How to Germinate Spinach Seeds for Hydroponics

Mom shows how to grow hydroponic spinach with tips and tricks she has learned over the years. Spinach can be hard to germinate, but she has figured out a great method and has a large crop every winter. After we work on spinach, we jump into the pig pen to give them more food.
Spinach germination tips and tricks
2 Styrofoam plates
paper towels
2 cup clean water
pitcher
2 teaspoons hydrogen peroxide
spinach seeds
Mix about water and hydrogen peroxide in pitcher. Lay 2 layers of paper towels on the plate. Sprinkle spinach seeds. Cover with 2 layers of towels and soak with solution. Cover with top plate. Germinate for 36 hours. Using tweezers, transfer sprouted seeds to growing cubes. Put in nursery and cover again until they start growing. Leave in nursery for about a week, then place in channels.

Just wanted to let you ladies know that mom's method with the peroxide is the "bomb." I have 1.5 yr old spinach seeds that I tried 7-8 times to germinate last year with different methods with nearly zero success. Saw your vid, pulled the seeds out of the fridge, and had 80% germination in 48 hrs. Peroxide and/or darkness was key. Thank you! Just moved them all to 1.5" rockwool ahead of a DWC home.

Yes of course! That is exactly how we were too. All of us love spinach, but it just wouldn't germinate. We threw away a lot of supplies trying to get it to work. This saves so much growing medium. Hope it works for you!

Lots of the plants we grow we put multiply seeds in the cubes. We have never thinned out the plants. We just are careful up front on what we planted so we don't have to work in the back-end thinning plants if that makes sense

There is a temperature control unit, I have 2 coming, that I will install with an old fridge and a crockpot filled with water to make a seed germination chamber. The crock inside the fridge will keep my seeds warm and moist for quick germination in winter. Also thinking about use as a hatchery. Sounds crazy, but I'll soon know. it would work with any seed that's hard to germinate When we grow fodder, we soak the seeds in a bleach solution overnight to get them to germinate.

Yes because the seeds have already started to sprout in the paper towels. We forgot to check on them once after a day, and they got very leggy fast. Now we know to keep a close eye.

I do soak it in nutrient water just because i can take it off the system really easy. I don't know PPM I use EC and its about 1.5 and ph is 5.8

Hi Devon! I'm trying to germinate the spinach seeds in the Oasis with a paper towel over top. It's taking awhile but I think I finally see the rhizome growing. Now I've started some on the plate with paper towels. I'm testing it out to see if it's quicker. My plants have been in the NFT for two days and I think the kale is already taller. That's a good experiment idea! That would save a step. We just have to the sections of spinach left. Interesting. Never seen the two paper plate method before. I put seeds between two sheets of paper towel, generously wet the towels, insert the towels flat into a large plastic bag, and leave in a warm spot. Within 2 days, the radicle is out, even a few mm long. As you say, it is best to transplant the seeds at this stage, because as the root grows it binds firmly with the paper and is harder to get off. The biggest variables to seed sprout success is the right moisture and right temperature....and possibly whether the seeds have been stored well. Seeds have to be kept moist, and temps of 65-85F speed up germination for winter crops, and 75-95F for summer crops. The high temp can be applied during the day, and the lower temp during the night.

What is the size of your Greenhouse? Is it 10,000 square feet?

Wow!! I’m anxious to give this a try!!! I’ve wasted a ton of seeds trying to get things to germinate but some end up having either a little bit of white fur or a black fur on top of the papertowel and I never knewif it’s okay to use any seeds that have germinated with that or not so I always err on the side of caution and toss them out and try again! I’m wondering if this hydrogen peroxide water would be good for all my seeds because I’m sure it would stop the fur growth? As for spinach seeds specifically I’ve tried repeatedly to germinate them and I’ve never once had any luck so I’m definitely trying this with my new spinach seeds for this year!! This is a well guarded secret because it’s the first time I’ve ever heard to sprout them like this! Thank you for sharing!! We may have some lovely fresh spinach in our menu plan in the distant future!! As for how you are planting your peppers in the bags of vermiculite, my only question is why? I’ve been growing peppers in nutrient rich water and nothing else for a very long time with terrific success! I just fill the 4 litre jug with nutrient rich water and stick the sprout in the top I don’t need anything to hold it up it just drapes over the top of the container and I wrap my containers in tin foil to prevent any nasty algae growth and the tin foil wrapped around the neck does two things it keeps any dust or debris from falling in the top and also sunlight from shining in and it also gives the little plant some support until it get big and strong to support itself, I leave them in this container until they put on their first round of peppers and then after that we move them into the next size of container because I’ve found the pepper plants will grow to the size of container that their roots will fill and another thing I’ve noticed is after they put on their first round of peppers and they are fully ripened on the vine when I harvest them after the last pepper is harvested the plant immediately enters a growth cycle putting on all kinds of new leaves and then it starts blooming all over again! I had thought there would be a period of dormancy but that hasn’t been the case with my peppers to date and they are filled with peppers getting ready to ripen and turn red very very soon! I’m just an indoor hobby farmer trying to reduce our food bill with growing our own veggies so that’s why I’m using a lot of DIY methods to grow as inexpensively as possible. So far so good, my best crops to date have been seeds from bakers creek heirloom seed company called lipstick peppers they are a small to medium size variety of sweet red pepper, they taste sooo sweeet they are like candy which makes me think 🤔 hhhmm red pepper jam ??!!! That would be delicious with these I bet! Anyway something else to try once we have more harvested then we know what to do with so far we just harvest them as we eat them and they are soooo good definitely the crown jewel on top of our salads! 🥰🙏🏻🇨🇦

Those lipstick peppers sound wonderful! I love pepper jam. There was a vendor at the farm market that sold some. But we grow out peppers in the grow bags because they are easy for us to care for and move around. We just stick the emitters in and they are good to go all season. The lipstick sweet peppers are sooo incredible I highly recommend. I love trying different varieties of sweet peppers, I’m trying a new kind called purple passion the interesting thing about these peppers when perfectly ripe are supposed to be purple on the outside but remain green on the inside. One other question I’ve learned that peppers will continue to grow after you have harvested the last pepper the plant will grow and begin to put on additional blossoms and continue to go through these growing seasons and harvests I’m just wondering if you have continued to grow your plants beyond the one season ? If so, what is the longest you’ve been able to maintain a plant and have it continue to produce abundance? It’s my understanding that aggressive pruning assists with these progressions, the more you prune the strong the plants stems become and are able to hold even more peppers. My lipstick plant is on its second harvest and as more then double the peppers then the previous harvest and the main stems are strong like green branches I’ve pruned very heavily so that all that is currently visible underneath are peppers with an umbrella of leaves above. 🙏🏻🥰🇨🇦 I would think if pepper plants can continue to grow like this and produce exceptional harvests it would be a growers dream and just pure profit? After this harvest on my lipstick plant which is currently in 40litres of water I’ll be upsizing it into a 100litre tote as I believe the plants/roots grow to fill the container that holds them and with each additional upgrade in size the peppers themselves each become larger, perhaps that’s just coincidence and that once they become their true size they won’t get any larger then they are supposed to be? I know I have a lot of unanswered questions contained in this but it’s part of the fun of all my experiments. With my experiments continuing in an effort to try to answer the questions and to truly put preconceived notions to the test. I think because I’m new to gardening I’m more apt to try things that others already believe to be impossible. For me I need to try it myself and not just take it as true.

I used a 1020 tray rather than a plate as you did, used the paper towels, soaked with water & peroxide solution, spread seeds, paper towel on top, more solution, then another 1020 tray for black out. tagged it and had staff uncover after 36 hours and nothing. do you suggest certain temp/environment? A bunch of times! They do so well when we keep them trimmed up. It all depends on the weather, but we've gotten 7 or 8 cuttings before they needed pulled or bolted.

Hi! Yes water flows 24 hours in the NFT channels where the spinach grows. When we get the Bato buckets going, I will make a video on them. Water only flows once an hour or so to those. In the grow bags with the perlite/vermiculite mixture, we water those once or twice a day.
