I want to quickly make a note to correct Your statement about WD's bounce attack. He remains in curled up form not for a time period, but until he hist the ground 3 times. Thus, if You are agile enough to keep him in mid-air via slashing, You can defeat him without him ever attacking again or moving to his second phase.
@PerpetualNoob6 жыл бұрын
You are correct Ezergile. I wish I had been observant enough to recognize that it was 3 bounces on the ground. I never saw that pattern. But yes, if we're quick enough with our dashes and upward slashes, we can keep White Defender in the air forever. It's a valid tactic. :) Thank you for pointing that out and adding to the discussion. :)

Yeah, I kinda expected that and never actually use DS and Hiveblood. My charm set is the same that I use through the pantheon, because, well, after Pure Vessel there is no bench, so no respecking builds My usual combo is Quick Slash, Unbreakable Strengh, Mark of Pride, Dashmaster and Sprintmaster. And sometimes I consider to switch sprintmaster and take Nailmaster Glory in the particular section after Sheo, because Collector is such a bitch.

This line, this line is one of the most realistic scenes of Love in all of modern culture, I can't even explain how beautiful it is that it is REAL Pain, real EMOTION, In so many AAA titles of Modern Gaming, there is barely any emotion, so seeing something so great, so emotional, in a game made by 4 people (Counting Our composer Christopher Larken) it really shows how much love is put into this game, and why it is one of THE BEST Modern Games.

I think every boss in this game is fairly designed for the most part, but the devs have a hard on for seeing how long you can endure these fights for a lot of the time. Once you get all the patterns down, it usually just comes down to surviving the onslaught.
@JoyceW-Art5 жыл бұрын
I kinda just cheesed my way through this 5 times by using Long Nail, Mark of Pride, Unbreakable Strength and Quick Slash The 'safe' corner spot on the left really helped too And come on...he's such a joy, I often laughed while I was fighting him and was never mad when I 'died'. Much better than Grey Prince Zote for sure Also that whole sequence of you just standing there while White Defender is doing his thing at 10:54 just cracked me up Edit: also about the statue, you don't have to rest at a bench to see it. I was impatient in my playthrough and just climbed out of home only to jump back in and the statue was there. It's both sad and endearing

I had a lot of fun learning this fight, to the point that I got up to Dung Defender 8 before Lifeblood happened and capped him at 5 (I still had to beat 8 to get his ending though, which was rough). To the point that my first attempt at fighting his Radiant form in the Hall of Gods was a success, because I had fought him so many times before. Quick note about healing: if you can't reach a corner, it's safe to heal right next to the rumbling ground during the final part of "jubilee" attack, as all of the dung balls will go over your head. It is interesting the various things that can be inferred from Ogrim's dialogue and dream nail quotes. It's possible that his dialogue, dream dialogue, and statue after defeating the final White Defender implies that he's passing the torch to the Knight, and that he believe the Knight is worthy of inheriting the title of Great Knight of Hallownest. Ogrim is also likely one of the oldest characters in the game, as his identity, along with the identities of the other four Great Knights, has been lost to history, and is the subject of scholarly inquiry, according to Lemm. Only a few characters, namely the White Lady and -Nailmaster- Paintmaster Sheo seem to know who Ogrim is (Sheo claims to have forgotten Ogrim, but this seems to be out of some disdain for him, as he's sculpting a statue of him as he claims to have forgotten him). Which would seem to imply that the Nail Sage and Nailmasters are also quite old, or at least very well learned in history. He and Hegemol are also the only Great Knights who might survive the game, as Isma and Dryya are already dead, and Ze'mer dies upon completion of her quest, while the fates of Ogrim and Hegemol are left ambiguous. As a side note, we have even more evidence that the Grey Mourner is Ze'mer, as bringing a delicate flower to the White Lady will cause her to muse that the flowers were brought by a knight from a faraway land.
@PerpetualNoob6 жыл бұрын
That is a great point Thesaurus Rex: we can sneak 1, maybe 2+ (depending on charms of course), hp healed if we stand just to the side of the dung pile during the end of the Jubilee. And yeah, it is very true. There's so much we can interpret from the dialogue. I do think Ogrim has passed on the mantle of "Great Knight". Though that still begs the question of where he has gone now. And yeah, it does seem like Ogrim must be fairly ancient. Or really strong to keep his mind and memories through the changing of the kingdom. Though why there are no relics that give the names of the Great Knights is still strange, no matter their age. I do hope we get closure to both Ogrim and Hegemol's stories someday. :) Huh. That's an interesting point about the delicate flower. Good call. :)
@Thesaurus_Rex6 жыл бұрын
I really wish we had a better timescale for the events before the game. How recently did Hallownest fall? Elderbug, who can't be that young, given his name, seems to have been born after the fall of Hallownest, but there are some characters, like Emilitia, Ogrim, Old Stag, and Seer, who would seem to have lived through the fall of the Kingdom. Did it fall the bug equivalent of hundreds of years ago, or only a few decades?
@PerpetualNoob6 жыл бұрын
I agree Rex. I'd love to have even some inkling of an idea of the timeline for this game.

I've seen someone take down White Defender by getting him to ball up in the Jubilee attack, then volleyball him in the air so he can't bounce. He need to bounce 3 times to uncurl, so you can stunlock him to death if you juggle him right.
@PerpetualNoob6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, when analyzing the Jubilee, I never caught that it was 3 bounces against the ground to trigger WD to stop bouncing. So it's true: if you can move fast enough and/or dash often enough, you can keep White Defender airborne forever until he's defeated. :)

A good charm build of mine that I've found helpful for all bosses who deal two hits of damage (provided you have basic knowledge of the boss's attacks and 9 hit points) is to make use of Overcharming yourself, equipping (IN THIS ORDER) Grubberfly's Elegy, Quick Slash, Longnail, Fury of the Fallen, and Fragile/Unbreakable Strength. This way, you trade frailness and not being able to heal for making the most efficient use of Grubberfly's Elegy. This build means that you will have the Grubberfly beams on you for the majority of the fight, since you are at one of three places in terms of health: Full health, 5 health and 1 health. Fury of the Fallen triggers the Grubberfly beams again at 1 health, making them stronger than ever, and this combined with Quick Slash and Fragile/Unbreakable Strength means that you will be draining the boss's health as fast as possible, making this a quicker fight.
@PerpetualNoob6 жыл бұрын
True enough Pickle. And if you were watching closely, you'll see a few clips where that was exactly what I was using. However, I never beat WD with it so I cut my discussion about that charm combination. However, if you are able to avoid damage after activating FotF, you are devastatingly strong. :) Just didn't work for me. :)

Hell yeah, been looking forward to this one for a while, especially with you mentioning it now and then when you fought him in Godhome. I think this is your best one yet, especially with how you went into a lot greater detail in your tactics this time around! Out of the two Hidden Dreams DLC, I feel White Defender is the more fun and fair of the two. I had less trouble fighting him than I did with Grey Prince Zote, and that could partially be down to how contagious Ogrim's upbeat attitude is for it. Having beaten every boss Radiant in Hall of Gods, I can safely say he's one of my top 5 favourite boss fights. It's a shame the lore surrounding him is so depressing, but I think that's what makes his positive nature feel so much more charming. Though I disagree with his positive attitude being a mask to hide his pain, it isn't an unfair assumption to make, honestly. It's a common way of coping with depression and tragedy, but given how devoted Ogrim is to being a Knight, I feel like his positive attitude is a sign of his strength of character. He keeps looking forward despite how much he laments on past regrets. Though that might be a more outward look on the character instead of examining who he is, I want it to believe he's carrying his burdens while genuinely preserving his happiness.
@PerpetualNoob6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Four Eyes! :D I agree: I think White Defender is less crazy a fight than Grey Prince Zote. And I hope that you're right: that Ogrim is legitimately happy in spite of his tragic history. :)

This was an excellent video, but, on the topic of where Ogrim has gone, I do believe he'll be making his comeback in the Hornet DLC. A knight of such great power and honor... He likely left to see things for himself so that he may finally bring himself to his senses and bring forth the power his dreams revealed. Even if I'm reaching now, I daresay Ogrim might come to be to Hornet as Hornet was for us, as who would know more about Hallownest than the Pale King's most loyal subject?

I'd say with the discussion of whether his optimism is genuine or forced. I believe that it's somewhere in between.. As much as I hate to just throw a quote from another game in, I think the concept of the "Tortured Crusader" fits him perfectly. _Though tortured crusaders may be beaten and battered, body, mind, and soul, they still somehow continue through torment and hardship. Despite setbacks and impossible odds, they shine like candles even in the darkest times. Somewhere in their minds, they realize that they can’t win in the end, but this only strengthens their resolve to fight for what is right, rather than giving in to hopelessness._

Thank you Nameless Commenter! :D I do know what happens if we mash the attack button with Cyclone Slash: it goes crazy and we hit a whole bunch of times. It's kind of like some fighting game super moves in that way. :)

I know you might know this, but just in case you or anyone doesn't know The spin nail art can be extended if you keep pressing attack. it helps a lot when you want to dell damage to bosses and sometimes it doesn't xD
@PerpetualNoob6 жыл бұрын
That is true Thiago. :) And I think we could maybe extend Cyclone Slash a little bit against White Defender but not to it's full duration because he will do some other attack before it finishes.

Howling Wraiths / Abyss Shriek is a life saver for this fight. Simply because of its trajectory above you and the size of it. And doing it at the right time can delete all the dung balls + 120 damage is combined with the Shaman Stone.

Sorry I'm late, was in school! Let me speak rage dung for a moment: M'BAKA!!M'BAKA!!M'BAKA!!!YA-HA-HA!DOMA DOMA DOMADOMADOMA!!! FAAAAARRRFUNDAAAA!! That said, I enjoyed how in depth you got in terms of what went on behind the scenes during this boss fight, and thought it to be a good way of dealing with any difficult boss fight, Hollow Knight or not. I also think that Ogrim's story is really Grimm, for a jovial guy, and honestly reminds me of Sans (from Undertale) in terms of acting happy but it being possibly artificial. I wanted to point out my charm combo (from what I remember). Unbreakable Strength and Mark of Pride were as helpful as always, and I want to say I had Quick Focus, but I genuinely don't remember, it's been so long. But, I think Sharp Shadow was the key to my success, as it allowed me to dodge attacks while simultaneously dealing damage, which is helpful during the Dung Dive and the Spike Slam (with proper timing). Just food for thought. Finally, I wanted to say that if someone makes a western remix of White Defender/Dung Defender/Both, it totally needs to be named Defender Jubilee. Excited for the spooky season bosses! Sincerely, Will (Edit: sorry for the long response)

No worries Will. Thank you for the lovely comment. :) Yeah. I've been trying to use that process of simply learning bosses first and fighting later for more and more fights. It's helping and I love sharing my journey with each boss (mainly to highlight that no, this boss wasn't easy for me either). :) And yeah, I'm really wondering if Ogrim is just putting up a mask. Which makes his story all the more sad. Thanks for sharing your charm loadout. Even if that wasn't exactly what you used (due to your memory), it's a really great setup. And Sharp Shadow can certainly help provide some extra damage. :)

I can't wait to defeat this boss. I really love this character and want to do the battle justice. I made it to the 4 heart damage level but I got to get better at dodging the boulders. I also need to work up on not getting chocked up too. So many tragic characters. I find myself getting so attached to them it hurts to know and not know what all they went through. 😭💔

I hear you Kristina. I tear up every time I even hear the Hollow Knight's theme. This game is so wonderful.

Perpetual Noob I beat Ogrim today! I took a break and went at it today and finally beat him after countless attempts. Even though it took an arm and a leg it was well worth it! By the end I could defeat him without taking a hit. Just sad that I can’t see him anymore. I am almost done with the game but I want to fight all the bosses so I guess next up is Zote, the Coliseum of Fools’ Third Trail, and Path of Pain, then finally the Radiance. I really don’t want this game to end.

The white defender was my favourite fight in the whole game
@Snoopi255 жыл бұрын
I just attempted this boss, and I got him on my 5th attempt. My problem was 1. Dashing in the wrong direction, and 2. too close to his face when he makes the dung balls... I spaced myself out a bit and was a bit more calm and took him out. Every single fight, he does his scream when less than 50% HP is left, and it always felt like I nailed him so many times afterwards, that I died 1-2 nails away form beating him. I eventually beat him, and like you said, sticking to the ground is wise. I haven't jumped as much at all, because if I would jump for a desolate dive, I would miss it somehow and still get hit. Abyssal Shriek didn't really work for me, prolly cause I wasn't casting it in the right spot. What worked for me was thousands of nails to the face, and spamming shade soul. Quickslash, Spell Twister, Shaman Stone, and Mark of Pride were my charms. I think I found this combo to be my new favorite.

so I started white defender yesterday. the third one took me about an hour maybe a half hour. I basically had to learn to use spells, particularly wraiths on him. Up until now I've only ever been using the nail for everything. Like, all my charms have always been for the nail. Unbreakable Strength, Mark of Pride, Quick Slash, Nail Master's Glory, and Steady Body.. I've used that for pretty much everything. For the third version, I switched to using spells, incorporating soul eater and shaman's stone along with mark of pride. After beating him, I didn't even try to do the 4th one. I figured it was going to be an undertaking, so I waited till tonight. I'm using Soul Eater, Shaman Stone, Spell Twister, Spring Master, and Nailmaster's Glory. Cyclone Slash + Soul Eater seems to work very well. I ended up beating the 4th version just now on like.. my 5th try. Took no time at all lol. Like, 4th version was easier than the 3rd version because I learned to incorporate Cyclone Slash for soul into my build, and it just freaking owns. I can fill up an entire bar with one cyclone slash if I tap it. I'm assuming Soul Eater works with it, because I don't remember Cyclone Slash being this good on its own. It's a good build! I mean, just the one charm notch is enough for a nail build, cuz the nail arts don't get buffed by mark of pride, unbreakable strength or quick slash. It's so good.
@aBanabis3 жыл бұрын
and 5th version just took me about 10 tries, 15 minutes or so. yeah Cyclone Slash + Soul Eater is just good man. 3 hits I get half a bar, 6 hits I get full bar. It's crazy good.

Yeah, I know I’m very late but I have a rather bittersweet theory on where Ogrim went after making the Knight dung statue. I believe that Ogrim might’ve passed away. When you think about it, he was a very old being who had passed down the torch of protector to The Knight and was implied to have realized deep down that the Pale King and the other knights weren’t coming back, I think it makes sense that he would pass on after finding this peace after all these years. After all, we have seen this trope play out with several other characters in the game before: Seer, The Grey Mourner, and (more than likely) Quirrel (and probably some other characters that I forgot to mention). As sad as it is that we probably lost him, I think it’s a nice end to his story: at peace and reunited with the others in death.

Yeah, I agree. I think he probably heads to Isma's Grove to die where she lays. 😢

I just want to mention that dream nail is an excellent charm for this fight: it can keep you safe from bouncing dung balls while you heal, it hursts WD even while he is undergroung and (although its hard to time) it can destroy all the balls from the ground burst atrack as soon as they spawn underground so none go out EDIT: Wow, first time my comment gets noted by the channel, thank you Perpetual Noob
