Hi Jeff, I'm just wondering if you need to sleeve the bolt holes that go through the square tube to be compliant. Its to prevent crushing the tube when you tighten down the bolts.

I was thinking the same thing, but I'm guessing it has to do with clearance underneath. He has great attention to detail, so I'm confident there's a solid reason why he did it the way he did.

Would be MUCH stronger. Adding material to to each side doesn't do all that much. It's all about having material away from axis of stress. Think of a piece of sheet metal. You can bend a piece of sheet metal with your hands even if it is a couple of feet wide.

To late now but I learned a LONG time agot to ALWAYS use new mounts at the start of an engine swap to fabricate mounts. Old ones seldom have the shape they started out with.
@Jonathan_Doe_
@Jonathan_Doe_ 3 жыл бұрын
Swings and roundabouts really, at least with the old mounts he’ll know that he’ll have clearance under the engine as new mounts wear and sag with age.. it’s just whether that’s enough clearance up top for the engine to go up 10-20mm if he does put new ones on now.

Looking good, Jeff! That is going to be a lovely strong subframe! I'm surprised though you didn't decide to stiffen up the mounting by replacing those OEM rubber mounts...? But hey, it's not my car, so you do what you want! Don't I remember you getting hold of a horizontal/vertical band saw? Wouldn't that have made better work of cutting that box section than the angle grinder? Oh, and buy two rolls of MIG wire when you go out - and then try to remember to keep one in stock! ;)

Loving this series, ... this and the Alfa. Thanks for sharing. Small suggestion: where you've bolted through the box section, I'd also weld in a compression tube (bolt hole tube) to prevent the square tube from "squishing" (technical term) when you torque up the bolts. Otherwise the bolts will not be able to be torqued up properly and may end up continuously working loose.

seems you've made the big-time, a LOT more ads than ever before, congrats! lol. Great build, love to see this coming together. I'm assuming you will gusset the corners of the sub-frame, it just seems there's gonna be a lot of torque, the more support the better. congrats on all the hard work!

Looks like you have thought long and hard about the way you want this to go. I am wondering about the sound, and the oil movement in the sump. a few have put V8 LS engines in 911's some have gone bang in a few short laps on the track, they wish they had just got the right engine. I know you did your research but have you asked or seen anyone having oil starvation. Only saying now so you can prevent any issues.

Many things to like about your cradle system- not the least of which it looks to be an easy job to drop the engine/trans combo fairly easily. No small good when even a belt change or spark plug change will be much eased by having the engine out of the car. You might want to set up a stand for it engine/trans and cradle where you could run it on the bench. I'm thinking a single plug wiring connection, AN fittings for the rad hoses and fuel lines- ten- fifteen minutes out and fifteen- twenty back in. This is turning out pretty bad a$$! Still think you should get Mrs. Jeff togged and helmeted and learning how to drive it! FR

@@HomeBuiltByJeff IDK- a simple, hard to tip stand and hoses to extend the rad lines, fuel lines and a jumper to plug in through? If you planned to work right under the car up on the lift, it wouldn't be a lot. But it's your car and your shop- that is the great thing about it! No comment on Mrs, Jeff driving a race car? FR

You're doing it wrong '-} I would connect the side bars under the front bar so that it gave more clearance to the pulleys and provides some Bash protection to the sump. BUT before all that I would have taken a serious look at what could be modified to raise the engine at least another inch. From what I could see of the cover plate area some hammering folding spacing and maybe a new chunk of aluminium sheet could gain you two or more inches
