we have all been beneficiaries one way or another.
