Dont look at it that way. See it like this: you have a break in which you can explore a whole new country, get more life experience and world knowledge, meet new people and try keep in touch with them, make the craziest memories, do stuff you could never do at home like fun excursions or mingle in the local culture and people, invest in knowing the culture and history of the country, take a lot of pictures and videos so you can remember it for decades, write about it in a journal. Dont just see it as a little break, dont be a lazy fat tourist who just stays in a resort, make it a lifetime lasting experience! And when you get home, set your goals on the next amazing trip, there are plenty of countries to visit. Edit: just make sure you’re respectful to the people and culture, but also the environment of a country. Don’t go there and be an ignorant tourist who makes people mad and pollutes the nature.

The question is about travel planning. On social networks or on travel forums you can find contacts of people who are planning a vacation in the same place and at the same time. In addition, you can always meet a company of drunken compatriots. In 2014, I met Russian petroleum engineers in Thailand (I’m also Russian), who arrived after a project in Kuwait. you got to take trips with a mission, like go somewhere because it has something unique to experience or to allow you to capture something you could not otherwise. I have gone places to see something really specific in the past and to get there you got to have some sort of plan, the "holiday" is only a byproduct. More recently I have gone to places with the intent to capture them with VR Video, places you can experience in 3D in a vr headset (or your phone and a lens adapter), which no one has yet captured that way, the community making these types of videos is small, but it is fun to be able to jump back into these places, share them and see what others have recorded, who followed the same path. So when you think of taking a Holiday to rediscover yourself or whatever, think what is the goal and is it a place you feel drawn to.

First step would be to just not use the phone for the time you are on vacation. Being simply not available for everyone all the time, not looking up stuff on the internet or getting distracted by KZbin and so on has improved my free time so much, especially when I go out on vacation. At least where I live (in Europe) there is so much culture to find around every corner, so much history to be learnt. Not having my phone available all the time has made me really appreciate talking a simple walk through the old historical parts of cities, the architectural styles, the general layouts, the viewing angles and once you find something so interesting that you want to know more about you simple go to the library and lend a book about it, take it with you on your trip and read it there - about famous buildings, important people who lived there or about the history of the ground you walk on in this very moment. I can only recommend it to everyone, it calms you down and challanges your mind at the same time.

I'm almost never on my phone on holidays except maybe right before bed. I'm not wasting my precious holiday doing something I can do back home

Vacation like me. Get a passport, go to a country youve never been to before, book cheap airbnb's because i only go there to sleep. Try cultural foods of the place youre visiting, check out some museums and historical sites. Do an activity if possible {in venice i saw an opera, in Naples i scuba dived ancient Pompeii ruins, in Nepal i did white water rafting in the Himalayas, come november i will hike machu pichuu in peru}

Can't relate. I spend vacation with a group of people & we do a lot of walking, driving, & shopping. No social media at all, TV is limited to breakfast & dinner (if we eat in).

Many years ago, I had a retail job where I stayed long enough to earn a week paid vacation, so staying within my budget, I drove down to the local spillway to hang out on a Saturday morning with no money to spend on anything but while there, I noticed some of the previous nights partyers must have left an unopened can of beer in the dirt. So I at least enjoyed a nice lukewarm beer that day.

Doing the same shit you were doing at home lol. But sometimes all you need to do get the hell away from wherever you live, and that’s good enough.

look on the bright side. sun burn pain will ground you in reality. :) jokes aside that extra sunlight does do wonders to raise a mood and who knows what or who you might meet or do while away?
