Thank you, Debora! I really appreciate that because this one took me so long to put together! All those tiny slivers of b-roll are deceptively time-consuming to plan, shoot, organize, and edit. Next time, I think I'll make it a bit shorter :) I'm definitely glad I decided to upgrade the tape. It kept tearing my paper no matter how careful I was!

Hello Natasha! You might be happy to find a PR122 Quin Magenta in the expanded SoFlat palette. Your speculation as to why we held back on Quin Magenta was spot on, it is a very transparent pigment, so the SoFlat version of this color has the addition of PW6 (Titanium White) to boost opacity and fit with the general utility of SoFlat colors in studios. Thanks for giving SoFlat a try!

I really appreciated your very thorough and careful approach to this topic! I recently wondered whether there was much of a difference between matte acrylic paint and acrylic gouache, and I found another video which asked that broad question. But, she only compared Turner acryla gouache and an off brand of matte acrylic paint she said she had never heard of before. And, there was no careful consideration of using the same pigments. Then, based on the comparison of those two products, she drew the broad conclusion that matte acrylics and acrylic gouache were quite different. The performance of the matte acrylic paint she used was different from that of SoFlat, and even from Blick matte acrylics. It was not representative of the entire category of paint. I found your comparison of two very well-known artist quality products, and your narrower question (comparing only these two products, not the two broad categories) really helpful. I have only used the SoFlat samples which Golden sent out when this was a new product, but I did notice a strong odor. I’m not really sensitive to it, but it was one of the stronger-smelling acrylic paints I have tried. I agree the odor is similar to that of some brands of house paint. I don’t find it offensive, but some people might. Overall it was a great paint.
@Anonymoi2 жыл бұрын
Sorry there is some glitch with my ipad and it doesn’t let me edit my comments. I wanted to add… or maybe ask (if you remember the exercise) whether it is at all possible that your black marker is actually bleeding into the SoFlat titanium white paint, rather than that paint being more sheer than the Holbein acrylic gouache. Recently, I made a mistake and started gessoing the back side of an Ampersand hardboard panel, which has a seal printed on it. (I actually made the mistake with cutting it, so the front was ruined.) I used numerous coats - I don’t even remember how many - of acrylic gesso… either Liquitex Professionals or Grumbacher… and I never managed to keep the seal from bleeding through. I have wondered exactly what the base of the SoFlat paint is, to make it stronger-smelling than some other acrylics, and whether it could possibly have any kind of solvent quality. I think you would be able to tell from your swatching. On camera it just seemed like maybe the marker bled slightly.
@NatashaPaints2 жыл бұрын
It never even occurred to me that the Sharpie might bleed into the paint! But now that you mention it, I think it's possible. I don't remember the sharpie bleeding, but it may have bleed through, and I just didn't notice. I'll have to look at the video again. I probably should have applied a clear topcoat or an acrylic gel to seal the sharpie first. I can't believe I didn't think of that. Thanks for pointing this out to me!!

Golden likely chose cadmiums because they are more opaque than modern pigments, and so gave an edge on the opacity they were after. Good review!

thank you for your review. Most people now are looking for non toxic paints not only for their own safety but the environment. If you are out doing plein air painting you dont want to be throwing your paint water on the ground to poison the area, rivers etc. Personally I would prefer the non toxic alternatives.

Thank you :) I prefer the nontoxic options too. Once I’ve exhausted my current supply of cadmium paints, I’m going to buy nontoxic alternatives, I think. The colors are close enough for most situations. I figure it’s not worth the risk.

Fascinating info and you've answered several questions I've had. As you know I just bought some Holbein watercolors and swatched them, and have to say I noticed the odd color differences between my familiar Daniel Smith brand. Learned a lot in the swatching process, but what I was really going to buy was the gouache but at the last minute opted for more watercolors. Didn't have enough info on which Holbein gouache to buy -- acryla or regular, and now might not even go with the Holbein! Appreciate this comparison and insights on pigments, Natasha, and this is such a masterpiece of a visual information as well! 🥰🥰Cheryl

Thank you, Cheryl! I was a little thrown by some of the pigments too. I really wasn't expecting to find much difference, so I was quite surprised by how different some of them were, like the burnt sienna. I'm glad it was helpful to you! :)

Nicely made video, very thoughtful and informative. It didn't come up in the comments but when you're doing the cost comparison by volume, it's perhaps not an even comparison. I imagine that the amount of binder contributes to the volume and the cost, where paints with more binder and less pigment are cheaper. I haven't used the Golden paints here, but they appear to be way more diluted and pourable compared to Acryla. I noticed that some folks commented that the Acryla looked more vibrant-that's probably because it probably contains more concentrated pigment per brush stroke. Just some stuff to keep in mind, I get a ton of mileage out of Acryla paints, but will be checking out the Golden line soon. Thanks!
@NatashaPaints2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Kevin! That's a really good point. It's hard to quantify things like pigment load with at-home testing, and I agree that comparing price by volume alone has it's limitations. I've gotten a lot of mileage out of my Acryla paints too, especially considering how tiny the tubes are. SoFlat is a much more fluid paint. I have to say, though, that it's surprisingly pigmented given how fluid it is. Thank you for your thoughtful comment; you've given me something new to consider :)

Beautiful painting! Thanks for a great review & comparison of these two paints. I know you’ve had this up for a while. I’m just going through acrylic gouache videos and came across yours. I have a decent set of WN Designer Gouache and a couple of tubes of Holbein gouache an set of gelli gouach (that I really haven’t put through it’s paces. All of the big brands colors, including these are beautiful with high quality pigments and smooth lay down. The variations in the quality of them are not that huge, from what I’m seeing, but can be significant for some artists depending on their preferences. So far, I don’t think I want to switch over from regular gouache to using to acrylic gouache and the price for the top brands of acrylic gouache are about the same as traditional gouache, I think 🤔? At any rate, in the videos I’ve seen so far, I’ve seen two exceptions to everything I just said. I watched a Jerry’s Artarama vid on comparing Liquitex Acrylic Gouache to Holbein Acryla, I think. Anyway, he said Liquitex Gouache was not “gouache” at all, but soft acrylics without the gloss and the coverage was not good at all in his swatching…way too thin. Now maybe Liquitex has improved the quality since this video that was a maybe 4 or 5 years ago? The other acrylic gouache I saw reviewed was Turner….no comparison, just a review on its own. The reviewer gave it a very good review and from what I’ve seen it compares favorably to the big pricey ones. Amazon has some very reasonable prices on Turner so I do think I’ll be giving Turner a try bc it appears that it may be very much close to high-end ones and so affordable. 😁
@NatashaPaints2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment, Nancy! I haven't been very active on youtube this past month; I'm so sorry I missed your comment when you first posted it. I tried the Liquitex gouache a few months ago, and I have to agree that the coverage is not the best. Some colors were better than others, but quite a few turned out splotchy. My favorite acrylic gouache so far is acryla, but I recently bought a set of the Turner paints that I'm eager to try. I'm hoping it lives up to the hype :)

Such beautiful work-not only the paintings, but the video itself is such an artful, visual feast. 😊 I'm new to your channel, and am about to try some Holbein Acryla for the first time also, so this really helps. One thing I'm worried about is the logistics of keeping my palette and brushes from drying out-and also how much water to use. Do you have any quick tips for that?
@NatashaPaintsАй бұрын
@@wdashwor Thank you! It’s hard to give advice on dry time because everyone works a little differently. Some people like to use wet palettes; I don’t much care for them, but a lot of people find them helpful. Mostly I just use a little spray bottle to mist my palette, and I rinse out my brushes frequently as I work. Winter is a good to time to practice because the open time of the paint is usually much longer. If you practice and play around, you’ll figure out what works best for you :)

So, first off, thanks very much for this video. I'm trying to learn about acryla gouache (cause I suspect the paint markers I have use them) and it's been super helpful. However. I have a little jar of So Flat titanium white that I use for a kind of white out for small mistakes (I bought it after watching your video-so thanks for that too!). I've had it for several months now. When you said "So Flat has to be stirred before using," I immediately said out loud, "IT DOES?!" and grabbed my jar. Wouldn't'ya know it, it says it right on the jar and everything! I never had any issues w/ the paint before, but I was just tickled that I've been using this thing for months and had missed that very basic step. Hope you're well, Natasha. Thanks again for this video.

Thank you, Gina! I'm so glad the video was helpful; I really appreciate the feedback 😊 I've decided that I'm going to make more videos like this in the future, since I've gotten so much positive feedback. So thank you so much :) The interesting thing that I've noticed about the SoFlat is that some of the colors seem to settle and separate more quickly than others. I've noticed that the white paints seems to separate less...or maybe it's just less noticeable. I don't think I would have noticed either if I hadn't seen the label. With the greens, it's more obvious. I hope you are doing well too; I'm wishing you a beautiful week!

Beautiful work! Can you say if one of these paints offers more fluid brushstrokes over the other? I have recently started using Holbein Acrylic Gouache and I really like them but I have wondered if the SoFlats might move more fluidly on the paper.
@NatashaPaints24 күн бұрын
@@willford81 I think SoFlat is much more fluid out of the jar than Holbein. With Holbein, I usually extend them out with water which makes them behave more like watercolors. You do lose some opacity that way. SoFlat is good if you want a really rich, matte, and opaque area of color that also flows nicely.

Regardless of the pigments, is the base the same or different? you mentioned in the beginning they both were acrylics, so is there any difference in the base at all?
@NatashaPaints2 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question. I’ve been looking into it since you asked. I couldn’t find the complete ingredient list for Golden, but they do list the binder as being an acrylic copolymer emulsion of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and butyl acrylate (BA). My understanding is that this is the same, chemically, as the binder in the Holbein paint. Both paints also contain Benzisothiazolinone (BIT) which is an antimicrobial/preservative that I learned is a pretty common paint ingredient. Beyond that, I can’t say with any certainty. I wish I could be more help with the actual formula and chemistry involved. As far as the qualitative characteristics of the paint, I can tell you that SoFlat is much thinner/more fluid than Holbein. And the SoFlat also needs to be stirred to prevent the paint from separating which is apparently not a concern with Holbein. So my feeling is that there are probably differences between the two formulas. I don’t know if the differences arise from the ratios of ingredients relative to one another, or if additional ingredients can account for the differences between the two. Anyway, I’m sorry I couldn’t be more helpful. I really appreciate your comment and question. I hope you have a nice weekend :) P.S. Here is the complete ingredient list I found for Holbein, if you are interested: Colorant: Pigment Binder: Acrylic-Metacrylic Copolymer Emulsion Dispersant: Sodium Polycarboxylate Moisturizer: propylene glycol Thickener: Polyacrylate pH Agent: Dimethylaminoethanol Preservative: Benzimidazole Preservative: Benzisothiazoline

Really appreciate the cost comparison, thanks! How do you think how quickly you use the paint would affect the cost comparison? Do you think the Acryla lasts a lot longer or about the same as the soflat?
@NatashaPaints2 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. I haven't actually tested that, so it's kind of hard to say. I think it depends on how you use the paint. With the acryla, I use it with quite a bit of water (almost like watercolors sometimes) so it goes much further than if I was painting with thicker, opaque layers. With the SoFlat I feel less inclined to use water, although you still can. It's quite a bit more fluid than acryla, but it's still very pigmented. The main challenge I have with SoFlat is that it evaporates very quickly on my palette, because it has a tendency to flood outward and that makes it evaporate much quicker. You can waste a lot of paint that way. I work around that by using a palette with wells to contain the paint so it can't spread out and evaporate. You could also use a stay wet palette. If you struggle with evaporation, you might prefer the acryla. If you can control the evaporation, I kind of feel like they last equally long, but I can't say for sure. So far I haven't needed to replenish either one. I hope that maybe answers your question :) Thanks for watching and for your question!

If a line does not contain magenta, cyan and a primary yellow I won't buy it because I like to mix my own colors and get more unique results. Holbein colors are bright and do not muddy or gray when mixed as other lines I have found. Transparency and dilution of pigment are important to me as well. It can be inexpensive but watery and not cover or last. Holbein has changed the chemical make up of many of their pigments to sell to the western market. I use their pencils and for years I could not get them in the US, and imported them from Japan because they had compounds not able to sell in countries outside of Asia. I still import my pencils at times because it is more cost effective with shipping contracts for the whole set, but its getting better. What I love about Holbein is their pigments shades are the same across their mediums, its why I like to use them. I can easily move between pastel, watercolor, gouache and pencil in a mixed media project and not worry too much about color match. I do use Turner as well and they are amazing. I like Golden's products, but I don't use their paints. At the end of the day I will always reach for Holbein and often mix Golden's glazing and retardant with Holbein.
