I once did a New Zealand run in HOI4. I didn't want to piss off the allies so I tried to naval invade the Dutch East Indies, but then I realised I didn't have naval range. It took me 2 in-game years to build up a good army and navy, so I just gave up.

You can basically get a free formable that gives decent manpower just rush down the left side of the focus tree and get the Maori voulounteers then wait for Australia, Uk, France and Usa to join the Allies and ask their pacific islands. After that switch to Japan's side and ask their islands too. You get free cores on all the islands (one of them has like infinite chromium) plus a claim and a core on Taiwan

I may be biased because I am a Kiwi but when the New Zealand Focus tree was originally added I quite liked it it wasn't very powerful but it had a lot of fun historical stuff . but unfortunately it has not aged well , all of the Commonwealth Nations really need to be redone with the modern style of Hoi4 Focus trees

When Man the Guns first came out I remember doing a run as New Zealand where I went all in on navy, and ended up with a Kiwi carrier fleet. I spent the whole game growing my carrier fleet and microing it against Japan. I actually sank a good number of Japanese ships, and had a pretty fun game. I don't remember if I ever lost any carriers since this was like 2 years ago, but I do remember my fleet having to wait in port for a few months to replenish sunk destroyers and cruisers.

On the far left side of the focus tree you can unlock the ability to get islands from your allies, if you go Fascist but stay in the allies and don't join the war than get islands from your allies and stay until America joins, ask them for islands than immediately take the focus to join Japan, request islands from Japan and unite Polynesia. That's the idea anyway, I've only seen it done but never done it myself. Or skip all that, play Australia, Make good Cruiser's for anti-surface raiding and Infantry + Tank.

The history behind the Bob Semple is pretty interesting. As I recall (potentially incorrectly, don't cite a KZbin comment for your history term paper), New Zealand around this time didn't have much of an industry to speak of, with most of it used for railway manufacturing and no way to roll steel thicker than 15mm, or any way to get a hold of anything better than a tractor for propulsion. Even so they managed to make something which, if not viable in a military context, was still a proof of concept for their nascent industry, and by 1941 or so they were throwing down carrier hulls.

you're actually missing a whole lot of interesting details also the railroad stuff is not true most of New Zealand's rails came from other countries we did have some heavy industry but they were more related to construction and farming than to Railway. the Bob Semple Tanks as a concept was inspired the American Disston "Six Ton Tractor Tank" . Bob sample/Robert sample who at the time was Minister of Public Works was basically given the mission to make a prototype "tractor tank" something that was cheap to make and could be used like a mobile pillbox because during that time they couldn't really borrow tanks of the British because the British just lost most of their tanks in France . the Bob Semple Tanks that were made were all prototypes made with the cheapest materials possible they just made them as a proof-of-concept , Bob sample/Robert sample imagine that if they were mass-produced they they would make it so the body was made and then could be distributed across New Zealand and when the Japanese invade the bodies could just simply be placed on the Caterpillar D8 crawler tractor temporarily just during combat and honestly it would of been somewhat effective . but luckily there was no need to do that because the Americans joined in and the British started to have enough tanks to start to lend to the Commonwealth countries .

On another note, this tech tree came around the same time as licenses feature so PDXs logic on New Zealand was "you research fast, you give others bonus, you get industry in return". That's why NZ focus tree can give you 6(or was it 5) research slots, second one after US(originally, USSR nowadays after NSB can probably get the same amount too) and why all your political focuses end with "join research group of X". IE you research Big Bob not for yourself, but for Canada or USA, whom will lend lease it to UK or India to be used. But yeah, looking at current trees for Ethiopia, Portugal, Bulgaria and Netherlands, it's bad. You should at least be able to pursue "overlordship" over British Malaya in competition with Australia, get claims on Dutch East Indies and request control of the islands from US.

On a side note what NZ tree needs(for sake of complexity I'll talk about only loyalist path) is to have focuses that give it massive special forces capacity(as marines is basically all you army), off map factories from other Commonwealth members and finally volunteer focuses for manpower. In fact ALL Commonwealth nations should get focuses to get volunteer manpower from Raj, off map factories from Canada and US and maybe even some old ships from UK and US. Fixing Bob Sample, Schofield and Big Bob focuses is secondary to that.

I pulled 300k manpower from New Zealand in a competitive multiplayer with 30+ players. New Zealand is capable of standing in ww2 against European axis powers like Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and, if they are just bad, Italy. New Zealand is all about pulling out insane unexpected surprise attacks against larger more powerful nations to get a quick beach head that Britain and America can rush in and defend.

There's only one anarchist playthrough possible, which is one of the uprisings in the Spanish Civil War. It is massively overpowered if you do it properly. You can get core territories on the entire world, which allows you to use the full population, resources, and factories of any state you desire. If you play as the Spanish, win the civil war, and then immediately invade China (which you will have a state in already as you conquer Portugal), then you will have unlimited manpower and good resources.
