Dude. I'm just finished a hard campaign with Hojo. The gold mine is a godsend in helping me expand. I played defensive and consolidate at Choke points so until I can get the a Arsenal mastery and field hojo fire rockets. They are such a fun unit and the number of times I sniped a general in battle. Never gets boring!

I could never get into Medieval 2. The horrible camera controls and dogshit ai unit pathing kills my interest anytime I try to play it. It download it all excited and get into my first battle and think "oh yeah, now I remember why I never play you". Shogun 2 in my opinion is the best historical title. I love it so much. These game's can't hold a shadow to TW: Warhammer 1 and 2 though. Not even close. The fairest thing to do is to compare Shogun 2 to other historical titles.

Perhaps the hand mortars can be useful if use them to fire two volleys in syncs with a proper charge from good infantry since it seems like the mortars just disrupts the formation significantly, thus making charges having a bigger impact. I'm just assuming. I really wanna try to exploit every benefit from every unit no matter how sucky they are. It might open up unorthodox strats :3

Hojo hand mortars may not be greatest marksmen but they have just enough accuracy to wipe out entire general's guard. Having two of these units, waiting patiently for your order to simoultaniously fire onto targeted spot can grant you decisive advantage in bigger battles.

My technique with the Hojo is that since I have the possibility to be the richest clan in the game, I upgrade my gold mine to max and build markets on almost every province. Then I take a province with a school (either the Imagawa province or the Yamanouchi one) then hire a shit ton of metsuke and rush the bribing skill. Then I’ll just bribe every unique units from each clan I’m at war with since their upkeep will be likely cheaper than the ones you’ll get. I’ve managed to defeat a Terrifying Oda army by bribing the shit out of their ashigaru until their general’s army is the only one left lol.

Another good use of fire-bombers is to park one or two behind a matchlock unit. An enemy melee unit charging them will already have taken a big morale hit from the volley of gunfire, and having fire bombs going off around them often triggers their route response. If you take out a couple of your guys in the process, well.. that's why you get cheap ashigaru. Also, fire bombs exploding in the chokepoint you can form on one side of a bridge... you almost feel sorry for the enemy.

When I first read their clan description, I really liked them and the idea of going castle to castle. But, once I actually played as them, it turned out to not be a viable strat. You can conquer a castle and sit there with superior force. But the enemy will just raid the province non stop, draining your economy while they produce more units. And you can't build citadels everywhere, due to food. Plus, you can't pursue really well with artillery. Which I guess is realistic. It's just disappointing to me that you can't do what it says on the bloody description.

The only good thing about hojo for me is cheaper buildings on early game and middle game fire rocket. Even get free artillery on early game, i still cant use it to siege castle because of its movement (around 3 or 4 steps).

The siege units and mortars are really good in the right situation. Start a siege battle and destroy the towers with cannons then approach and bomb the hell out of the units within the walls using the hand mortars. It's more time consuming but you will spare the lives of your own troops.

Did a custom battle ones with 20 mortars. Couldn't even kill half of what was inside of the castle. The accuracy is too bad. Maybe they are mediocre at best when trained with improved accuracy. Fire rockets do a lot better.

Firebomb throwers are soooooooo garbage, I'm 90% sure they are programmed to aim for friendly units on fire at will if they are within the arc, as I have put them for example on walls with the friendly unit barely inside the arc and a horde of enemies ahead of them and they will hit the friendly unit with the majority of the volley somehow, I will also do the same horde situation but the firebomb throwers are behind the enemy and they still land the majority of the volley inside the friendly unit even if they are just barely inside the firing arc

the firebombs work well behind a thin spear wall in combination with matchlock and your artillery. these units are all about breaking morale, not killing. i find them effective in very hard

If you want the most out of your siege units try building them in provinces with Master Bowmaker and Hunting Lodge this gives extra 25% accuracy buff to the bases stats plus -10% recruitment cost. Fully upgraded siege unit with maxium experience points will get 43% bonus to accuracy and 18% to reload.

Why go high range/monk bows as Hojo when your main general has night fighter? Ranged units are roughly a 1/4 less effective at night. Use bomb throwers, fire rockets & maybe 1 cannon at night you will se that because they are so inaccurate that they really suffer no penalty at night! Hojo is not a strong clan by any means being very average/meh in near every aspect but it allows versatility as no unit is a must. Fire bomb throwers are not good but so underestimated. 1 or 2 is so useful in siege assaults or crushing moral 7 were people go wrong is they think it is for damage which they are not. On the defensive siege fire bomb throwers are monsters 2nd to only matchlocks that take more skill to use correctly. Don't build many bomb throwers as Hojo say 1 or 2 per stack & when they are obsolete by Kisho ninja's or rocket throwers et cetera use bomb throwers to defend a castle or brige of significant value like say a route you enemies will come from. 3 naginata samurai at a water or bridge crossing with a bomb thrower or 2 can hold off far greater number & more expensive units. Do 2 Naginata & 1 warrior monk if possible with bomb throwers. These can be acquired early to mid game. A simple strategy but effective.

note that hojo hand mortars outrange enemy archers on the walls. completely destroy their wall and archers without ever being in range for them to hit. then arc shots into the troops stationed inside. mediocre in field battles but divine in actual siege.

Hojo is a terrible clan. Even their starting position is quite horrible. If you don't wipe Takeda early you'll be facing both them and Oda at the same time (two of the strongest clans of the game). Siege units are useless and 10% castle cost reduction is an insult as a clan trait. This clan should had a food reduction for castles, maybe one free level from fort->stronghold to focus on defense. But there is no reason to play as Hojo. If you like going the gunpowder route on tech, Oda and Otomo are better options.

One of the biggest problems with the in-game castles is that you can only have 1 for each province. The 1 castle rule only came about when Tokugawa Ieyasu became shogun and was one of the many reforms he did to restrict the power of the daimyos. Before that the feudal families had many castles in their provinces. The main castle (honjō) was mostly a daimyo's residence and symbol of power. Actual control of a province was attained through chains of satellite castles (shijō) which unlike the honjō the shijō were strictly meant for military purposes, located on-top of near un-scalable mountains and were designed to be almost un-observable to anyone from lower elevations and relied on the usage of terrain for the main strength of the defense. I think there should of been some form of system that allows you to build satellite castles within your provinces similar to earlier games where you can build forts inside your territories. The number of shijō within a province depends on the level the main provincial castle or honjō is. A fort will only allow 1 Shijō in the province but a citadel will allow 5. The Hojo clan should have a bonus as each of their province already has a shijō as well as being able to build an extra shijō. So a level 5 Hojo settlement will have the potential to have 6 Shijō instead of just 5. Also the Jojo would also have reduced construction costs carried over to their Shijō

This will buy time to prepare the defenses of the province Honjo. This means it can make taking provinces longer.

Hmm, question Mr.SD, have you ever tried mass Hojo Hand Mortars (hopefully with accuracy maxed). It's incredibly fun and they will decimate any conceivable army before reaching your forces. Low side is, of course, the low ammo count.

I have found that the mangonels are actually quite good at attacking castles, especially after the defenders have sortied and lost. Just blow the entire place to pieces and take your free castle. No need to worry about enemy archers or storming the castle.

Ever since TW:W2 came out there's been much more interest in the game, especially since Mortal Empires turned it into this absurd leviathan--and also since some original TW:W clans are still getting army list rebalances via new patches and releases. _Bearing in mind,_ I don't own them myself and getting all of that stuff is a pretty big monetary investment if you haven't been already, so. Thank you for these videos, by the way--I thought Total War just wasn't for me when I tried and bounced off multiple games I bought in a pack years ago. Turns out I was just looking for the right one, and Shogun 2 was it--and these videos have been super helpful in getting the hang of things!

Ugh, another one of these. Compare your damn real life map to the in-game map and you'll see east is still east. Just because it's also to the north, doesn't make the right side of the map any less east, and even if it did, even if the map was flipped 180 degrees I'd still call it east, because that's what the in-game map looks like, why would I confuse people by saying north when on the in-game map it's east. Sorry if I come off as aggressive, but the amount of time I get comments from people trying to sound smart about this subject would drive anyone crazy.

Hojo siege units won me Kyoto in my massive play through, and the fire bomb throwers destroyed the Ashikaga walls and gates allowing my infantry to flood inside. Of course, I play on normal difficulty because I enjoy a fair challenge.
