John C. Reilly had a good 2018 with films like The Sisters Brothers, Stan & Ollie, and Ralph Breaks the Internet, but Holmes & Watson shows that they can't all be winners.
@wisewolftony6 жыл бұрын
Well honestly that's what happens when you decide to let Will Ferrell drag you back down to his level. Not saying he doesn't have much better in him. But at this stage in his career all he seems interested in doing is playing the same dumbass man child in every single film he does. And at this point I find it to be so repetitive and not funny anymore. Only so many times you can play basically the same character in every single film just in a different situation before it gets old. At least Reilly branches off and does a bunch of different types of roles from comedy to dramatic to a mix of both. And even when he just does comedy he at least plays different types of characters and uses different types of humor. Like for example his role in Kong Skull Island.
@tommycipriani22546 жыл бұрын
John C. Reily already established himself as both a comedic and a professional dramatic actor, his performance in The Perfect Storm and Gangs of New York shows how talented he is. He shouldn't work with Will Ferrell. again.

what's sad (or hopeful) is that will ferrell has enough talent, goodwill, and notoriety that if he so chooses, he could rebuild his career on the back of "serious" independent films, even if it just begins with small appearances and cameos like james franco did for a while
@socal8086 жыл бұрын
I truly believe the reason Will Ferrell movies have been ridiculously bad as of late is because he doesn’t have Adam Mckay in his corner. Remember Adam used to be Wills writer on SNL and every successful Will Ferrell comedy is written and directed by McKay. Everyone says those movies worked because they were improvisational but to be it’s obvious those comedies worked because Adam was feeding Will ideas and jokes to riff on. Without McKay, Will is being paired with very untalented directors that are giving him all the work, he needs someone like Adam to give ideas and jokes to play with when improvising. Im sure if Adam McKay decides to return to comedy someday that he and Will would make something good or at least decent

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Elf ruined Will Ferrell as an actor. Before that, he played over the top characters, but it usually worked because he was in an over the top movie and he usually played a minor character. Then Elf comes out and suddenly people wanna see Will Ferrell scream like an idiot into the camera for 90 minutes. Now, that's the only thing he is capable of doing. You'll never see him pull a Robin Williams and do a jokey, slapstick movie, and then turn around and give an Academy Award nominated dramatic performance because this is all he knows how to do anymore.

As someone who still loves himself some STEP BROTHERS, I can say in that film's defense that Adam McKay established from the get-go that the plot set-up of two man-children being forced to act like adults and accept each other as step brothers was just a loose set-up for Ferrell and Reilly to improv some silly bullshit for the next 90+ minutes, and you were either going to find it hilarious or excruciating. But all Sherlock Holmes movies need coherent plots or engaging mysteries to work properly, even if they're a parody of Sherlock Holmes, and without Adam McKay behind the director's chair to pull these two guys back even a little bit, you're begging for trouble.

One of my best friends guilted me into seeing this with him (paid for it & begged), I seethed the whole time. He definitely regrets forcing me to come haha. I think I ruined the entire experience for him but he had to learn
