It always amazes me at just how much optimism existed in 80's mainstream pop culture - music, television, films. The decade had its own problems obviously, but back then there seemed to be a greater sense of people pulling together and overcoming things. These days there's very little differentiation between ongoing issues and mainstream content. Everything now seeps in together and that sense of genuine escapism is long gone.
