Home Care Cottages

Last week, tinyhouseblog.com/ I made a trip down to visit with Stephen Marshall of Little House on the Trailer. He is introducing his new line of little houses and going after a new need in the area. It is called Home Care Cottages, Solutions for Independent Living. These homes are built specifically for the elderly with requirements such as wheel chair access and maneuverability. Stephen agreed to let me do a video walkthrough with him and take some still photos also.
This Home Care Cottage is 400 square feet in size and has a downstairs bedroom and a loft bedroom. This home is mobile but at 12 foot wide by 33 feet long you need a special permit to move it. It felt very roomy with standard room width. Stephen says that this home is priced at $65,000.

Wow, great house design! I saw this video a couple of years ago and spent a whole day looking for it on KZbin without success under "small house for the handicapped" and "tiny house for the elderly" and other similar search terms. No luck! Today, voila, it came up under my youtube recommendations.

A very thoughtfully well designed home. I love the bathroom with its easy access and the layout and space of each room. The sleeping loft is great idea for overnight guests. I like the fact that there are two entrances. I have just two suggestions: Remove the microwave from the top of the fridge and also provide more easily accessible storage options in the kitchen; perhaps remove the pantry and place a base unit with deep drawers (for storage of pots and pans or dry goods) and/or a base cabinet with pull out shelving which would be more practical for those with limited access to overhead cabinets. These are just suggestions of what would work for me and I understand that everyone's situation is different. Great price too, at $65,000.

Great design for any one but kudos for wheelchair access. Suggestions: Find lower place for microwave. Put deeper taller pantry spaces. Is there a place for trash? Sliding door solution for bath is great. Make deeper and make the outside kitchen surface wide enough to put corkboard for easy posting of all the usual flyers and photos.

I give you 99 points out of a 100, for well thought out designs for senior living, of which I am one. May I suggest: PLEASE move the microwave OFF of the top of the frig where NO handicapped person could reach it! The shelving unit that you have in the kitchen would be flawless for the microwave, with space left on the opening side to place HOT food when closing the microwave door. Also, perhaps hand crank windows so a seated person could open and shut them with ease? Applause for a design!

At the website, home care cottages are described from 120 to 400 sq.ft. Does anyone know the size of this cottage? Width, length, height? This would make a great place to live for a college student or couple even. Thanks.
