I love the whole idea behind the Bat signal. A rookie cop asks Gordon why they bother with the signal, aren’t there easier and faster ways to contact the Batman? Jim tells him that of course there are faster better ways to contact Batman, but the signal isn’t as much to call Batman, it’s for everyone else in Gotham. The real important thing is not the not killing rule, but the not killing JOKER rule. No Batman has ever killed a Joker, wether that be from sheer will power, or because that’s your fucking wife. And you may say that The Batman Who Laughed proves the rule wrong, but when you think about it, that Joker never really died. He just lived on through Bruce’s body, carrying out his sadistic dreams, with nobody to stop him. And Batman knew this was a possibility, but was to blinded with rage to realize. And think about it: whenever a Joker died, Batman is the one who always carries the guilt, even when the Joker kills himself.

Not Really. The whole movie is about batman crossing his own lines and becoming more and more brutal. The Comics did the same thing. It's not like he likes to do it like in the Burton movies. Would he be able to crash cars that shoot at him without the risk of killing somebody? No. In the dark knight, batman flips a Truck with people inside of it. Could that have killed everybody inside? YES. Did one if the SWAT guys at the end get his body crushed by batman and got left ha ging at the side of a building and probably DIE? Yes, no doubt. Do Fans realise that? NO. I dont really see the problem people have with the movie. Batfleck just didnt give a fuck anymore after years of being pushed to the edge. Is that unrealistic? No. Are Fans too stupid to realise? Yes 100%.

Putting good men in extremely difficult circumstances, and watching them somehow preserve their soul - despite their flaws - makes for great storytelling. EDIT: A lot of moral arguments in the commments, but I'm referring to storytelling in general. Bottom line: Killing would be a violation of Batman's conscious. Thats his conviction - without it - he is far less unique and interesting.

@captainrick4513 Жыл бұрын
@@JDoe-gf5oz No... I see a different meaning. Killing a life, to save a life... doesn't make you a villain. Your hands are tainted, but your soul only becomes tainted if you choose killing as your first option. It is a last resort that is never to be considered until everything else has failed. Some foes... can't be reasoned with, it is not wrong to fight or kill for the sake of protecting the lives of others. Your soul only becomes tainted if you let yourself enjoy taking the life of another, even if they were a monster incapable of redemption. Look at Superman vs Zod in Man of Steel. He killed Zod, saving people's lives, but he didn't rejoice over his death, his soul remained pure for the mere fact that he felt guilt for taking a life.

The scene in Iron Man you showed works for Tony's character because he specifically targeted the terrorists in the least destructive way he could. He was blowing shit up, sending people flying, but the moment doing that would put an innocent in harms way, he switches to the homing weapon and they just silently drop at the same time, leaving the civilians unharmed, because he WAS that civilian, he doesn't want to hurt people that suffered and are suffering like he suffered, he wants to hurt the people causing it. With the Batman v Superman scene, not only does it fly in the face of the No Kill Rule, it also endangers anybody who might be around. He uses a fucking minigun to set a van on fire and then runs it over, blowing it up in the process. Where did the bullets go? Where did the shrapnel go? Probably a bystander who couldn't get away while this was happening. That batman isn't a hero, that batman is the worst kind of vigilante: A man who not only flies in the face of the law, but endangers the innocents he supposedly protects through his attempts to keep them safe. Setting off a pipe bomb in the mailbox of the local pedophile is going to hurt the neighbors as well.

Some of what you’re saying isn’t true AT ALL here. I disagree MASSIVELY that BvS Batman isn’t a “hero”, he STILL is a hero but a very problematic one that arguably is not the best plenty out there. Batman uses explosives and blows things up as well and is STILL massively degraded as a hero. But when Batman uses his explosives to blow things up, he’s not endangering any innocent people’s lives AT ALL. That’s what any good hero needs to do. What you’re saying about any innocent bystanders getting caught in the process of any bullets and shrapnels of when Batman uses his mini gun to blow up the van, what you’re saying is a bunch of “what if scenarios” that really aren’t valid. Yes the mini gun is reckless but you can go into “what if” scenarios all day and it still won’t get you anywhere because you’re imagining things hypothetically without any concrete evidence for as you can mindlessly say that for ANY scar too for when a superhero does anything which is completely unfair and invalid to say when there’s clearly no evidence to back it up. Especially in that scene where the warehouse was in abandoned neighborhood with NO ONE else is located other than the thugs and goons Batman is there to take out. The problem with the BvS Van scene was that it was unnecessary violence ALL for the sake of visual spectacle. Which Snyder is guilty of doing. Batman could have easily taken down that van down without having to kill anyone at all in the process. The Ironman killing people is the thing that you’re right in saying because Ironman is willing to kill people and he doesn’t have a no kill rule but he’s willing to kill to save innocents and not in a super destructive way as he killed those terrorist in a very subtle quiet manner without putting anyone in harm’s way. Unlike in BvS where you have Batman seemingly willing not really willing to care about who he destroys in the process which IS problematic but more importantly, Batman didn’t need to kill ANYONE in that movie AT ALL.

+Alex Wade Choosing not to help someone isn't the same as killing them. Leaving someone to their own devices is not the same as ending them. Walking away isn't the same as murder. Thousands of people are killed worldwide at this very moment, and yet we (you, me, cousin Tom and Lisa next door) are not doing anything about it, are we killing them? Is that the same as killing them? Sure we can't help all of them, but we could choose to even help just one, yet we aren't even trying to find out who we can help; whose death could we prevent if instead of watching youtube videos we went out and saved someone. For whatever reason we are making a choice not to, and that doesn't make us killers. We just deem it's not worth the trouble, not worth sacrificing ourselves, not worth our time nor our comfort. We aren't even trying (giving money to charity is just a way of bribing one's own guilt) I know this is a shitty thing to say, but it still doesn't change the fact that we aren't trying everything we can - and that is something we have to come to terms within ourselves. Everything in life is a trade off, with what choices are you willing to live with? Is someone else's time more important to you than your own? These are the questions everyone should be asking themselves. So if someone has a moral stance of not killing, it isn't an obligation to save everyone.
@keitholsen94356 жыл бұрын
Kingdom Come is one of my favourite comics. And i really like that Batman doesn't kill too. It's just that when he does kill, it's interesting to see what pushed him over the edge. And how in the end he became good again. Or how maybe in this universe, he never becomes good. The reason why Kingdom Come and many other comics are popular, is because the writers have liberty to deconstruct characters..just like in The Dark Knight Returns, where Batman kills. Saying that Batman should never kill, is denying Batman the story arcs that have been so important to his character, that reinforces why he should not kill. It's like saying Batman can never fail.

That first line is probably my favorite Batman quote. To me at least, it illustrates the guilt and devastation of letting Joker live all those years, only for him to repeatedly escape and kill innocents. Imagine that crushing feeling of repeatedly putting Joker and other psychos in a cell for all those years; but only to realize you made virtually no positive impact on Gotham, while crime & murder is still rampant and all that work was for nothing. By letting Joker live all those years due to Batman’s self-righteous moralist “no kill policy”, Batman is just as much responsible as for the demise of many innocent lives as Joker. His no kill policy actually killed more innocents than if he killed one villain, thus preventing the demise of many innocents.

Orry Maine. I agree completely. I use Marvel Unlimited to read comics (which I am still a newb at) and I prefer Marvel over DC. But my favorite hero overall is Batman. Since every Batman comic I read has to be bought separately, I was looking for a Marvel character that would scratch my Batman-itch. I like Daredevil because he has a lot of the characteristics that make me enjoy Batman (e.g. the detective aspect). So he has a lot of similarities to Batman in crucial areas but is still very much his own character and not just a Batman ripoff. And then he also is more Marvel-ish (more normal and human) and integrates into my preferred superhero universe.

Batman's "no-kill" rule is what causes the symbol of the bat, a symbol that Bruce made to strike fear into the hearts of criminals, to be a symbol of hope and pure willpower. The no-kill rule has even caused character development to members of the Bat-family, especially Jason Todd and Cassandra Cain. Jason grew to be the man Batman could never be, the man who doesn't mind killing, all due to batman never killing the Joker to avenge him. Cassandra was raised to be the best assassin in DC's history, but she was inspired by what she calls the symbol of the bat and the no-killing rule, making her into living proof that Batman can inspire people to do good. This is how integral the "no-killing" rule is: It is not only batman's moral code, but it is integral in his story and character, It is what truly contextualized the symbol of the Bat, and most importantly, it is what makes Batman a hero. Thanks to all who read my ramblings.

Actually its easier not to kill. In comics usually hero portrayed as there is always some way of not to kill, and ofc hero will always make this choice. To develop a character you need to place him in situation when there is no easy alternate solution of not killing. Like for example in Man of Steel's Zod killing scene. There is no easy exits provided by story. You have 2 options - to kill and save or not to kill and "kill" even more. That's main problem with comics. Poor story writers always leave exits for heroes providing not kill option. And its easy choice in that kind of situations.

People often forget that Batman is, first and foremost, not an police officer or any kind of authority figure with official jurisdiction to enact judgement upon others. He participates in vigilantism, which in itself is illegal. Not to mention, he breaks the law constantly: speeding, damaging public property, resisting arrest, assaulting other people (even IF they are criminals)...just to name a few. His criminal record is probably as vast as that of his rogues' gallery. And yet, the GCPD tolerates Batman's activities. In some cases, they even cooperate with him. Why? Because, ultimately, he fights to uphold the law and bring criminals to justice. Yes, he doesn't always uphold the rules himself, but in order to be effective and supportive to the GCPD, he has to be somewhat outside of the law. But...he never takes the role of Judge, Jury and Executioner into his own hands. Batman has become a symbol of justice, not vengeance. If he were to kill criminals, then the public and the GCPD would regard him as a criminal too, because he does not have the right to take away another person's life. Not to mention, as a symbol, Batman would be sending the wrong message - that it's ok for ordinary citizens to ignore the legal system and take the law into their own hands. And such a mindset can be very dangerous to adopt for a place like Gotham, which is always edging on the verge of societal breakdown. I also want to address one thing that a lot of people keep bringing up against Batman and that's him not killing criminals, because they always break out of prison anyway. Well, It's not his fault - it's the fault of the institutions that house them. If a criminal was apprehended by your typical police officer, and that criminal escaped a month later, would you blame that same police officer for not killing the criminal?

In Batman Beyond Bruce got a new enhanced bat suit because of his old age but isn’t able to defeat a couple of criminals so when the goon almost kills him, Batman threatens the criminal with a gun to scare him off, gets PTSD, and hangs the bat suit in the bat cave saying ‘Never Again’, permanently retiring from being Batman. After that he reluctantly lets Terry McGinnis be the new Batman. Just holding a gun traumatised Bruce Wayne into giving up Batman. I think that might have summarised the video.

@Brandon AdamIf we're being honest about it, the real reason DC heroes generally don't kill has nothing to do with their personalities (and the debatable actual efficacy/complications of that rule) or anything like that. It's' because DC doesn't want to kill off popular villains, since they can save them for more stories that way. IIRC, that was explicitly laid out as a directive decades ago and they've mostly adhered to that ever since. It's a business decision.

@soraceant6 жыл бұрын
@@SA80TAGE why exactly do you guys even have an issue with this at all? Batman doesn't kill people unless the writer or director feels like changing it. It has more to do with inconsistent writing or changing writers than anything else. DC wanted an edgey Batman so now he kills. If they wanted moral Batman he'd be moral. The idea that Batman doesn't kill depends on who's writing the story. Although when I play games like Arkham Knight and I run over someone at full speed with the batcar I like to say in my mind that Batman doesn't kill people.
@SA80TAGE6 жыл бұрын
Because people who claim to be "fans" only ever focus on cartoons made for kids with one-dimensional cardboard cutouts of the characters. Man of Steel for example was an adaptation of Superman: Earth One, a story where Clark is more than just a smile in a costume, they treat him like an actual character who has emotions who isn't always sure of himself, rather than the one-note "ideal" know-it-all with all the right moral answers. One big "criticism" of MoS was that "he didn't smile enough"... he smiled exactly as much as he needed to, I mean, he's supposed to smile while the entire world is being threatened with thousands of people dying? No. He smiles when appropriate. For BvS it was that "Supes and Bats should be best friends"... aye, AFTER they've known each other for a while and had time to build a bond, any comic reader will tell you that they always fight the "first time they meet" after any reboot. The whole idea of Batman becoming cruel and brutal was part of his arc too, Supermans sacrifice was supposed to mean something not just an audience, but to Bruce himself... that was supposed to be the catalyst for his change, hence his speech at the end about being "better". You're right about differing writers, but what makes the cartoon anymore valid than any of the comics? How can anyone claiming to be a fan ignore the actual source material? Superman has killed Zod in the comics more times than I can remember, both directly and indirectly, but he does it in a modern movie and it's "wah that's not the Superman I know".... well it IS the Superman I know. Yes, Batman is better when he's staunchly against killing, but that hasn't always been the case. He was originally designed as something more akin to Punisher, killing bad guys with impunity, and despite popular belief, that lasted for a lot longer than just his first few issues. Technically speaking, Batman was a killer for WAY longer than not. You can't just simply ignore that for convenience and personal preference. That history exists in print, and it isn't going anywhere.
@rodolfoxviii48055 жыл бұрын
Batman not killing is the whole reason why a story like The Killing Joke works so well, it plays off that aspect of batman, perfectly encompassing the moral dilema that Bruce faces every time he dawns the bat suit. The story shows whats is like to be challenged to the point of considering letting go of you moral principles to fulfill desire, a desire based on pure grief and hatred. The ending leaves the reader to decide what happened, it may change depending on the way you perceive Batman.

Bravo. Thats why i think Christoper Nolans The Dark knight trilogy is the only one who will ever bring Batman justice but also us fans. In the scene where Bruce and Ras al ghoul is talking, Ras tells bruce the following: "Your compassion is a weakness your enemies will not share". Which Bruce replies to with: "Thats why its so important. It separates us from them"
@EN_024 жыл бұрын
That's the point of Afflecks Batman, he spent 20 years in Gotham, he lost hope, has lost EVERYTHING that makes him what he is, that makes him The BATMAN we know. Nolans Batman has always had hope, he had a lot of hope, but Afflecks Batman has lost that, he doesn't believe in mankind anymore. After 20 YEARS he realized that (as he says in the movie) "criminals are like weeds, pull one up another grows in its place", but at the end of the movie Supermans death gives him hope again, think about what he said to Wonder Woman, when she said that Men have created a world where staying together is impossible but then he says "men are still good" (i'm not sure he'd have said the same thing at the beginning of the movie). And then he finally returns the Batman we know, so i think that he's had a very interesting evolution, something different and cool to see. That said, i also do not believe Batman should kill, cuz that's what makes him special and interesting, but with Afflecks version that was the point, in 20 years he had lost hope and started killing criminals and lost himself and what makes Batman special and interesting and Superman (who represents HOPE) gives him hope again

@@EN_02 In the Dark Knight Returns Bruce is an old grumpy man who has lost hope as you've described but he didn't kill anyone. Batfleck losing "hope" doesn't mean he needs or has to kill. What makes Batman or Superman or Daredevil or Spider-Man compelling characters are their will of never crossing THE line, the line that Zack Snyder's Batman fucking crossed, THE line that keeps them and their mentality in check.

For a short time I thought batman should be more brutal. But than I watched the BTAS ''Baby Doll'' episode. And in the end of that episode, she is surrounded by giant Mirrors and has a break down. Batman doesn't punch her in the Face. Instead he's just standing behind her as she is crying. And the episode ends. That little moment showed me what batman was all about. He really isn't supposed to be a one sided character who just shoots villians in the head. He's more than that. A Bat Creature, who watches over Gotham City. Who protects the innocent from the evil . And the evil from themselves, by capturing them and putting them to Arkham where they belong. He is a part of Gotham and Gotham a part of him. It's as if Gotham itself choosed him to be the protector by killing his parents.

Ernesto Personne That was one of my favorite things about Batman TAS. The villains felt so much like real people. There were so many episodes where it would take place from their perspectives and show us so much about their backstories and how they interact with normal people. The show does a great job of making you feel bad for these characters.

Superman called out martha for trying to save someone's else's life with his dying breath. That's exactly what Thomas Wayne did with his dying breath. That's what changes Batman's point of view about sups. Throughout the movie, batman is shown going crazy, killing people here and there, suffering from world ending nightmares etc. He also feels that sups is an alien who can go bad and take over the world. That is what changes when superman tries to save someone else's life with his last words. That humanises Superman in Batman's eyes . It has nothing to do with the word martha. It's just a coincidence that makes batman hesitate for one small second. And also, batman stops killing when he sees Superman sacrificing himself to save earth. That sparks HOPE in his mind and it changes him. He stops killing as his faith in humanity gets restored. Proof for this is his last speech and him not killing or branding Luthor. Now i want to see a comeback for that. Btw Christopher Nolan says that Snyder takes the most realistic interpretation of characters possible and that's what he did. He also pays a hell lot of attention in visual filmmaking and storytelling. You can see the story rather than hear it.

Batman views all human life as sacred. Everyone has a family, everyone could have a child, and killing that person removes any chance for a goodbye, or for a happy child, or for anything. Red Hood never found human life sacred like Batman, he only sees the kill count, so he only sees a killer. Red Hood doesn’t see Deadshot as a man with a daughter he’s trying to protect and raise, Batman does

I love how Arkham Knight tries to convince me that Batman didn't just kill the thug he plowed into an electrical box headfirst, hit with the Batmobile at bone-crushing speeds, or who's vehicle was smashed into the façade of a concrete capital building. I feel like Alfred just hacks his cowl to say "incapacitated" to spare his ego.

There's only one time I can think of where Batman killing was not only done well, but remained 100% true to his character; in one of the Injustice comics, we got to see an alternate take on the story where Joker's plan to break Superman failed and Batman drove him to the GCPD alone. Joker, true to his nature, suggested that he'd try again once Superman's infant was born - prompting Batman to suddenly snap Joker's neck right there in the batmobile. And what's the first thing he does after murdering his worst enemy? He unmasks and turns himself in to the police, willingly serving time in prison even after Superman offers to set him free. If that is not pure Batman, I don't know what is.
