The person being interviewed was a straight trans man. This was also in Uganda, where homosexual acts by either sex are illegal and punishable with life sentences, but transgender identification technically isn't illegal (Edit: or wasn't at the time, a 2023 law vastly broadened scope). As you can imagine, not only are they very behind in gender theory, leading to the confusion, but even if the guest was gay it would be really dumb to admit it on national television.

Gay acceptance is also an easier hurdle, since there are so few trans people around, and many more gay people. Again, it's Uganda, one of the most anti-LGBT countries in the world. They criminalize not just identity or orientation, but "acts against nature" themselves (meaning any act that doesn't make babies, if you know what I mean). I'm not sure if they started applying it to straight couples too, but that was on the table a few years back. Even in the most progressive countries, most people don't understand what being trans entails, so the confusion is expected.
