How to make Elmer's glue at home" The same glue that is used in school. I found the recipe online. Pour 3/4 cup of water in a saucepan over medium heat. Add 1/4 cup cornstarch, 2 tablespoons light corn syrup and 1 teaspoon white vinegar. Whisk the ingredients together until they're blended well. Stir the mixture constantly until it thickens.

Patty Coghlan I’m reading the comments to learn some things myself & thought I’d jump in here. Gesso does not require any paint to work as gesso. The paint is for preference only, as to get the canvas white or black or clear .. or really whatever color you want. Because we never want to paint on a stark white canvas (if we use store bought gesso or made a white paint gesso) we can also paint the color we want as a ‘ground’ onto the canvas immediately after the last coat of gesso is applied. As the last coat of gesso is just painted onto the canvas we add a color to the brush and paint the wet gesso. Yes, wet on wet. It works wonders to not be paint-blinded by white or off-white if we made gesso without adding any paint or even if there’s white/black/clear paint. Imagine being out in the white snow. After a few minutes we become snow- blinded. The same thing happens with a white/off white canvas and our eyes won’t see tones/values properly. So yes, a ‘ground’ is of absolute importance to stop the white blindness. Hope this helps some & I wish you a lot of Happy painting!!!! ✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️

Mary Oakes asked me: Can you use homemade glue when making gesso? And that is a very good question. I would say that the homemade glue should not be washable like a school glue because the tackiness of it could reactivate when other mediums are applied.!! If you try this, please share how it turned out for you. Also, for some reason your question did not appear in my comments section, so I copy and pasted your question for you!! It is a good question because so many of us make our own "stuff"!! Thanks for watching!!

@@alessandriaj7265 This is not true. Cheap ones are cornstarch based. I don't think the results are the same. They definately aren't the same if you use the homemade school glue recipe. It is best to use Elmers or white glue and talc. You want to be sure to have a good base for your painting. I dont scrapbook, but I do paint with acrylics and want to slowly move into oils so that I have longer freedom periods with my art pieces....ya know, cuz oil paints dont dry nearly as fast as acrylics. and in my opinion it blends better for certain things that acrylics just wont. . anyways .. this vid is very informative and easy to follow!thank you for that!! also as far as the craft paint u use, what about using a thicker type paint like "premier" brand acrylic? its still pretty cheap. maybe like $4.00 or even less at an ac moore store, with their 50%off coupons!! ;) for what a jar that size would need, im just thinkin about your idea of black gesso! it, "premier" is a little glossy when dry but its alot thicker than apple craft paint or those 3 for a $1 walmart craft paints. so idk if that makes a difference.(I know most cheaper craft paints dry matte or just plain flat) thats why I ask ...but hey, that's what emery cloth or real fine grit sandpaper is for I guess. sorry for the length of this..... but thanks again for a smart video!

When making gesso I"ve even used flat latex paint that was left over from when my husband painted the living room!! When in a pinch, my personal opinion is, use whatever is gonna work best for you or what you have on hand at the time!! I don't have an AC Moore anywhere near me :( That is why I grab the cheaper walmart paint just for making my gesso. When I'm working in my journals, I am a huge americana fan or the liquitex basics when I have a michaels coupon!! Can you use this on wood furniture so you don't have to sand it before painting it?
@LesliesCreativeStudio5 жыл бұрын
Gesso was originally used to prep a canvas before an artist began their creative process. Most furniture will have some sort of protective varnish on it, that would need to be sanded off. The varnish causes the surface to be non-porous, whereas canvas is a porous surface. You can try, but I would be afraid that whatever you put on top would eventually chip off.

can I use white spackle instead of using the white Elmer's Glue or flexible clear sealant it's like a calk made by Dap
@LesliesCreativeStudio7 жыл бұрын
Hi Casey!! So sorry in taking so long to respond! I had to think on this one as I have not used either product in my gesso making! I would think that you could use the white spackle (you could also use that as a form of texture paste). If you diluted the spackle with water, you could almost use any color of paint to tint it as well. As far as the flexible sealant, I'm not so sure. I would think that it would dry to a slick/smooth surface. With a gesso, you want a bit of "grit" or "tooth" to it, so that what ever mediums you use have something to grab on to, and the calk would not provide that. If you do try using these ingredients, please let me know how they worked for you!! You never know if you don't try!! Thanks for watching!!

Yes you can use common paint that you use on walls (those are usually latex) but I recommend using cheap acrylic. I've never tried emulision??

What other things can you use instead of baby powder?

+Sprinkleofblossom I have also used marble dust (available at dickblick.com) which works nicely! Some people also use plaster of paris!! Hope this helps and thanks for watching!!
