Home Office review of police firearms use

Channel 4 News has learnt that a Home Office-led review has accepted demands that police firearms officers be treated initially as witnesses rather than suspects in the event of a shooting.

All German police officers are firearms trained and carry a firearm (pistol plus a submachine gun in the car) every day of their professional life. That said, all but a few retire after 40 years of service without ever having fired a single shot. Also, despite the fact that German police officers have always been armed, criminals are generally not, and knife crimes are way lower in Germany than they are in the UK. German police officers always act in teams of two officers, never alone, and de-escalation techniques play a major part in police training. So not much to worry about if British Bobbies gear up.

Not a fan of the police, but they need to be treated better and given more support by their superiors. I'm glad that only 1 in 5 of them will complete this course. Maybe that's why British police aren't running around executing citizens like so many Americans are.

This is exactly what I’m worried about. Armed Police in the numbers they are now should not be armed like they are. If you want an armed deterrent we have soldiers. Not just special forces but 1000s of able bodied men that are trained for combat scenarios. Police are not soldiers. I think it’s wrong that civilian authorities arm themselves in numbers like this in the name of counter terrorism period.

All of your cops should be armed..Why? all shouw be armed..why? because its better have one and never use it ( like the rest of europe ) than needing one and dont have one. Tazers work at 70% of the cases.. that's a 30% chance of it doesnt work on a criminal wiith a knife ( which puts the officer in lethal danger ) if i were a criminal the uk would be the best place for pratice crime. Cops are unarmed and cant barely defend themselves. An armed criminal can kill dozens of officers and civilians before any real cop show up ) A gun is a last resort, firefighst wouldnt go up, but police would be more protected. 90% of the world and 99% of europe has armed police and it works. No innocents shot in my country and barely any criminal shot. But we see the police has a security force which is ready against anything. No offence but for me an unarmed police isnt even a police..Doesnt make me feel safe at all knowing they are not better equipped than a criminal ).

In America police have a Use of Force Continuum, where police should always be 1 level ahead of the criminals - if a criminal is attacking an officer, then the officer can use less-than-lethal or lethal, depending on the department and the level of violence. Here, if a firearms incident occurs out in the country, the nearest ARU can be over 30 minutes away - this puts police 1 level behind on the UOFC, turning the tables. If a police officer in the UK uses lethal force on a suspect, their whole career may be in ruins, and they may even wrongfully face criminal charges. When you pair a lack of force, an inability to use force, and our shitty CPS together, it's understandable why policing is on the drop, and crime is on the rise. Solutions: Train AFOs to cope with the trauma of ending a life. Supply all officers with an X26 Taser (newer models have provided worse successful deployment rates). Equip patrol vehicles of AFOs with equipment from ARVs (namely beanbags, spare ammunition, full body armour, flash/gas/smoke grenades and a lightweight shield), so they're more readily prepared for a threat. Increase the number of AFOs drastically, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. Make officers involved in shootings become witnesses, not suspects, and allow them to continuing training with firearms, but not go back on the field until the enquiry's concluded. Provide easier routes to becoming an AFO if you join from the Armed Forces (same route as for joining the CNC, for example). Slacken control on ammunition taken from the police armoury, as you never know how much ammunition you need until it's too late - as long as every round is accounted for, who cares?

I hope that they handle firearms better than they do tasers. I must say I’m concerned that more and more armed police are about these days, and that the police carry a variety of weapons that a regular citizen can’t. It feels to me like it’s bordering on oppression not just of criminals but regular law abiding citizens as well, but that’s just my opinion..

Would you be alright with it then if armed police had guns and so did regular citizens? If a guy in a dumbass uniform and ridiculous hat taps you on the shoulder and whispers to you to not commit crime, is that really gonna deter you from committing said crime? NO!!! If a guy in full black, wearing body armour and carrying a rifle as well as a handgun and Taser in their belt comes up to you and orders you to not commit crime, I'd personally be much more deterred from committing said crime. You can call it oppression all you like, but I'd rather be oppressed and safe than free but dead. Another thing is that our officers can't just get rid of their firearms and expect criminals to do the same. But then again, we can't just overload the police force with firearms either, as it'll reduce approachability and increase the number of guns that gangs import, leading to more crime. We need to find a balance between AFOs and public trust, and currently that means bringing in more AFOs to the police force. Question: what direct impact does having armed police have on a regular law-abiding citizen?

Nobody will be thrown under a bus. Tony Long was prosecuted because the IPCC didn't get the footage of the Azelle Rodney incident. In the Jean Charles de Menezes and Anthony Grainger cases, the officers involved were not prosecuted.
