Its looking great! Well done! A suggestion for the wigs, boas etc that you don't use every day might be to have a celebration or party section in your basement for fancy dress. So your main closet is things you and hubby would reach for day to day and will open up space 🙂

By the way, a great way to keep your boas is inside a big plastic zip lock bag. I keep mine this way. You put them in, and then squish the bag so the air is expelled, and then zip it up! This makes the bag as flat as possible, because well.. feather boas take up a lot of space with all that air!

Add your summer shoes to the summer clothes bin. That will make room for hubby's shoes. When warmer weather comes and you put away your fall/winter clothes, put away your shoes/boots to make room for your summer shoes. This way everything in the closet is an option to wear and you don't have to overlook and move the out of season items.

Maybe a clear plastic over-the-door shoe organizer inside the closet door would allow you to store ALL of your flip flops. This could help to free up the space on the closet shelves for Mr. Heart if you can move your boots that are still in boxes to the existing white shoe organizers. Cutting foam pool noodles to size will also help keep your boots standing upright! Great job today! 👏🏼❤

Just a thought...you had what looked like some makeup bags with tags still on them...would it make it easier for you to let them go if they went in an operation Christmas child shoebox? so many boxes are filled for little kids because they are so much fun to shop for ... but the greatest need is for boxes packed for older girls and (especially) older boys (Source: a friend from my church went to college with someone who helps oversee this project at Samaritan's purse. She called him when our mom's group was putting boxes together a couple of years ago and that is what she was told). Can you imagine how excited a tween girl would be to find a makeup zipper bag in her box to keep her treasures clean and collected?

YES, I WOULD ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO SEE MORE CRAFTING VIDEOS 😍😍 Using things you already have though! Forget No Spend as a reason for a sec... your bins are FAB! 💖 Yours are custom made to fit (dimensions AND decor) and so much nicer and possibly more functional, too!Organising bins are expensive! If you’re that talented and have the resources already (which we both probably do! Aha) why not have some fun and shop your stuff? Using things you have isn’t limiting at all... in fact, for me at least, the “limit” on using what I already have usually means it unlocks creativity even more :D thrill of the hunt, too! On the rare occasions I do complete a project, it’s so rewarding actually doing something with the things I have - not to “justify” the craft hoard, but to satisfy my need to repurpose and fix things and keep them from the bin AND use them! It keeps me calm, and it’s easier to identify the projects I realistically keep putting off and will never “get around to” and let them go. Sorry for the waffle! I’d just be super excited to see what sorts to things you’d make, and what projects might be rekindled and bought to life... as you obviously have had some amazing ideas when you brought the crafting supplies into you home 💕 (plus, videos take time AND you like crafting - videoing crafting you’d like to spend time doing anyway could free up more time for family :) )

I have a few comments that might be helpful: 1. I would put the make-up bags into your bathroom as it is where you keep your toiletries and it will where you need. Maybe put two or three sizes there that you use regularly and put the rest with your luggage. 2. Sentimental stuff are not clothes and should probably not be in the closet. Have you considered putting them with the other sentimental stuff in the basement. 3. You seem to only have 3 or 4 bags. The box seems a bit overkill and makes them very difficult to access. There are special hangars for belts that might take up less room. 4. Have you gone through the dresser underneath the TV. Maybe you can make some space there as well to move some of the sweatshirts there. 5. The garden flags should probably either go in the shed or into your front closet.
@shelleys226

Agreed but I suggest the bags don’t go in the bathroom. Instead store them inside of the suitcases! I keep all my travel stuff in my suitcase:neck pillow, noise cancelling headphones, travel makeup bags, etc.

Hey Ms Heart. I find it makes a lot of difference to show shoes from both sides. Put one shoe in with the heel to the wall, the other next to it with toes to the wall. Safes space and looks really nice I find. Especially with heels

For a normal Person No, for a Person with hoardering disorder, yes (somewhat) People dont Just keep tons of Stuff for the fun of it, be because of trama. If you were to Clean Out any hoarder House, they would start hoardering more, even If a minimalistic House is easier to upkeep. I Like to think of hoardering disorder Like a eating disorder. Something Happens and a Person could Start eating was too much, become overweight. Even If the Person wants to lose Wright, that can only Happen If the trama ist healed First, or they will Always come Back to eating because it makes them Happy. Mrs. Heart is taking her time to heal, wo she does Not have any setbacks and little by little, she will get There. Slow and steady wins the race

Every single item was so very important to you the first go round, but just know this: each item you took out today was not a loss for you but a victory! Every single one. For the items that you only wear for holidays, parades, etc. could those go in the basement with decorations and party supplies? A thought to take or leave - things you won't reach for soon, wigs and going out accessories for fun, put on the higher shelf leaving room that's easier to reach as needed. I did this recently, as my closet was visually driving me nuts. Turns out a little symmetry didn't hurt either :) Now, my low-spend challenge has also developed into a get rid of something every day challenge. It's pretty easy even if it's just dealing with the day's mail. It counts!

I think you did an amazing job! This is a good size closet and you are doing a great job keeping it tidy and organized. I would make a seasonal shoe bin in the basement and put all the flip flops and sandals in there. Maybe even a dressy shoe bin as well. Only keep the winter boots and shoes in there for now. Switch out seasonally. Also the makeup bags, I would consider what do you use them for. If for travel, put them with your suitcases, if you use some as organization for your purse put them in the purse bin. If you use some for makeup then put them in bathroom with makeup. I would save space by putting the belts with the hats. As for the photos, make that a priority to condense or move them to over sentimental area. The sweatshirts are bulky but honestly they belong in there so I would consider if possible to make space in your dresser? If not I would consider what isn’t used all the time and move that out but keep the clothes in there. Maybe your dress up stuff could find a new home? Since it is 3 bins and not used all the time. Just some suggestions but want to reiterate that you are doing amazing!!!! And I’m sure as you keep going you will find more ways to improve even more.

I keep one make up travel bag in the bathroom for short 1 day events etc, and I've put the rest with luggage. I struggled SO MUCH with it at first, because I wanted them all to be together, but sometimes you need ONE bag to put the sunblock in, or for a wedding touch up kit or whatever. And I don't want to go into the attic for that!! But once I split them up, I felt so relieved!

if you put one shoe facing the front (just like you did) and its pair facing the back of the closet (like, if you open the closet, you'll see the front of one shoe and the heel of its pair), you can fit more shoes (or get more space between one pair and another, to better the flow) saw this on a tv show and it really helped me to organize (:

I would def nudge you to only keep clothes you actually wear frequently inside your closet. If you don't wear it at least 30 times a year, store it elsewhere! Costumes, sentimental items, etc. can go into one big tub in the basement with seasonal items. It could help you have a little breathing room in the closet, and get closer to 50/50 split with hubby :) I think the black hanging organizer actually creates a nice visual barrier to divide space for each of you. Well done on the labeling!!!

As a former hoarder I have something for you to think about. When you are decluttering you have the tendency to say you have an attachment or not with the item and therefore will let it go or not. Maybe for taking the next step; does an attachment really have to mean you have to keep it? If you have / had an attachment it is okay to say goodbye as well. As a hoarder I had an attachment with every single item in my house. Acknowledging I had an attachment but still giving myself permission to let it go, helped me big time! Felt like making a conscious decision between freeing up space, healing and holding on to old ways. Maybe it can help you to. ❤️

Bravo, Ms. Heart, on decluttering/organizing AND sticking to your no-spend challenge! 👏👏👏 🦄 For the cosmetic bags, if you are keeping them for sentimental rather than practical reasons (eg you need some of them when you travel by car and others when you fly) you could use the extras for small items when you organize your craft space. Re paint colour, this is not a grey, but we used Moonlight White by Benjamin Moore in a dark room and it brightened the space enormously. Their Aura paint is low voc, so less odour with great coverage. A bit $, though. Ooh, see if you can get sponsored! SOMEONE’S got to want to advertise paint to a bunch of viewers interested in organizing their homes! Good luck with your renovation! 👏🦄🌈💙

In every closet in my home I have cube shelves turned sideways so they’re 2 cubes high and 8 or 10 wide and I use them as “mini” dressers and storage for the bottom of my closets. I can leave it open and fold Konmari, put shoes on them, or put the stuff in bins in them. It really adds a lot of extra space for closets and I’d highly recommend it!! ALSO- my favorite gray color is Gray Owl by Benjamin Moore. It doesn’t turn purple, blue, or green in different lighting. The perfect shade!! (Warning tho- it looks white going on but darkens to the right color 😂) You can also get it mixed at Home Depot they always have it on file 👍🏼😊

YUP, NCDESMO! Mrs. Heart, I do this, and it saves tons of space. First, full disclosure. I have my bed on risers, and I can fit taller boxes and bins (even stacked) under them. So, I put my off season boots, loafers, etc in a roadside recycled dresser drawer under the bed. Then, I switch out with sandals In the spring. Maybe try this under hubbies side of the bed for both of your seasonal switches. Bins like you have already will work, or contact paper some shipping boxes likewise in size. Clean and polish, and scotchgard the shoes (purses, too), and cover with a towel to keep them dust free and ready for a new life next season. Also, Konmari style "file" your flipflops paired and standing up on their sides. They'll maybe even get close to tripleing the space if you think tall rather than wide. Also, so glad how hubbies side looks. Maybe try to move your small bags into the large colorful purse storage bag. Consolidate the hair and headbands, and dress up into one box. YES, as someone said, zip lock bag the fluffy boas ... saves so much space and actually preserves them better. Then, GIVE HIM THE TOP ON HIS SIDE! LOL! Bless him! He deserves it as hard as he works! Maybe both of you could use the storage tower hanger for sweatshirts to meet in the middle. Those drawers in the hanger look annoying to open and close, and they will wear out the top velcro pieces on the hanging rod if you yank on them too much (know this from experience :( ). Let him have those for his hats, etc. on his above shelves. :) and give him storage space for his pieces. Y'all are are so blessed with a beautiful home. I love all you are doing! You inspire me beyond words!

I totally understand your fear of moisture in the basement, however, you can purchase silica bags on amazon. They absorb moisture. I used for years for food storage in basement and never had a problem. This way you can make a "parade" bin and get all that costume stuff out of your closet. as well as all the sentimental (ponies etc) that you have. Just toss a few silica bags in the bin with your stuff. Also, for pictures look into the IRIS photo storage on amazon (I just hit a HUGE sale at Michaels and got them for $8) Each box holds 16 smaller boxes that hold 100 photos each for a total of 1600 photos. in a very small space

I redid my dining room in November, and I painted it Agreeable Grey but Sherwin Williams. If you take any swatch that you like from another store to Lowe's or Home Depot, they will mix it for you. Paint is less expensive at those places, and you may even find them on sale or with a rebate.

I think half the cupboard with hubby, matching hangers on both sides, keep the shoe racks and get rid of the hanging organiser - it doesn't fit and looks out of place. Each person should have a shoe rack. The top shelf can be for sentimental, half each, the second shelf can be for sweaters or knits, half each. Get half your stuff in the drawers, you have 10x what he has and he should have the same access to a portion of the closet, regardless of your stock, because you're in an equal partnership. Currently the room is overwhelmed with your things, and it reminds me of Feng Shui when they say the 2 bed side tables should be matching, both sides of the bed should be accessable, so the relationship is equal. It would be much easier for you to have 1 pair of flip flops, instead of needing a custom bag of flipflops you need to transport to a different location to store, plus 10 extra pairs in the closet. Wardrobes are for shoes, like a slob comes clean says, it's your container size. If you need to stash clothes, shoes etc outside of your bedroom, you have too much. Repeating that mantra will help you remember that no one can maintain organization with that amount of stuff. It's just too much! I have 1 purse, 1 flipflops,1 handbag... When I saw this, I think these limits would make your journey towards minimalism much easier.

Agree especially with the hanging shelf, doesn’t really make sense to me, you have drawers and under bed storage, keep clothes and shoes only in your closet, have you thought about doing a konmari on all of your sentimental things again, can you keep one of each type of thing such as my little pony, sell or give away the rest, it’s stored away and someone else would love those things. Knits/hoodies, I think you can get these down to a weeks worth altogether, baseball caps, if not worn this year, sell or give away.

This would be good advice for someone who doesn't struggle with hoarding disorder! if it was that easy for her to limit her items, I think she would have by now. I hope this doesn't sound rude! it's just that people aren't educated about hoarding disorder and how challenging it can be. It is truly a mental illness and changes can't happen overnight or it can trigger re-hoarding. Solutions that seem obvious to us can be almost impossible for a hoarder because it requires too much letting go at once. Changes need to be made slowly and steadily to reduce risk of "relapse" and to maintain mental health of the person who is hoarding. She's made AMAZING progress over the last year or so!!!

@@Kanatine yeah I getcha! I've been researching minimalism, decluttering and hoarding for 12 years, 11 years a minimalist. I've read every blog there is online, atleast once. I don't expect her to go to one of each just yet but the excess is still quite extreme and how it takes over the whole closet. I think we have to be honest with Ms Heart, I think honesty is a key factor in learning.

You both have some good suggestions but as someone that's also struggling with downsizing my hoard just reading your comments about keeping 1 of each gave me anxiety haha. Clothes are massively sentimental to me, it's not just about practicality and I know it's the same for Ms Heart. It seems silly, to be attached to clothes, shoes, bags but each of them can have a story or memory attached and it makes us feel safe to hold onto that. The same with the more obvious things like the My Little Pony stuff. I do agree the closet would be better as just clothes though and the things like the fun 'party supplies' that are rarely used could be stored in air tight containers in the basement. Having a small shared closet like that should be just for the things used on the day to day. The rest of ponies could squeeze under the bed with the other sentimental stuff then it's all in the same place and not taking up much needed closet space. The black hanger thing doesn't look like it fits well and cramps up the space too. The shelves above would be better utilised for bins and bulky items like sweaters. It is hard, sometimes impossible, trying to organise when you have too much stuff, but there needs to be a compromise to keep the anxiety at bay and that's finding good ways to store and organise the things we're just not ready to part with yet, but may do eventually.

@@Kanatine Yes, your comment explains it well. It's baby steps but look how far she's come! I'm in a similar position, it's very overwhelming and very slow progress but I'm inspired by the shift in Ms Heart recently, her decisions are getting quicker and easier every day.

I agree about the paint. There are so many variations of grey. We used Behr’s ‘Evening White’ in our bathroom. It’s a cooler grey on the blue side. I would really like to see a sample ‘Earl Grey’ from the Magnolia Home line. It looks really soft and warmer for a bedroom.

You’re so inspirational! Become a professional organizer to help others. A tip is to stacked your flip flops vertically in a magazine holder from dollar store. First, sort pictures by multiple poses and choose one. Second, organize the pictures by dates. Third, put them in photo albums that look the same. For the future use a an app like Shutterfly to print yearbooks instead of paper pictures

I know you have quite a few sentimental boxes in the basement. I think you should put the my pretty pony sentimental box and any other purely sentimental items (example - clothes or other things you are keeping put not using) in the basement. If all you sentimental items are in one place then someday you can maybe sort out the items by time of your life and just keep the most important things. I know you’re not to that stage yet but you will be someday!
