Hum, I have feeling either way. I wish they just keep them running during the transition to F35's. They would have two operational ships right now. One with 18 Harriers and the other with 18 F35's. It also would have keep training levels top notch. In other words, in a moments notice, they could field two such ships in a emergency. And Britain now does have 18 F35's. Between F35's and a flock of Harriers, they would have right now a VERY impressive air power ability for their Navy. And in a pinch deploy the two carriers.

Should have been named HMS Duke of Edinburgh but I am sure there will be a Royal Navy ship soon to honour that esteemed title as there was a long time ago
@ThePalaeontologist
@ThePalaeontologist 3 жыл бұрын
I totally agree, though the thought occurred to me that the _Duke_-class (Type 23) Frigates, to some extent are still around and shall still be going strong for many years to come, until fully phased-out by the Type 26 and Type 31e. I'm wondering though, do you think they should continue the _Duke_-class naming convention and roll it over into the as yet unnamed Type 31e's (rather small for a title so grand as the Duke of Edinburgh; which you'd expect for something like one of these carriers as you say) _or_ should it be reserved for a special, one off ship, just later down the line? There is the mysterious (probably special mission/minesweeper Type 31e hull spin off, of the Type 32, but I doubt they'll be what would really be worthy of 'Duke of Edinburgh' either in this context, with recent events in mind) I think folk would want to save that name for something special. The next thought was of the Type 83 Destroyer apparently in the works conceptually. Those are supposed to be huge and if they are going to be replacing the Type 45 Destroyers/ _Daring_-class Destroyers, then the naming convention could perhaps be overlooked for at least the first ship in class? The _Duke_-class Type 23's slightly complicate this because I'd expect them to move up the alphabet as they tend to when naming ships. However, in the long history of the Royal Navy (>500 years) there have been many forms of naming conventions, for many types of warship. The way ships are usually named in the 21st century doesn't have to be considered 'the only way' so to speak. The _Dreadnought_-class Nuclear Strategic Submarines have names which are all over the place compared to the alphabetically astute _Astute_-class, constantly repeating the use of 'A' in the first letter of the name. Maybe HMS _Duke of Edinburgh_ would have fit in better with the other names in the _Dreadnought_-class, but they've all (all four of them) been named now so it's too late. Considering HMS _King George VI_ is the name of one of that class, alongside Dreadnought, Warspite and Valiant, I reckon _Duke of Edinburgh_ would be very appropriate considering his connection with King George VI through Queen Elizabeth II retrospectively of course, and it was George VI's Royal Navy he was serving in throughout WWII. I dare say if he'd passed away a few years back maybe people would have wanted one of those submarines to be named after him. What would they name HMS _Duke of Edinburgh_ with those complications in mind? Maybe some kind of amphibious assault ship of the future, or a future line of cruisers or something? Tried to work this one out but the Type 23 thing threw me a bit because that kind of makes you think they _have_ to move on past using that word 'Duke' specifically. In the Age of Sail once an individual ship with a particular name had been decommissioned, the name was "freed up" and they'd often rapidly rename the older ship something else while used as a hulk/block ship/prison hulk/guard ship/training ship/tender/or just in some mothballed state etc etc and give the more valued and desired name to some new ship. Maybe when the last Type 23 is decommissioned, they could just rename the very first Type 83 HMS _Duke of Edinburgh_ as I say, and having freed up the naming convention of 'Duke', even if the rest of the class has _nothing_ to do with names resembling 'Duke of...' etc. I'd prefer to call the Type 83 Destroyers something beginning with 'C', as a convention, because Type 82 HMS _Bristol_ was obviously 'B' for Bristol, and a one-off herself. Maybe I'm missing something here and apologies if I have the naming conventions muddled or in the wrong order. Another way of looking at it is that the last Type 26 _City_-class frigate is supposed to be called HMS _Edinburgh_ specifically referring to the city, but she won't be in service for a long while to come. This also makes me think HMS _Duke of Edinburgh_ is kind of unlikely because it not only clashes with the _Duke_-class Type 23's but also sounds really too similar to HMS _Edinburgh_ and it would be odd to have both names active at the same time. Stranger things have happened in the long history of the Royal Navy, but I'd say people would get confused between them. Maybe HMS _Edinburgh_ would just pay heavy tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh but I think by then it'd be like the late 2020's or something. P.S - if only it were possible, a third British carrier named HMS _Duke of Edinburgh_ would solve the entire issue and even if it shared the seas with HMS _Edinburgh_ of the Type 26 Frigates, it'd be big enough to simply be too iconic to mix up. Alas, if it were possible (I know most would say a third British carrier these days is impossible due to the way things are but yeah, theoretically it would perfectly fit in alongside _Queen Elizabeth_ and _Prince of Wales_ as a regal sounding title) However, another issue with that is that hands down, any theoretical third UK carrier, should automatically just get the name HMS _Ark Royal_ as it really should and as it is generally most popular I think. Of course there is still some debate over whether HMS _Prince of Wales_ was the best name for the 2nd carrier, and it has had some criticism, though the thing I always remind myself is that it is extremely fitting that we now have an aircraft carrier named after a WWII Battleship of the same name, which was tragically lost to aerial attack. For that reason alone, out of sheer respect, I like the name (but the whole connection drawn to Prince Charles which is often made, doesn't matter as much to me, simply respecting that legacy of the WWII Battleship instead) HMS _Ark Royal_ should be the next British carrier named I'm sure would be popular. That said, I wish they'd call an entire future carrier class, the _Eclipse_-class to really go all space age.

@ThePalaeontologist
@ThePalaeontologist 3 жыл бұрын
@@KumaBean Unfortunately I had to like your comment as I want show I agree with your sentiment, and agree it would be wrong on basic principle. However, I must say that superficially, the £200 million on a Royal Yacht sounds bad but tbh it does have it's uses and could help fly the flag for Global Britain. If they are smart and do build the thing a few years down the line (not right now) then it should be used largely in Royal duties (not just for jollies) and be a major ambassadorial hub for the UK. Like, hosting international dignitaries and the like. It would pay for itself that way. Yet you should be more angry with HS2. The government is throwing over ~110 Billion pounds (it might end up being far, far higher) at that but won't fully-fund veterans care and build *enshrined by law* accommodation fit for heroes. I don't mean the hit and miss looking attempts at housing for veterans the government has built. I don't like the look of a lot of new builds in general (toy town level stuff, sloppy, I've seen them going up round my region) It is very sad. The architecture of today is a bit rubbish a lot of the time. Veterans should have it all legally granted with even better pensions. They earn it. It boils my piss seeing how half-arsed the government is over veteran issues it's sickening.

Graf Spee didn’t have enough fuel to reach a friendly port, so even if it survived the encounter with the cruisers you mention, the RN would have searched the Atlantic with battle cruisers, carrier’s and anything else they could send, as they did after Hood was sunk the following year, that’s probably why it was scuttled, to save the crew from the fate would later befall other KMS ships during the war.

I guess this isn't happening but is HMS _Prince of Wales_ going to join the carrier group up in Scotland for the next two weeks or so? HMS _Queen Elizabeth_ is heading up there on exercises prior to her 8 month overseas deployment all over the world with CSG21. The voyage which will take her through the South China Sea en route to Japan, stopping at so many countries along the way, including India. Though I don't think HMS _Prince of Wales_ would or even should go with them, I merely wonder though, if getting some photo opportunities and training in up in Scotland is reasonable or is that too soon for R09 currently? Stopping up in Scotland for a couple of weeks with the rest of the fleet and then returning to Portsmouth on the way back down would be interesting and make use of the opportunity. Seems a shame to let it go to waste.

@ThePalaeontologist
@ThePalaeontologist 3 жыл бұрын
@@spitfire8790 Yes I know but that wasn't that recent; 10th December 2019. That's old news now dude. Not sure what it has to do with what I said other than, well, the development of a working air wing takes a lot of time and even the nearly 17 months since she was commissioned (minus about a week and a bit) was not _super_ long ago in the development process. It was a while back now though and HMS _Prince of Wales_ is much, much further along. Not quite as ready for proper deployments and potential action as HMS _Queen Elizabeth_ but nearly. The water flooding issues have been fully dealt with I think but these have delayed when HMS _Prince of Wales_ shall be completely ready, by months. Hopefully she'll be as prepared as HMS _Queen Elizabeth_ is within the next 12 months or so (?) I think they've put all 3 of the Phalanx CIWS on R09 now and they've done just about everything else except get the airwings on but that is a matter of waiting for the rest of the F-35's to be ready too (and the pilots trained for them) So it's going to take a while. Apparently, in 2020, R08 was at sea for 115 days but R09 was only out for 30 days, due to those water leaks and floods. Not sure how that correlates but I'm guessing that's set her back at least 2 months ish behind schedule but they might have made up for it somehow. She's ahead of schedule in some ways, because of lessons and efficiency savings learnt on HMS _Queen Elizabeth_ ironing out and finding problems for HMS _Prince of Wales_ to avoid (sadly the flooding situation happened to both; seems a common issue with a lot of ships but it cost several million pounds of damage to R09 the second and hopefully last time she flooded a few months back) She left Portsmouth on 30th April 2021 for training exercises (HMS _Prince of Wales_ that is) HMS _Queen Elizabeth_ left yesterday 1st May 2021 to go to Scotland for 2 weeks for going on her 8 month deployment.

There's an argument for a lot of little ones. This size was chosen to provide a decent attack and defence at the same time. You could do the same with multiple smaller ones but your duplicate things which is waste. There also things where a large deck helps, like the rolling landing.

First carrier was called Queen Elizabeth, second Prince of Wales. Why wasn't the second named Prince Charles?
@markturner4219
@markturner4219 3 жыл бұрын
Because first carrier isn"t named for this queen elizabeth, but for queen elizaneth the first (via the battleship of that name). The second carrier is named Prince of Wales whiich is a generic name was first used to name a ship for George III 's eldest son, Prince George Augustus Frederick - later George IV. This name has then passed down through 8 ships to the current holder.
